I bought the Kink Whip 2021 about 7 months ago after deciding to get back into bmx after 16 years. It’s amazing and seriously blows my mind that it’s so affordable. In 2002 that bike would cost over 1k. Thanks for all the killer content man!
I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't rode bmx since I was around 19 years. I've always bought from Dans Competition. I want something cheaper, but also have sealed bearings and possibly double walled rims.
Good to know, hoping your not affiliated with the company, but my dad has a little over 1acre in woods, I'm turning that into a hidden bmx park with some jumps and am wondering if the bike you choose would be perfect for that!?
Just got my kink whip xl a few days ago after nearly 20 years of not riding. I’m loving it. The only thing Ive changed so far was chopping an inch off each side of the bars and replaced the grips with the sunday seeleys just to have the color I wanted. The difference between this and the bikes we destroyed growing up is insane. Love the geometry, the shorter wheelbase compared to my old pos bikes is nice. I’m 35yo 5’8” and 220 lbs. bought it after watching this.
I upgraded to a Kink Whip last month for trails, and man this is where it’s at. It takes a beating my favorite so far and I’ve had other kinks, Sundays, eastern, even a framed, and the whip takes the win.
I got a kink gap xl back in 2016. I still ride it after replacing half of the bike. It was not great quality. Within a year the cranks broke after a couple months, the hub started skipping really bad, the sprocket teeth wore out, chain stretched within a couple months. The grips and pedals also sucked, no grip. The good parts are bars, forks, and stem. No issues with those. I'm not a great rider, just bunny hops and dropping off stuff, and messing around with ledges. Double wall is a must if you gonna do drops. I replaced both wheels, demolition whistler in back, and odyssey hazard in front. Got cult deathrow cranks (love those cranks), madera sprocket, new chain, etc. I didn't know much about bmx at the time but in hind sight I would choose something around $700 or even more so that I don't end up replacing half the bike within a year. I don't trust kink quality at that price range.
My friend has a Sunday EX and took has took a fair few slams and the bike hasnt moved one bit and has never had any issues with the single wall rims . its solid
I went with the Kink Switch, which came with a freecoaster and removable brake mounts if I decide to go brakeless. Retail was $499, paid $509 at my local shop.
I used to work for a large company that sold bikes.... £200 for a full 4130 cromoly 21” f&f. Tubular 4130 3 piece cranks, 4130 bars. Sealed bearings, etc etc..... so good I bought one with a staff discount..... £150 all in.... what was this Bike.... a Mongoose! Awesome!
I bought a new Kink Gap XL back in June/July for $379 out the door. For the price it has been a great bike. I'm in the 30+ gang and wanted to dip my toes into BMX, yet buy something from a reliable company. Now that I'm riding every day and I know I'm going to stick with it, I'm going to start upgrading things as they break or wear out. So far, I have had ZERO problems with the Gap XL and I've been hucking it off of small stair sets, jumping banks, riding in a 5' concrete bowl (and doing a crap job of flyouts), jumping kickers, etc, and I have definitely not been gentle with it.
That's really great to hear. There's no doubt that non full chromoly bikes can hold up to abuse, it's just not something I feel I can confidently recommend for most people the same way I do with full chromoly bikes that have double walled rims and sealed hubs.
@@Brant_Moore Yeah, honestly I wish I would have known a little more about it before I bought the Gap because I would have gone with the Whip XL just to get a more solid foundation. I'm confused as to why the 21" Whip is nearly a pound heavier.
I bought a Gap in 2016 and slowly broke everything, but not a bad value especially with the the discounts kink gives you to replace parts that are out of warranty! The biggest let downs for me were the wheels and cranks. I noticed Brant didn’t note which bikes moved into using wedge style cranks which is something I look for when recommending bikes.
