Title: Varroa Mite Treatments: Procedures, Timing, Modes of Action
Description: While they may not be the only tool a beekeeper has available to them, chemical treatments remain an important part of any IPM plan for Varroa mite control. Beekeepers in Ontario have a number of options for Varroa treatments, and they each have their own pros and cons, and specifications for appropriate use. This talk will go over the proper use of the mite treatments registered in Ontario, including the timing of use, temperature considerations, and protective gear to be worn when applying treatments. The mode of action of each treatment - how it acts on the mite to kill it - will also be discussed, along with a note on the development of chemical resistance in mites, and how to prevent it.
