Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō (南 無 妙法 蓮華 經 also transliterated Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō) is a mantra chanted as a central practice of all forms of Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism.
It is literally translated as Devotion to the Lotus Flower Law of Scripture and exegetically translated as Devotion to the mystical law of cause and effect that exists in all sounds and vibrations of the universe.
Myōhō Renge Kyō is the Japanese title of the Lotus Sūtra.
The mantra is referred to as daimoku or, in honorable form, o-daimoku.
It was first revealed by the Japanese Buddhist teacher Nichiren on the 28th day of the fourth lunar month of AD 1253. in Kiyosumi-dera (also Seichōji) near Kominato in present-day Chiba, Japan.
And this mantra describes the essence of Buddhism: the belief that we have within us at all times the ability to overcome any problem or difficulty that we may encounter in life; an ability to transform all suffering.
The purpose of chanting daimoku is to achieve perfect and complete awakening and to have actual proof of this practice to oneself and others of the validity of the Lotus Sutra.