Can you go a little deeper on what you mean by wedge style cranks? It’s not something I’m familiar with. The majority of the bikes on this list use very similar pinch bolt cranks that are all pretty much the same. There are a couple that have different cranks which maybe I should’ve touched on a little bit. All of the bikes in the top 5 though have very similar cranks

KINK WHIP, such a sweet bike... theu c could have made 2 times asany this year, and it would still be hard to find already before March happens... craziness how hard it is to catch ANY GOOD BMX in stock right now... Thanks for the video! You mention shops, if a local isn't a great option .... So far I have purchased stuff from Albes, Source, JRBicycles, and Amain(have been an amain cust for years for RC car stuff).... Looking at a FIRST real BMX for my daughter, missed out on the Whip my shop had, and they dont know when they will get ANY more of ANY brand BMX this year.... all they have left is 21" stuff.... she is turning 11, and 5' tall, likely not going to ever surpass 5'5"-5'7"...but u never know... 2 bikes in stock at places that i have found she is agreeable with the color of.... Fit STR in matte peach.... and W.T.P. CRS in Galactic Purple.... would you please check those out and tell me if there is any big differences that I should take note of... aside from finish, and pegs on the Fit, they seem very similar in quality, build, geometry, etc... aside from 0.25" TT difference... She rides her brother's 20" TT Elite Destro just fine, but seems to prefer MY 2019 Fit Spriet, which is 20.5 TT, with similar back end to both options... not sure of she prefers mine as it isnt her brothers, or because it isn't black, or because it has a NICE seat...lol Any input would be GREATLY appreciated... this will be her first non-walmart kind of bike....for general kid riding....so maybe any real bmx is overkill, but... it's her birthday...
Things are definitely crazy right now with bikes!! I’d say if they’re that similar in all of those things they’re probably almost the same bike just from different brands aside from one being an 18” and one being a 20”. I’d say check out stackedbmxshop online as well. When it comes to the bike decision, it comes down to which you think she’d prefer between an 18” and a 20” and if the pegs matter since they’re essentially the same thing

@@Brant_Moore thanks. Lol somehow the height around 4 feet was not discussed... But based on 4'6 is still 18 inches, I think we will go with the 18 inches. Any bikes (brand/model) you would recommend for 18in wheel?
It does look like a solid bike. I used pricing from the companies website’s and not mail orders. Not sure what kept it out of the list but I do remember checking haro’s site. Might be a difference in the 2020 vs 2022
Brant! Would a person weight be something to consider? I'm 270 down from 290 recently, and my ideal weight it 220 to 240. I'm 5'10. Hoping to pick up the kink whip. Either xl or regular. But might get a cheap "custom" off of Facebook for $90. Its a Vegas specialized bike. Idk whats custom or stock on it. 20 inch wheels, and 20 inch top tube.
Would not recommend getting the specialized over the kink whip. If you’re going to get something used you’ll want it to be better than the kink whip already is.
@@Brant_Moore I'm just thinking for now get the used bmx and hopefully get the whip in a year or sooner. I have a wife and kids and my wife has a hard time making big purchases. Doesn't mind $20 here $50 there. But even the specialized, she's not too sure about $90.
The issue with all these bikes is 8 spline cranks. If you weigh less than 150lbs it might not be a problem but an adult is going to wear them out pretty quick.
I’m 32, 5’11’ and 135lbs. I can tell you the only times my 8 spline cranks have come loose is after I spent a day learning sprocket stalls on various objects. Even then, they didn’t wiggle at, just creaking noise until I tightened it back up. My cousins 48 spline cranks come loose just pedaling to a riding location though 🤷♂️
I mean...can you really expect a completely solid bike that will have no issues at all between $440-$600? The parts should last long enough to make upgrades by choice and not by necessity
@@Thatblackz28 no offense but 135lbs is pretty light mate. I weigh 190 and won't ride 8 spline. Sounds like your mates cranks weren't installed properly 🤷
@@Brant_Moore no, I guess not Brant. I'd just like to see the cranks last longer as IMO your less likely to change them out to adjust your geometry. But then your right they only need to last as long as it takes to get that upgrade itch.
Unless you find a 2021 for retail price, yes. The 2022 has seen a price bump, but I would think that it’s possible it could drop the price of the 2021’s that are out there
@@Brant_Moore my guess is it will still get around the same price since im living in eu, maybe getting the cult access and slowly upgrading the parts will be the smarter choice? I have ONE somewhat local shop that I try to support, it is about 70 miles... away... which stores would you suggest I try to check out online?
