Women were raised to serve their husband and be housewives. Some evangelical teachings say you should be extra strict with little girls, not to let anything go to make them fully submissive.
It wasn't a matter of being dependent on her husband but being scared to death of him. She was obviously very intimidated by him and he was a big guy, more than likely if she got "out of line" he belted her.

Well to be fair, much of the time it is challenged, especially when it’s expressed by Greg. It was actually a fairly progressive show for its time, in that respect. It touched on and challenged stereotyped gender roles, reflecting the growing women’s movement of the time. It was a theme in quite a few episodes.
