  • Today I had the privilege to sit down with professional dog trainer Tom Rose. Tom has accomplished more in the dog training industry than most people can even hope for. He's won dog training competitions time after time with dogs he raised and trained, as well as becoming the first American to score a perfect on an FH track. He pioneered and developed the celebrated Puppy Imprinting Program. He coined the phrase "imprinting" as it applies to dogs. He is the first to import the Belgian Malinois breed to the United States. He's authored three major dog training books. Tom began using his extensive experience to help many canine professionals by establishing the Tom Rose School for professional dog trainers. The Tom Rose School curriculum requires students to successfully accomplish industry-recognized objectives and requirements. Because of this, TRS graduated a major percentage of the foremost trainers in the world, and his students who start their own businesses succeed consistently.

    This was one of the most interesting interviews on dog training ever. What a tremendous insight into a lifetime of dogs and training. You are both 100% correct. If you find a trainer that thinks he knows it all. You need to keep looking. As once you aren’t receptive to new ideas you will quickly drop off the pace. Dog training has evolved and will continue to do so. It’s what keeps you hooked for life. Well done Tom and Nate.. 🇬🇧

      @@NateSchoemer No problem. Credit where it’s due. I personally found it interesting because I have experiences remarkably similar to Toms. Being involved with dog training since the mid 1970s. Taking my first payments for training in 1979. So if that’s the reference point for being professional, quite a long time. But of course it’s a journey. That’s what I found particularly interesting. Being an active training kennels we always have 15 to 20 dogs come and go every month. For remedial training. Frequently aggressive and anywhere from stimulated reactive with little or no aggression right up to dogs with a significant bite history. If l could travel to USA Tom and yourself along with Michael Ellis and Ivan Balabanov would be trainers I’d like to visit with..

    Thank you for this podcast. I really enjoyed it. It was very educational. I went on Tom Rose’s website. I haven’t had a dog in many years. I was looking for a school for dog trainers that was very knowledgeable and experienced to train me. You are an inspiration to me as a future dog trainer and your TH-cam channel, which I watch regularly, I use your book and your TH-cam Dog Trainer Course together, thank you for both.Tom Rose School have the Pet Obedience course for trainers I need to start off with. Thank so very much for being there for the serious dog trainers that want to help dogs and people. Stay safe.

    I’ve just found you and your videos after “waking up” after being able to learn how to safely live with the pandemic. I have an English Springer/poodle mix who is *amazing.* We got lazy and are now are getting her up to speed to get her GKC and then therapy certification.
    “The Algorithm” sprinkles in those interviews and I’m finding the kindest people are the best trainers. It helps my heart.

    Just going through some of your 'older' videos. This is a real gem. Your discussion about tools towards the end was particularly poignant. Unfortunately here in Australia right now we're going through the process of having people who don't understand ANYTHING at all about dogs and the tools that can be used to train them, influencing politicians to institute blanket bans on particular tools because they are 'cruel'. As Tom said - your shoe can be the cruellest implement used in dog training if you want it to be...do we make ALL dog trainers go barefoot because some physcho MIGHT kick their dog? Regrettably, its a sign of the times in many aspects of life. The result is going to be people implementing old-school methods for dog training that are abusive, because they can't access tools that allow them to communicate more effectively with their dogs. Education is paramount - not banning things just because some idiot has the potential to be cruel with it...
    I'm getting a bit older so its not really practical for me to take 6 months out and go and train at Tom's school, but it would be a great opportunity for anyone that is really interested in developing as a trainer, and in really helping out dogs & families have the best life together they can have.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I would be distraught if they did something stupid, like banning the use of remote collars in the US. My dogs would be bummed, too, since the remote collar is what allows them to run and play off-leash every day at a local park. Without the remote collars, I wouldn't be able to be a responsible dog owner and allow them to run through the fields without any control. Unfortunately, so many individuals either want to virtue signal by saying they don't use remote collars or banning them without being properly educated on it. Sometimes ignorance is not bliss.
      Thanks for your comment and supporting the channel.
      Cheers!

    Nate! I want to bring up a concern of mine when it comes to your facebook community: Prong collars! And the fact that A Lot of people in the community are suggesting these collars as a quick and "pain free" way of solving leash walking problems. Could you adress this in a video, and what you think about it. I'm very curious about your opinion on this...since the big reason to why I started following your videos and joined the community was your positive reinforcement methods - not prong collar methods. And I live in Norway where prong collars are illegal. So everything prong collar to me seems like outdated training techniques that I would never turn to.
    Thanks for all the inspiring content so far!

    Legitimate question: Tom said that the video of puppies being thrown into the water was all the students idea and not the schools idea, but if thats true then how come he didn't address the OTHER video that was shared at the same time of his own HEAD INSTRUCTOR tossing a student's puppy into the water alongside the students too?? It feels like there are some holes in the story.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. The video was taken over 2 years ago and everyone in the video was a student. That training is not part of the curriculum at the school. A common saying we have in the Marine Corps is, "Good initiative, bad judgment!" Due to lack of experience, the students thought they were doing something good for the pups, but clearly, they were not. It's no excuse, but measures have been taken by Tom to ensure that no unauthorized training will take place again on school property.

      @@NateSchoemer hey Nate thank you for reply! I am confused though, you are saying that the 2nd video of the Head Instructor throwing a labrador puppy in the water, was NOT the head instructor and just a student?
