    Hassan admitting that there are SOME circumstances where it’s acceptable, and then later suggesting that most of the time it would not be ok, is not contradictory and detrimental like destiny seemed to think it was. Admitting there are some acceptable circumstances, like destiny agrees with, also implies there are circumstances where it’s not ok, and Hassan was obviously trying to communicate that in most conceivable circumstances it would not ok. And just cuz he couldnt communicate that like a philosophy debate robot doesn’t mean destiny has the high ground here.

    Just my opinion, but I feel that in the beginning of the debate, Destiny is really not discussing in good faith.
    He keeps derailing what Hasan is saying to bring the discussion back to loaded questions he has carefully chosen to prove the point he'd like to make. This leaves Hasan with two equally undesirable options. Hasan could give a simple direct answer, but that allows Destiny to steer the direction of the conversation. His other option is to expand on his response a bit, but if he does this, Destiny will cut him off part way through and repeat the question, making Hasan look unfocused or unprepared.
    It's kind of like the only way Destiny is willing to have this conversation is by using the Socratic method, which is great at derailing someone's argument, but not necessarily good for finding a mutual understanding.

    • @dennispraegman3144
      @dennispraegman3144 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I understand that it might look like a "gotcha" given that Hasan's answer was obviously "no, but if you're going to do it don't admit to it". But you have to realise that in past conversations Hasan has held different, contradictory, positions to the one he gave in this video. Which is why Destiny is trying really hard to press Hasan for a yes.
      The root of the issue stems from the fact that Hasan never actually thinks about most of his positions before he takes a stance. He tries to think of something that is consistent to say on the spot. Which inevitably leads to something like this, where someone interprets his laziness (and stupidity if you will) as him being dishonest.
      So when Destiny asks for a yes or no, and Destiny perceives Hasan as being dishonest for denying previous position, he interprets Hasan's genuine attempt at answering his question as a continuance of the dishonesty.

    Yeah, uh, Destiny, he answered your question, just not the way you wanted him to. He qualified his "no" with instances in which it would apply but you didn't like that. You wanted him to say no without qualification, which surprises me, given how good you usually are at nuanced discussion. If someone asks you "Is it okay to kill someone," you would not say "no" because if someone is hurting someone you love in front of you, if you have to, you will do so in self-defense. If you answered that, the other person would be wrong to accuse you of dodging the question due to equivocation, since there are instances when it would be justified, and thus you wouldn't be able to commit to a simple yes or no answer, the way you want this guy to commit to. It is either disingenuous or (which I highly doubt) uncharacteristically obtuse on your part to demand that he does. I suspect it's the former because before he provided his nuanced answer to your question you prefaced your listening to it with "Okay, but I'm just going to ask you the same answer after you finish," which you did, in order to save face and follow through on asking the same question again. I've been listening to your debates for some time now and you really dropped the ball on this one.

    • @nateriver4951
      @nateriver4951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a false equivalence. The question Destiny asked was already nuanced enough and only required a straightforward response.
      Unlike your example of "Is it okay to kill someone?" Destiny asked "Is there any context where killing someone is okay?" This phrasing of the question accounts for self-defense or hurting someone you love.
      Hasan agrees that there are instances where it is okay, but then follows it up by clarifying that it isn't okay. The reason for the shit-show is Hasan trying to hold contradictory positions. I'll use your example.
      D: "Is there any context where killing someone would be okay such as self defense? "
      H: "Yeah I can agree that killing someone in self-defense would be okay"
      D: "So we agree?"
      H: "Killing people isn't an okay thing to do because it takes someone's life away from them."
      D: "You JUST said that it's okay in the context of self-defense. So is it okay in the context of self-defense or not?"
      H: "I wouldn't kill anyone in self-defense because I don't think it's okay."
      Rinse and repeat.

      Not really. These two were arguing entirely different points. Asking yes or no questions in an honest way is only ever useful if it would clear up a point that you otherwise understand. If it is the basis for the entire point than it provides nothing because it lacks any explanation. Dishonestly its just a "gotcha" to try to make someone seem to say someonething they dont mean. Do you love black people? No then youre racist. If you said yes than you have to agree with whatever JLP says or else you lied before. Hasans point was that admiting you say the n word makes you look bad, even if its actually ok to say it. Destiny claims he was just talking about jokes, which hasan never had a problem with it was publicly defending saying it that was his problem. You dont have to agree with that, but that is what the debate shouldve been about and Destiny called that pivoting and running away, that is either dishonest or he just did not understand at all. Destiny just wanted to get hasan to admit he says it or that its ok to say it so he looks bad, and then hangs up on him. That is not honest.

      I dont think making a clear cut statement is very hard at all. But lets pretend that it is.
      The HONEST way to react to Destiny's question would be to think about it for a moment, and then when you realize that you aren't sure how to make a clear prescription, to ADMIT THAT.
      For example "Hmm, I'm actually not sure. I know there are acceptable ways and unacceptable ways to use the N-word in private, but I'm not sure how to clearly differentiate them".
      The DISHONEST way to react, is to pivot from point to point to point and give random examples that don't answer the question.
      In truth, Hasan was just terrified of giving the wrong answer. That's it.
      Hasan is NEVER interested in giving HIS opinion on a controversial issue, he is SOLELY focused on giving the RIGHT answer. (the answer that will cause the least amount of blowback for him in his lefty/progressive/tanky communities.
      And if he doesnt know the right answer, he will dance and dance until the questioner gives up.
      You can view almost ANY Hasan conversation through this lens, and will explain 95% of his dialogue.
