Thanks for watching. In my review I use the word "sensitive" a couple of times. I am not using it as a pejorative in this sense.
I understand ya - awesome mind dude. I love your breakdowns at the end. Best on the net. Keep doing these.
One of my all time favorite movies! Saw it for the first time when I was 10 years old. ''Nurse Ratched'' is one of the greatest villains in movie history! Have you btw noticed her hairstyle? It's got two horns!!
Can I recommend another Jack Nicholson movie? Watch 'The Last Detail' (1973), another one of my all time favoriter movies!
you have to... have to...... have to.............. read the book. I don't want to spoil it, but it so not what you would expect after watching the Movie! The movie is a masterpiece, and the book is a masterpiece but trust me , watching the movie will not spoil the book.
3 years later, Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd would be in one of the most successful comedy series the country ever saw with "Taxi".
Nurse Ratched has long since been considered one of the top film villains of all time. She certainly is of a nasty sort.
This movie is legendary
Chief was played by the incredible and very underrated (as most Native actors are) Will Sampson. This movie was his "big break" movie. He walked on in 1987.
An interesting thing is this was based on a book by Ken Kesey. And in the book, it is told from Chief's point of view, we hear his thoughts from the beginning, so he is actually the main character in the book, very perceptive on your part.
It's like Red in Shawshank redemption. He is the narrator and main character in the original story
People took notice of Nicholson in Easy Rider, but Bob Rafelson’s Five Easy Pieces was his critically acclaimed breakout role. The two of them would do a number of pictures together
Much love for Five Easy Pieces. Robert Eroica Dupea was a great character
The book is read from Chiefs point of view. The movie changed the way behavior medicine was being practiced. The Lobotomy went our, the use of electroconvulsive therapy was decreased drastically and asylums were replaced with group homes. Many say these changes started with public awareness which was influenced by this movie. The name nurse Ratchet now means an evil or at least non-empathetic nurse.
The other doctors realized he was playing the system and wanted to take McMurphy out, I think Nurse Ratcted was power hungry and wanted to break him. Great choice, love this movie. I believe it won some awards. I think it was also a book, maybe a play. Really enjoyed your reaction.
You said he's just treating them regular, that's because he wants them to be treated like humans with choices. ♥️
Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman a classic! You won't be disappointed
The book of the same name, by Ken Kesey, was written from Chief's perspective, so your analysis in that regards is spot-on.
The film that "made" Jack Nicholson was Easy Rider.
Thanks. I have to watch that.
I'd say Five Easy Pieces was the one that really put him on the map.
@@Serai3 yes 😊
the acting in this movie, all the actors.. out of this world!
Good observation that the movie is really about Chief. He was the narrator of the book, and in the beginning he is clearly schizophrenic, with florid hallucinations and an inability to correctly percieve reality. As McMurphy runs his scam (you're right he went in to try and beat the rap on his jail sentence) and begins to actually form an attachment with the inmates, Chief begins to better perceive everything, still with delusions and hallucinations to be sure, but he is definitely more clear. Something in McMurphy reached him and helped him. This movie is one of THE best adaptations of a book to film.
One flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo's nest 👍
What a great reaction and you can understand the whole low down. Great reaction
5 years later Jackie takes it to 110% Nicholson mode in The Shining.
Also stars Scatman Crothers (Hong Kong Phoey, Chico And The Man etc)
Shining
Will Sampson was actor who played the chief. Such a massive impact for so few words. Thanks for a great reaction to a film that I return to every few years - I get different things from it every time. Makes me cry most every time. Just awesome.
This might be the finest movie ever made. I’m actually thankful that I didn’t watch it until maybe 10 years ago so I could truly appreciate how great it really is.
You need to watch Chinatown, that was the beginning of Jack's leading man (he did do The Last Detail the year before and of course Easy Rider, but Chinatown launched him big time)
Best Picture winner for 1975.
This thing WON all 5 of the big Oscars.
