    Tonight I came across this painting and I was shocked. I look exactly like Ophelia is portrayed in this painting, and I felt such a connection to her that I had to learn more about this piece. Absolutely beautiful painting but a little disturbing to see my face as if I had drowned lol

      Wow, that is a strange experience. A while back there was a facebook group where people shared pictures of themselves with their doppelgänger in art. I can't remember the name, but you should be on it!

    I would love stories of so-called outsider art, especially Rosseau. Your research & exposition are most illuminating!

    I usually will follow the comedies of Shakespeare rather than the tragedies. But this painting brought to life the pain and loss suffered by those who just can't take it. No shrinks available to help them cope. But egad it's so beautiful. Thank you,

    Thank you for an excellent explanation/story of this "stunning" picture. You certainly breath life into the history. I had also heard that the foliage was so precise that it was used in a botany class. Subscribed!

      I have done a gallery of largish Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood Prints of the Lady of Shallot in various throes of her agony on looking at good old Lancelot but I needed to fill a space to complete the wall and included this painting of Ophelia just above a print of the L of S floating along in her boat, having died. I thought grouping two dead floaty women worked thematically. I love all of these prints and NEVER tire of the richness of colour and the beauty of the composition.

    Thank you for posting opium was actually invented in 3000 BC so it existed during Shakespeare as well. I enjoyed this but I believe your speech might be less choppy if you practice before you film. Just a suggestion

    • @storiesofart
      @storiesofart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are right. It was invented ages before Shakespeare. It was not available in England though. It was imported in large quantities in the 19th century. And thank you for your suggestion. I'll give it a try!

    • @Saffron-sugar
      @Saffron-sugar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stories Of Art You are right. True, opium did not arrive in England, in any quantity, until the silk road of the 18th century and did not gain popularity until the 19th century. However Opium was in France and Italy by the Middle Ages and, therefore, would have been known of by Shakespeare and many others by the 15 and 1600’s. I do not believe that there was much in Denmark during Shakespeare’s day, but I don’t know if he ever actually ever went to Denmark. He May well have gone to Italy, nobody is sure. But a third of Shakespeare’s plays are based there so he must have learned a bit about it.

  • @Stadtpark90

    One wonders if the painter knew about the Opioids the Model was taking, and foresaw her own tragic death… - would have expected a comment along that way: well, maybe that was a lot later? But it still rhymes.
