thats nice and most people dont have access to airbags.... its better to keep some 2 x 6 sections in your cab. a couple for each landing gear would be ideal ... and you put those under the landing gear and you will be able to lift it up higher with the same effort ... this is a must if you are training peeps
I use to be a jockey at an intermodal yard. The damm asshole kids they hired, use to leave the trailers extremely high. I carried a 4x4 and would put it under the rear plate on the 5th wheel. As soon as the driver got the pin on the front of the 5th wheel, I’d stop him and pull the wood out. Once he pulled out, I’d back underneath, lift the trailer, hop out and lower the landing gear where it belonged. And I’d wait til the driver had the trailer safely locked. I got fired for getting hurt.( was supposed to be on lunch break but was helping drivers)
If you follow 3 simple rules when backing under a trailer this will probably never happen 1- learn to judge the height of the trailer as you approach it before backing into it ( experience is the best teacher for this) 2- if you don't feel the tractor contact the trailer or feel it squat down to take the weight of the trailer STOP and look. 3- if hooking to an empty trailer watch for it to lift a little in your mirror and if you don't see any lifting STOP and look.