It's an excellent play and then made into an exceptional movie. I wish more people would watch these classics because it'll them a better frame of reference for when they see bits and pieces of these classics being parodied. Keep it coming. I enjoy watching people reacting and genuinely appreciating the movie and its level of sophistication.
Mac and Ratched both gave them something they needed. Therapy. Just in different ways. She was having them talk about their issues. Mac was giving them a fresh taste of life.
Definitely a top 5 film.
Man you are covering some cool movies
For me it’s that final shot of the Native American running free to nature. Highly symbolic
11:30 Chief walking with that swagger lmaoo
I was a close personal friend of Will Sampson...(Chief)...an award winning artist who had never acted befire until this film. He went on to act in over 25 made for TV and big screen films such as playing "Crazy Horse" in The White Buffalo, the iconic "Ten Bears" in The Outlaw Josey Wales, and "Taylor" in Poltergeist 11...just to name a few. He told me that in between filming scenes Jack Nicholson would tell jokes and kid around to keep everyone laughing and lift their spirits to counteract the movie's dark subject matter. The mivie was filmed in a real Washington State Mental Hospital and Dr Spivey was a real dictor there who Jack gave acting pointers to in their interview scene that was completely improvised. Big secret..although Will was 6'5" the director put lifts in his shoes to make him even taller! The charactor Mac escaped with Chief since his spirit was freed from his body to be the one who "FLEW OVER" the Cuckoo's Nest while Chief escaped through the window. Thanks for your great review if this awesome film.
First time watching you. Love your insight. Excited to see more from you.
You won my subscription with this one. Great reaction to one of the best films ever -
This movie ended me......I have it on DVD, still have not watched it again, It hurt to bad.
Own it and love it. Great flick
Chief played by Will Sampson is a Muscogee native from Oklahoma. Google condescendingly list him as a painter rather than an actor. He's been in The Outlaw Josey Wales; Poltergeist 2; White Buffalo; FishHawk; Orca and this film. Sampson was also a painter and rodeo rider.
I like your take, mirrors my own. Ratched isn't necessarily a villain...she and McMurphy are incredibly flawed individuals who both mean well but are unaware of the true consequences of their actions. The residents at the facility are pretty much victims of McMurphy and Ratched's collision...
Are you kidding? She's pure evil and one of the all-time villains. McMurphy was the only one helping anyone. He breathed therapeutic life into everyone while she tried to drain it out of them.
Your analysis and perspective are excellent as all your reactions are thanks for sharing
Ever notice notice Billy didn't have a stutter for a brief moment after he got laid. Then nurse ratchet mentions his mom again and the stutter comes back instantly.
"Easy Rider" ('69) was Nicholson's breakout role...He worked in a slew of movies starting way back in '58, before ER made him famous.
You comment on the story being about the Chief is correct- in the novel the Cheif is the narrator.
My take is McMurphy gave the patients the courage to stand up for themselves- the human spirit.
Fantastic reaction, I just came across it. I see you mostly do TV shows, but I hope you hit some classics like this one from time to time. I'm subscribing just in hope!
The movie world got their first taste of Jack being Jack in 1960, Movie name Little Shop of Horrors. Jack was just starting and had a bit part but that bit part is the best thing about the movie. Movie was remade with other stars but I'm talking about the original.
Next movie with Jack being Jack is called Easy Rider (late 60s), which would be a good movie for you to react to. Jack is a supporting actor here but his role is priceless.
Jack played in other good movies before Cuckoo Nest, like 5 easy pieces and Carnal Knowledge, but he plays somewhat more conventional characters.
Next great Nicholson movie is this one Cuckoos Nest. Another classic with Jack being Jack is The Shining (I'd recommend a reaction to this movie too).
I'll mention another old movie called Chinatown. Jack plays a conventional character but the movie itself is top shelf.
