James Taylor: Making American Standard

  • It takes an extraordinary artist to re-imagine some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and make them completely their own. Unlike most who have tackled similar material, American Standard’s beautifully simple, stripped-down arrangements are based on the 2-guitar collaboration of James Taylor and John Pizzarelli, rather than standard piano arrangements. James was determined to keep that sound at the center of the project, and the effect is mesmerizing.
    Available here: found.ee/JTAmericanStandard
American Standard was primarily recorded at James's home studio, TheBarn in MA, with additional work done at United Recording and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Treasure Isle and Blackbird Studios in Nashville. An all-star array of Taylor’s musical comrades make significant contributions here including:
    - Steve Gadd, drums,
    - Luis Conte, percussion
    - Jimmy Johnson, bass
    - Viktor Krauss, upright bass
    - Larry Goldings, melodica/Hammond B3 Organ
    - Walt Fowler, trumpet/flugelhorn
    - Lou Marini, clarinet/sax
    - Stuart Duncan, violin
    - Jerry Douglas, dobro
    - Arnold McCuller, vocals
    - Kate Markowitz, vocals
    - Andrea Zonn, vocals
    - Dorian Holley, vocals
    - Caroline Taylor, vocals
    Track listing:
    1. My Blue Heaven (Walter Donaldson-George A. Whiting)
    2. Moon River (Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer)
    3. Teach Me Tonight (Gene De Paul-Sammy Cahn)
    4. As Easy As Rolling Off A Log (M.K. Jerome-Jack Scholl)
    5. Almost Like Being In Love (Frederick Loewe-Alan Jay Lerner)
    6. Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat (Frank Loesser)
    7. The Nearness Of You (Hoagy Carmichael-Ned Washington)
    8. You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught (Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein II)
    9. God Bless The Child (Billie Holiday-Arthur Herzog Jr.)
    10. Pennies From Heaven (Arthur Johnston-Johnny Burke)
    11. My Heart Stood Still (Richard Rodgers-Lorenz Hart)
    12. Ol’ Man River (Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II)
    13. It’s Only A Paper Moon (Harold Arlen-Yip Hardburg-Billy Rose)
    14. The Surrey With The Fringe On Top (Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein II)
Growing up in a musical family, James fell in love with the exquisite melodies, impeccable phrasing and concise storytelling of the early era songwriting masters absorbing the qualities that would become essential to his work in popular music a few years later. American Standard is a reminder of the things that make James Taylor so special, a supreme dedication to his craft and an abiding appreciation for the everlasting power of the American song.

Hi James! I'm a young man of the age of 14 and my father showed me your music a year ago. Now I have to listen to your songs everyday. I love your songs! I am happy that I have decided to learn guitar at the age of 5 so I can play some of your songs myself. :)

WOW i am 104 now and still listening to this astonishing artist. James taylors songs got me through 4 husbands. 15 children . 63 grand children and now 191 great grand kids . I loved i lost . I won . I experienced life . Mr taylor iv got some lyrics if you ever read this . Goes like this . Walking in a place of memories so many friends so many enemys. Born with no fear or ideologies people speaking love no false apologies . Its all real its all real its all real . Then the self righteous opinionated hate but on them reflecting mirrors speak out . Most times im sure they mean well but its really to hard to tell. Dont go damaging the innocent for names sake or try to make a thing you eat off more than a plate . Sure you can dress it up but your never change your fate . Well not with hate . Hide behind your material goods but when your time comes there just be fire and wood . And the masks that we wear they come tumbiling down . Material people in the illusion please for a second excuse my intrusion for once you have heard its a unremoveable pertrusion. Best see it now if you propose to make a change. Its a one way plane anyway. Thanks . Needs to be moved about and tweaked but really says more than just the words . Thanks

I liked this especially. "Dont go damaging the innocent for names sake or try to make a thing you eat off more than a plate . Sure you can dress it up but your never change your fate . Well not with hate" Maybe add a common law [C]Copyright notice for yourself there? Though being copied would be flattery, and getting your words out there.

