I personally think that my generation loves the 80s and 70s because most of our parents grew up then. That means that most of their interests would run off on us. I personally love the 80s because it gives me a weird type of nostalgia even though I wasn’t alive then

The '80s only ran off to you guys because it was good
There's a reason that my parents music isn't going on today
nobody wants to hear the Bee gees or I want to hold your hand. The late seventies in the 80s were the Pinnacle of music

@@privateprivate1865 In the 90's pop/dance music there was a huge revival of 70's disco/funk music fueled by nostalgia . 90's rock kids loved Pink Floyd and The Doors - There were painted murals of Jim Morrison EVERYWHERE. In the 90's it was absurd to be nostalgic for the 80's which was considered an embarrassing cringe-inducing abomination and everything from the gated snare sounds to the cheesy optimistic family sitcoms needed to be erased from popular culture history and denied that it ever happened.

@@waz3128 , not true. Lots of people were nostalgic for the 80s when I was growing up in the 90s. Speak for yourself.

      Nope I’m not fuck the 80s 💯
Unfortunately I’m an OG Gen Z person (worst generation fuck Gen Z). BUT I’m glad I got to experience the best years in music 2003-2018 best 15 years.
I don’t understand why people are so obsessed and enamored with the goddamn 80s.

Wow, this video is severely underrated. Seriously, man, this is genuinely well put together, with relevant references. Shit, I'm guttered this has so little views. I wish you the best with your channel, cause you're making quality content.

You keep asking where the '90s nostalgia is, but if you just look around (especially on the internet), it's everywhere! I can't turn my head without seeing a '90s reference, but I also see just as many '80s references. Even the '70s hasn't seemed to fully lost its nostalgic properties yet.

I think the reason people are not as nostalgic to the 90s as people are for the 80s is because the 90s were a rehash of the 70s. 80s, however, was more unique in its upbeat music, colorful fashion, fantastic movies, and overall pop culture. The 90s were more anti everything, including the upbeat vibe of the 80s, therefore making the 90s somewhat nihilistic. I dont have much nostalgia for the 90s as much as I do for the 80s because of the 90s depressing tone.

I saw nothing but 90s nostalgia crap like 7 or so years ago (just me personally though). The issue was that they got a lot of the stuff confused with the 80s. It was more of a 80s/90s nostalgia phase. I feel like that's all died out, though, and it's gone completely to 80s nostalgia, you're definitely right about that.

I was born in 1987. I thought I loved the 80’s because I felt some nostalgia for my baby times. But maybe not!
It’s interesting to know that even people not even alive back then feel a strange nostalgic feeling for it. 😮
I myself have a theory. The 80’s were magical. Most of the. Pop culture icons we have today have roots in the 1980’s or late 70’s and early 90’s.
The 90’s were kind of ‘dead’ in comparison to the 80’s. For example: as a kid, there weren’t many cool heroes in movies and TV shows. The 80’s were so vibrant. Whereas the 90’s were just the left over of all that was magical about it.
I guess the new magical decade is the 2010’s. Where we saw the birth of social media, Marvel heroes, the smartphone boom, and TH-cam.

Man I just hope someday society evolves to the 80's instead of getting worse. I mean my dad was born in 78 and I love to hear all the stories he lived, all his friends that are all in the 40s and some in the 50s already and man I feel sad that the stories that I'll tell my son will be that everyone was paying more attention on computers instead of living, myself included, it's a problem of the 2000's kids that has gotten worse with the time, my Lil brother refuses to go out even with 10 years to play because he says that he has people waiting to play fortnite with him... It's so sad

Great Essay! I've always been a fan of the 80's aesthetic so you'll hear no complaints from me.
I will say that 90's nostalgia is definitely not absent. Toonami was recently brought back to air and Hey Arnold is about to get a film. Also, I think the big Comic Book movie craze is directly inspired by the comic book boom that took place in the early 90's leading up to the development of Image Comics. There's also a ton of 70's inspiration lingering as well with Bruno Mars and the film the Nice Guys. I think this is all probably due to your point that the internet has changed the amount of content we can consume and we don't need to feel limited to one particular decade. A great example is LA LA Land, drawing its nostalgia from classic musicals from the 40's - 50's.
Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see your next essay.

      Thank you Kevin :)
I agree that the 90's nostalgia is not absent, in fact since putting this video up I appear to be seeing 90's influenced culture everywhere! I'm also a huge fan of the 80's, but I do love how artists are finding inspirations from all decades these days to bring us films such as LA LA Land. I feel that we are getting a broader range of influences now and it is absolutely great.
Thanks again for the kind words, it really helps out, encourages me, and it's great to know that people may be taking something away from this.
My next video should be up in just a few hours, it is about censorship in art, looking at how classification boards can push artists to change their work from their original visions as well as other issues around censorship. I am looking forward to the response to that video as I find the topic can be quite polarizing and I always love to hear different views on a topic.

I’ve seen a lot of people note our current obsession with all things 80s and whilst it’s definitely an interesting phenomena, I’m not completely sure it’s a good thing. It feels like part of a larger trend where we just don’t seem to experience modernity through popular culture anymore and what’s more is that no one seems to mind. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s completely fine but there’s something that just doesn’t sit right with me 🤷🏾‍♀️

The 80's just had more good stuff than the 90's, so people look back on it more fondly, and there's more material to mine for nostalgic purposes. After the 90's culture really fell off a cliff.

But we are seeing a hodgepodge of 80s, 90s, and even Y2K nostalgia. All at the same time. It's like a general yearning for time periods a lot of us didn't live in. Now just seems so scary and unsatisfying.

    • @mauve9266
      @mauve9266 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes but no. I think our current conceptualisation of the 80s is very idk romanticised. I don’t think how we see the 80s now is how it actually was. u can’t really compare your current reality to a hyper idealised hyper romanticised version of the past. Tho stuff like stranger things I’m sure does accurately capture some of the 80s I don’t think most people were cognisant of the aesthetics/themes that we see today. And then with the Internet u have all these people contributing to the mythos of the 80s and to said themes/aesthetics that I rlly find it hard to believe were universal at the time. In like 30 years people with have come up with a flawed conceptualisation of the 2020s and we may very well think “uh that’s not what it was like” but it won’t matter. As time passes it makes sense that we forget a lot of the bad things about the 80s e.g. fears of a Cold War, the prevalence neoliberal economic systems, the homophobia, racism, AIDS epidemic (excuse my more western focus it’s just what Ik the most) etc. Etc. what a lot of ppl who didn’t grow up in the 80s seem to have nostalgia for is this newer version of the 80s we’ve curated but I don’t think it’s right to disregard all the other things that come with merely being alive at any given time like we can’t just measure everything about our reality vs 80s music and fashion. Wow I didn’t realise I had so much to say about this 😂 my point is every era has it’s good and it’s bad. It’s like when people say they want to go back to the 60s and I’m like eh I rather keep my wifi and my civil rights but Ok 😂 so am I nostalgic for the 80s uhh no but I’ll take the John Hughes movies wherever I go

Yeah lmao. Ye had to show those 80s artists how it’s ACTUALLY fucking done. How to properly use a TR-808s (which NO ONE in the 80s used) and the synthesizer.
Oh and a MPC too (which again NO ONE in the 80s used 🤡)
There’s a reason he’s the greatest artist of all time.
Edit: Plus Ye sampled/samples *A LOT* of 70s music…he hardly sampled the 80s…it’s almost like the 80s were trash or something.