Cuckoo's Nest is about the individual vs the institution. nurse ratched represents the institution. the institution has an interest in keeping the patience dysfunctional, pacified, and controlled. mcmurphy represents the individual, and he deals with each patient as an individual, to the point where they actually start to become more functional, less pacified and uncontrollable.
if you liked the movie, you should definitely read the novel. even if you're not a big reader, it's well worth the read.
Five Easy Pieces and The Last Detail came before this and Jack is amazing in both. Pretty sure you'd dig them.
I’ve always questioned whether Chief was just on the autistic spectrum and not mentally ill, or just faking it entirely.
Nurse Rached is near the top of the all time scariest villains, because Nurse Rached's existed in real life all over the mental health industy. Nurse Rached's are why mental facilities were closed 40 years ago and our mentally ill are drugged up and let loose to live on our streets. Not housed and treated.
That is the most insultingly simplistic reading of the collapse of the mental health system in this country.
Classic film!
Jack was in Easy Rider. His character in that was a little nuts too. That came out in 1969 I think.
Chinatown was 1974, and he was great in that too...Jack's the man...
Great book , great movie , great play .
Have you ever watched 12 Angry Men? There are 2 versions. The movie is a film that takes place in 1 room and is about the characters. If you haven't seen it, I would suggest that you would like it.
Dang I HAVE seen your reaction to this. Must’ve been one of the first reactions I saw you do before knowing about as much. Was just looking for any reactions to this movie I guess.
Jack Nicholson's first break out role was Five Easy Pieces (1970).
Great reaction to a great movie starring multiple great actors- a Trifecta of Terrific!!! Jack's also excellent in the drama movie "As Good As It Gets".
This film is on my top 10 list.
This movie is based on a novel that everyone thought impossible to film. The story is told from the viewpoint of the Chief, who narrates the story from his position as The Guy No One Notices. But the Chief is schizophrenic, given to rather bizarre illusions, so he's not a reliable narrator. We can never be sure what is true in his story and what isn't, which plays to the theme of mental illness very effectively. (This is one of the problem with filming a book - the movie solidifies the story so the unmoored surreal feeling of the book is gone.)
@@oliviarogers3559 Why would you? The movie is told from _McMurphy's_ perspective, not the Chief's - and while he may be something of an asshole, we know that McMurphy is perfectly sane. So why would anything in the film be unreliable?
@@oliviarogers3559 "anything in this film" Maybe check before you post, then.
Some psych wards are still like this.
@ 3:10 LOL!! Oh man, it's funny how we all think alike sometimes! I've said and heard the same phrase "Jacknicholsonesque" a few times! Have you seen Easy Rider? Think that could be when the phrase started.
This is like top 5 for me. Chinatown is another great Nicholson film that nobody reacts to. Good stuff bro.
Love this channel man
loved the review.
You should check "Chinatown". Great Reaction btw
As for Nurse Ratchet. She knew how to push those guys buttons and she enjoyed it. They kept Mac there because Nurse Ratchet wanted to keep him there, she said so in the meeting. It was like, she saw that he was someone who she was having trouble pushing his buttons, and she wanted to break him down, as Chief said. You said you didn't see anything Nurse Ratchet did that was that bad. I don't know how you can't see how she is mentally and emotionally dominating them in just about every scene. Mental and emotional abuse is worse then physical abuse, because the scares aren't evident but are much more long lasting.
Nurse Ratchet is PURE EVIL.
All the actors did an excellent job on this movie but Jack Nicholson was superb !!!
Academy award
@@TCM215 Don't remember but didn't Louise Fletcher win one as well ?
@@cesarnarro6013 Oscar winner for best film, director, actor, actress, written and Brad Dourif (Billy Bibbitt) was nominated to support actor.
A quick note, mental patients arent only those that are a danger. Theres people that just cant take care of themselves. Like the guy in the chair drooling into his lap. With no one to take care of them its either the streets (where they would last until they starved) or in a hospital. Just because someone isnt a danger doesnt mean they should be living on the outside. That said, for a more depressing movie, Watch Girl, Interrupted from the 90s. Its about a girls mental ward. Very good w/ a young angelina jolie and a host of other star actresses doing a wonderful job.
