The battle for the Amazon's future - BBC News

  • One of the world’s greatest defences against climate change - the Amazon rainforest - is under growing attack from deforestation.
But many of those working and making a living in it - including those cutting down its trees - say they depend on the forest and its resources for their own survival.
On Tuesday at the COP26 climate summit, more than 100 countries, covering about 85% of the world's rainforests, are due to sign a pledge promising to stop deforestation by 2030.
Brazil is among the signatories, although President Jair Bolsonaro is not attending the summit and deforestation has surged under his leadership.
BBC international correspondent Orla Guerin visited Brazil’s Rondônia state and met four people with differing views: a logger, an environmental policeman, a cattle rancher and an environmental activist.

Ironic then, since we roll over and give all our powers and rights away to the same oppressors for fear over a minor lung disease which they allowed to become a pandemic. We will all be starving and running like rats by 2050 at this rate, conservatively speaking. The time line is greatly speeding up as feedback loops are coming into effect while human pollution and exploitation is only increasing.~2021

That's a very narrow view on what is going on. Climate change isn't killing the planet; it's altering the environment in a way that is less hospitable to the current distribution of animals and plant life, and human settlement. Tress actually favour a warmer environment that is rich in CO2, so if climate change ends human civilisation trees will repopulate the earth in the most favourable regions. Few species stand the test of time including the the ancestors of humans, so it's unlikely that humans as we exist now will do so in the far future.

They don't care about deforestation as long as they make a living. It's dumb of the BBC to put this on people who are working for survival.
Coming from a developed country- the BBC should be asking how investors, funds, and corps look at deforestation along with the profit it gives them-
because people wouldn't be clearing the Amazon if it didn't make profit.

the big deal is that a very small part of everything that is taken from the forest stays in Brazil. Most things go to rich countries that criticize people who depend on it for a living but don't they act against the big companies of their own countries that have a part in the destruction of Amazon rainforest. Just to mention, the Norwegian mining company Hydro dumped toxic mining waste into the sources of Amazon rivers. For Norway the richness of the land, for the natives, contaminated water, and I am sure that no one in rich countries marched against this company, because deep down nobody really cares about the truth. ( And just to clarify, I'm not taking out the blame of this shit government that does nothing to protect and preserve the greatest treasure that Brazil has).

What is the number of pieces of furniture that are produced every day? What is the number of houses that are built of wood? What is the number of paper and all paper products? How many of these trees go to the needs of the developed world? Just thinking about how many consumers and what kind of waste of wood there is in England alone, I can imagine the quantity in all of Europe. And what is it all over the world? The hypocrisy of forest protection is just propaganda. People will continue to use wood indiscriminately and irresponsibly because of millions of years of habits. I am skeptical about forest conservation worldwide! Rich countries protect their forests but import wood from poor countries!

Trees are renewable, the rain forest barely absorbs any of the world's carbon emissions since it's nowhere near the majority of them, and the overwhelming majority of the oxygen in the world is made by phytoplankton in the ocean. Does it suck to push wildlife and people out of where they've lived for their whole lives? Yes, which is why we should definitely have some nature preserves that remain untouched. But as long as people want timber, they're going to take it from places where there is ample timber. A few generations later, the first plots cut down will be indistinguishable from what came before it and the process will start again. Saving the trees is a battle, not the war, and it's a battle that can be put on the back burner because again, trees are renewable.

But it doesnt surprise me that u suggested this, considering that the USA sanctioned Venezuela and Cuba, destroying their economy and making millions starve to death.

The Amazon forest locates in Brazil but belongs to the earth. The whole of humankind must protect the Amazon forest, not only Brazilians solely. The forest occupies a large piece of Brazil's territory and the Brazilians have to fight with the forest for the land. That's the conflict between the Brazilian and the Amazon forest, which is also the key to solving the refractory problem of deforestation. As far as I'm concerned, on the one hand, other nations should implement or increase tariffs on beef and timber in Brazil to discourage the activity of farming and logging in the forest area. On the other hand, people outside of Brazil should compensate Brazilians for their sacrifice of forest protection.
