I went there when it was open, probably many times between 1966 and 1968. I had tea in that building and and chocolate cake. It was a cafe. You could also get up inside the dome, there are stairs and the dome used to have glass underneath that wood. Originally you could walk around the roof as it was ringed by a protective fence. They closed the dome and blocked the stairs before the whole pier closed down in 1968.

I bought a house in Herne Bay right on the sea front across the road from the sunken gardens in the 1990's, I lived there in 1997 when Princess Diana sadly died and shortly after Canterbury City Council began a program of renewal of the seafront, Bandstand and Sunken gardens right opposite my house, which was 104 Central Parade, which was also named Saxby House! It was the only one in the terrace with a balcony! I discovered in the local library that the original owner was a Sir Edmund Saxby, who had a business in iron ore and smelting works and he had connections with Abraham Darby, a designer, iron smelter and planner of varied projects and they were both connected with Thomas Telford, who built the first ever moving Iron Bridge, in Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire, which is why the whole terrace was named Telford terrace in Herne Bay! These three men and more were involved in the planning and building of the Herne Bay Pier and all were entertained at Saxby house, where I once lived! That is also why it is the only one with a balcony on the front, due to such connections! Fascinating old house and I renovated it too! Now I live in Thailand!

So cool to see it close up. Have stared at it from the beach so many times wondering what is out there. Very spooky and i'm sure there are spirits roaming there from 100 years ago.

Fantastic footage, what puzzles me slightly is that one single upright timber that appears to be holding up what is left of the roof. It doesn't appear to be an original timber and it looks like it's been propped up fairly recently, is anyone else curious about this ?

Hey thank you! It was a little scary but I've started using some Fatsharks, really help with getting in closer, much easier to gauge things!

Hiya there, this one was filmed using a Phantom 4, I'm now using a Mavic but have to say the phantoms were / are excellent pieces of kit!

Hi Mickee, I lived in Herne Bay from 1954 (age 10) until 1968 (still visit regularly). Back in those days the Medway Queen Paddle Steamer made three trips a week - Herne Bay, Southend, Rochester. We had moved from Essex and we used to take the Medway Queen several times a year from Herne Bay to Southend to visit my Granny and Grandad and other relatives in Essex.