I think the movie was making the point that a lot of people could make it in society but mental hospitals like this halt their progress and make them feel like they aren’t capable of anything.
Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces were good to great movies, but Chinatown (1974) was a masterpiece. Think L.A. Confidential 25 years before it came out but better. I think this movie won all 5 major awards. Only three movies did that.
Great job man.
But They told McMurphy HE was being evaluated too.
Definitely do a react video, or at at least watch "Easy Rider" (1969) to see Jack Nicholson doing a roll he's well remembered for. He was around way before that though.
I remember that medication bs at school. So annoying.
Please give The Expanse a look-see.
It's the best scifi on right now.
I live in Florida and always heard stories of this being filmed in the state mental hospital. I’m scared to watch but I want to see this before checking out the Ratchet series on Netflix.
It was filmed in Oregon
@@fudhater8592 Thanjs for the info, I did a little research and Chattahoochee is the name of a movie that was filmed in Chattahoochee, Florida that called out for being so similar to One Flew Over..
I never understood why women thought do the right thing was such a great movie. Mookie never took care of his kid. Such as, he didn't buy groceries, diapers, formula and didn't spend any time with his son. The only interaction Mookie had with his son is when he goes over to his sons grandmother's house trying to get a little loving from his son's mother and the grandmother and his son are in another room. WTF...and this is a great movie?
The book told the story from the chiefs point of few
Lots of great actors
Five Easy Pieces he was in before this one and another excellent performance by all.
I think Nurse Ratchet wasn’t the villain she’s portrayed to be. I think more she was the ambassador of how crap the system was in the days the book/movie was based. Of course with hindsight and Billy, she never looked worse with the threat of telling his mom about him losing his virginity. I think the whole system was fucked and she was the face to us viewers.
The book is all from the Chiefs perspective
Dude. I feel like you missed the whole point. The asylum is a representative of a society ruled by an iron fist and strict status quo. McMurphy is an outside force trying to show ypu that the system is fucked. And he is beaten down and crushed for that.
New fan, easily subbed -Can I recommend the reviewing of a Sci-Fi Film "Children of Men" or "Snow Piercer"
Another actor who’d become very successful Brad Dourif playing Billy
A 25 year old Brad Dourif
Yes, he’s terrific as Grima Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Yep, the voice of Chucky. You wouldn't expect the studdering kid to become Chucky.
Great choice. The writing, supporting cast, Jack, character development. Brilliant. In a larger sense, is the film a reaction to the rise of feminism?
The book on which this movie was based on was more a reflection on the authoritarianism of the U.S. government and their attempts to suppress the freedom of the people, mixed with Ken Kesey's own experiences of working within the mental health institution and his experimentation with drugs like LSD. To this, director Milos Forman further added his own subtext of him growing up in Communist Czechoslovakia and the control they exercised to monitor their citizens, fitting it more together with other anti-establishment films that began growing in popularity in the mid-1960s. That's what the film is mainly going for, though a feminist theme is also something that certainly can be read into its general politics, if perhaps not as a major overall idea over the corruption inherent in the system itself.
Serious question, why was your school the ones responsibly for handing out ADHD meds? Isnt that something that should be done, idk, by the parents?
I was wondering that too.
How the hell can you watch a film like this and keep stopping it to yap.?
You can watch a ton of great movies from 1973-1998.
100%
Hate to break it to you but soft peter was real. Now illegal
I'm tired and it's a lot of baloney
Another fantastic movie!! Check out Girl Interrupted!!
This was a great breakdown and I feel like you really got the whole movie. Loved this.
Dud me and another kid in 3rd grade used to race to get our Ritalin from the school nurse and then I would be all speed-ed out the rest of the day. I didn’t have adhd, I had a depression disorder but in the 90’s they were handing out adhd meds like Halloween candy.
