I love the way you explain a play, then do it, THEN show it slow motion so we can understand it better! This is VERY helpful. Thank you for the great teaching videos you make.
I've been hitting all the PB shot and stroke highlights on TH-cam this week, and _this_ is the single most underrated shot in my opinion. I finally understand why my random rec group rarely manages to get into a kitchen game. Almost every shot from low in transition sets up another slam from the other side and we ended up bashing more than half the time (the other 30% was late-to-the-ball lob defense, and only 20% was kitchen game). I'm pretty new to the sport, and I was below average in the group (proficient enough for rec play, but not world beaters). I seemed to be working harder than anyone else I observed to land a solid 3rd-shot drop, although my batting average is only about 0.500 at this stage. And it was great when it worked. Suddenly the hulk on the other side with the Flash Gordon wrist action was reduced to sending me back a ball I could properly deal with. Not only is this shot underrated, but his is a superior treatment and extremely easy to understand.
Awesome Jordan! This is something I continually work on...sometimes successful, sometimes not. The problem I have is when playing with bangers or hard-hitters, resetting/volleying a fast ball from mid-court is really challenging! Just the right amount of grip pressure, etc. is needed and it's not always easy to tell how much to use to make a successful shot. My other problem is I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I want to make the "perfect" reset which oftentimes puts so much pressure on me, I totally flub the shot. Thoughts? Other than counseling... LOL
Yes Leslie, this is a shot that needs LOTS of practice. I have to practice this shot in the transition zone every single time that I play. You will find the balance in grip pressure and how much you actually have to “volley” the ball. Don’t be perfect! No one is. Just do your best to get that first ball down and try to reset the next ball. Even the pros make mistakes! Check this out th-cam.com/video/9xUM_i06uQQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi Jordan, I was at a clinic put on by Ben Johns and he emphasized what an important shot this is to learn. One video I would like to see would be for good offensive shot options at the line as well as seeing good defensive techniques when you’re trying to reset the point. I would like to have a broader shot offensive arsenal at the line and know where to aim if the ball is attackable (slightly above the net) but I don’t have an angle to hit down at their feet. Thanks Jordan. Your videos are great.
Another great video Jordan. Love your camera angles and slow motion edits along with the written descriptions. Your instructions are always so clear and on point. Very easy to follow and understand what you're trying to teach. If I lived near you I would definitely take lessons with you.
Hi Jordan, your video really helps me a lot leaning about pickle ball! I live in AZ, so could I have a chance to take a lesson with you? I play pickle ball twice a week with friends but my skill is not getting better…:(
Great video! I have that problem and every partner I play with complains that I lift my shots, but nobody tells me how not to do it. You just did. Your wife has great form and looks beautiful when she is playing! 👏🏻👏🏻
Since you are in the transition zone should we always keep the paddle below knee height in a ready position after taking the split shot, then when you arrive at the kitchen move your paddle up to the the waist high position in the ready position?
Thanks for the videos! I don’t know how to hit the balls out of the air like that for a reset. Can you do a video on this? You guys have the best videos for intermediate players. Thanks
Yes, of course. Although the balls that are hit at your feet, are most likely going to have to be half-volleyed. This is also a hard shot. Taking the ball out of the air can be much easier !
Great video. Noticed that all resets were with backhand and there were no resets with half volleys. Hope that means you with touch on these in a future video ? If not please give me your thoughts on forehand resets and half volley resets forehand and backhand. Thanks.
I assume you’re talking about volleys? There’s nothing wrong with swinging if you are intending to hit a swinging volley. With regular push or punch volleys, you want to have a stable paddle face and firm contact out in front. Check our our volley videos!
Thanks Jordan for your reply, I do really appreciate it. You're correct. Min 9:50 of this video is what I'm having trouble with, with balls coming hard and fast. It seems hard to bring my paddle to the right position after many shots. I need to follow your advice and keep practicing with the wall :-) Thank you!
Yes, anytime the ball is coming fast, you should be in block mode. There is no time to swing or follow through. Just try to meet the ball out in front with a stable paddle and hope for the best! 😊
great video....thks...new to the game but love it....do u have a video on your backhand technique at the kitchen...for instance..u hit a backhand coming thru level with an slightly open paddle finishing higher---and the ball went over the net and down...i would have thought that was impossible(maybe just a bad camera angle)...would love to know that technique..thks again

Question: after accidentally speeding up the ball, and presenting a full on slam opportunity to your opponent, what’s the best way to defend against the slam?? Do you have a mindset/technique or approach you use to get the slam back over the net? This video was great, thank you!!
Keep calm, get low, and drop your paddle down. Just like the video. If you can just contact the ball with a good block, you have a good chance of staying in the point!
Jordan, let me preface my comments on your instruction style by saying I'm a long time viewer and have learned so much from you. Plus, I fully intend to continue being one of your biggest fans. That said, here is some "Constructive criticism." You videos are way too long because you repeat things three and four times. Remember, the viewer has the option of backing up the video if they choose to hear it again. Keep up the good work, I consider you my go-to guy when I'm struggling we something in my game.
Some TH-cam consumption platforms and use cases make backing up easy, but others don't. I have a fairly decent Android phone, but I regard it as pretty much unusable for just about anything that requires my giant fingers to peck away at that tiny screen (16 cm on the diagonal, so not small). At the other end of the spectrum my desktop has three monitors and it's super easy to rewind.
Do you have a video explaining how to do the shot where players take all the pace off a ball and it just plops over to the opponents side of the net and just dies?
If you can get the ball down on your opponents then you might be ok but if you’re playing a skilled team and they have a high contact point you’re likely going to be in trouble.
Maybe *open* with her making the shot a few times, go "nice reset shot" and *then* explain a bit. Otherwise start indoors in a film room. Continuous foot faulting. And dude - are those *running* shoes? Your partner saves the day! Overall, a good bit of info on what many would call a half-volley drop shot.
@@primetimepickleball It was a facetious comment. LOL I am well aware you don't have a film room LOL. The search has been called off for your sense of humor. LOL It's cool. LOL Carry on. LOL
You can step back and let it come up if you expect it will bounce high and you can roll it down at opponents feet. You should still try to keep the contact out in front of your body as much as possible so be sure to step back enough.
@@primetimepickleball I like it when they step back cuz it gives me alot of time. Do not like it much out of my partner cuz I know its gonna come back hard and we probably lose the point. Reaction time is the name of the game!
Whoever can figure out how to do these videos without all of the talking, in other words, whoever can do these videos and can talk WHILE the visuals are going on, is going to crush this space. These videos are great, but the first four minutes of this video are totally unnecessary. Literally show the drills and the playing (the Xes and checkmarks while you are explaining the concepts). Too much talking in beginning. Almost 4 minutes before a ball is actually hit. Nice instruction and visuals though once you started actually showing the shot.

Why is she not moving forward after her great resets?
When drilling you don't always follow the shot in so that you can practice the same shot over and over again. In play, she would move forward.
Maybe his WIFE should be teaching him. She has won a lot more points.
She always does a great job of the demo!