I would never even dream of giving James Taylor a tip about playing guitar, but because how much I love his guitar playing I will give him a tip on making kindling. At 7:52 Never strike down toward your hand that is holding the wood. Use the “contact method“ and ensure your fretting hand stays healthy for years to come. I learned it in the scouts 50 years ago about the same time I bought my first album: One Man Dog (still have it ).

How is it possible that James' voice gets better, sweeter, with even more control year on year without aging? And, how is it that his playing becomes more proficient, never expected, but always familiar? Uncanny, unmatched, unequaled. TGFJ (Thank God For James).

Fantastic. These songs strike me too James. We listened to the same music as kids. Showtunes, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc, etc, etc but also big bands and real jazz. Thanks for giving these songs new life. The only thing missing was a Gershwin tune. About 10 years ago Brian Wilson did an album of Gershwin covers. The Gershwin estate apparently gave him access to a number of unfinished songs. So there are 2 songs on that recording that say words and music by George Gershwin and Brian Wilson. How cool is that? We need one more of those songs completed - words and music by George Gershwin and James Taylor. Thanks again.

JT‘s mother, Trudy, shared with me on the bus down from Boston how she would take first one of her children and then another, and then another, to see Broadway musicals during the time when the family was on the Vineyard and not in the Carolinas. “It seemed no one had any money in those days, and I simply couldn’t afford taking all the children at once. It was a very serious thing for Kate, Alex, Livingston, James, and Huey, a real treat and the highlight of the year. And when I asked her if, during those times, she had any idea that her children, especially James and Livingston, would grow up to be such fantastic and influential musicians themselves, there was a twinkle in Mother Trudi’s eye as she gently smiled and said “oh yes, indeed there was, most certainly!”
So when James talks about the great American songbook, about Broadway, and the roots and fundamentals of the classic American sound, we can imagine a young boy, with his pea coat secured against the New York City winter, helping his mother up the steps and into the darkened sanctuary to be swept away into the magical world of song. And I wonder too, if JT had any sense at that one day, he too would be considered one of the great American songwriters?

I am a singer songwriter and started playing his songs in the late sixties. In 1975, after Croce died; in 1975; the Gorilla album came out and I predicted JT WOULD do a standards album. And sure enough...American Standard came out last year! Great album.

JT's been a inspiration to my guitar playing for years. I haven't bought one of his albums in quite a while, but I think I may grab this one if only for "Teach Me Tonight".

Working with John Pizzarelli -- the best.

He was probably channeling his father - Bucky Pizzarelli who is 94 and joined the Vaughn Monroe dance band in 1944 when he was just 17. Bucky also did some tours with Benny Goodman. He is really an OG (as the kids say) guitar player.

A popular singer, iconic of 70s music, appreciates these old standards of American popular music, is amazing, and his versions of them are just outstanding! Just love it! I bet he’ll start a trend among Western singers. I guess he grew up on these songs and loved them, just as I did😘🤗

Glad JT, my favorite in the 70s, continues to sing and record. Really happy he’s doing this, singing some of the best American show tunes and standards I grew up on. And my goodness, the guitar and his still very heartwarming, mellow voice-can’t wait to get my copy of this. When will it be released?😘🤗

Very Nice James...I'm looking forward to it's release. I have a similar relationship with the song....."I like to sing-a about the moon-a and the jun-a and the spring-a".....

"...about a sky of blue-a and a tea for two-a, I love-a to, I love-a to sing." HA! thought I was the only one. First thing I thought of when I saw that clip. That and the Bing Crosby / Fred Astare crooning roosters. Great memories! :)

Brillian! I too was raised on these. My dad had a voice like Sinatra. He just loved to sing. I hated it. Now I wish I could hear him just one more time. I will own this. Thanks James.