She rides her brother's 20" TT Elite Destro just fine, but seems to prefer MY 2019 Fit Spriet, which is 20.5 TT, with similar back end to both options... not sure of she prefers mine as it isnt her brothers, or because it isn't black, or because it has a NICE seat...lol
Any input would be GREATLY appreciated... this will be her first non-walmart kind of bike....for general kid riding....so maybe any real bmx is overkill, but... it's her birthday...
@@Brant_Moore all the Local shop had in stock right now were 21" top tubes....
The 2 bikes I am looking at are 20" bikes, just one is 20.25" top tube, one 20.5" ...BUT, in just checking, the FIT is now out of stock.....so, I may buy/order the CRS of it is still available today... my girlfriend's son got the CRS last year and it's been a good bike, not a lot has changed besides color and now sealed front hub was added...
Thanks for the heads up on another store to check, cheers...
Was the Kink Whip $340 USD a year or two ago? Still an incredible value by all means
I think it was $419
@@Brant_Moore you are exactly right lol. I was probably thinking of a different kink complete
Haha yea for some reason that number was in my head on it.
Probably the gap or next tier down
@@Brant_Moore it was the Gap lol
I have some Alex supra A pros single walls that are super strong , I just can’t handle the spoke nipples popping my tubes , so swapped em out for some supra j pro triple walls? Much better
I think it all depends on what make of Bmx you support and like and what geometry you want it’s all personal preference really 👍🚲💨
Mongoose legion L100 was 399.99 for fully sealed and full cro-mo but they recently made it 419.99 for the cheapest colorway and a little more for the other colorways
Thank you so much for this info! Would you mind advising about the Stay Strong Optimum PRK BMX bike? I'm ready to get back into riding again and this bike looks great. Your advice is much appreciated!
Based on specs it would probably be okay for a bit but I would upgrade some things within the first year.
If you wanted to get something like a Fit PRK I have a 10% off discount code ordering from the Fit site.
@Brant_Moore OK, cool. I appreciate the feedback! Thoughts on the Whip 2023?
The kink whip is always a great value for what you get for the money.
@Brant_Moore The man who doesn't sleep! Lol love it, mah dood. The Stay Strong is originally $459 but is on sale for $229, while the Whip is $499. Both Chromoly etc. What specs would you suggest upgrading on the Stay Strong considering they are/were roughly the same price?
The stay strong isn’t 100% chromoly like the whip
I got a fit bmx a couple months ago and then I think I’m going to upgrade it as stuff brakes cause I am just starting but I wanted something that will hold up for me
Fits are super nice take care of it bud
@@DentSideDee71 ya I just got a new pair of bars and grips I just need a new brake cable cause I don’t ride like I used to I used to ride everyday but I got bored since my mom won’t let me ride anywhere alone and she doesn’t have a truck like my dad
@@DentSideDee71 but anytime I do get to bring it somewhere I do cause I still love riding I have been riding for like 20 minutes in my driveway a couple times a day since I got the new grips
@@DentSideDee71 I subbed and turned notifications on
@@caseymendoza2115 get you a nice Adjustable crescent wrench for on the go just take your rims off and throw your bike in the car like I do watch out for the bar ends you don’t wanna ruin your moms Headboard and what fit you got? I gotta 2018 Brandon begin signature I love my bike it’s super dialed I just cleaned and oiled it up she’s sweeeet haha !
So I got what I'm pretty sure is the last 2021 devotion new in box on the market and now I'm pretty sad that I didn't get the legion. Nearly the same features and price but the legion has the free coaster
Lmao did you just compare a cult to a haro sheesh
Can you recommend any BMX freestyle for a 51 inch tall kid (10 year old)? My boy likes to ride around the vault and ramp and wants to ride more in skate parks. He bent his regular bike front rim from jumping (we parents are new to BMX) so we want to get him a better bike for the jumps. But our local shops all carry different brands, and some suggest 18 in wheel, some say 20 in. I want to hear from others what they recommend. Thanks. (He is not looking to do rail tricks, mostly just vault and ramps)
I’ve got a whole video dedicated to exactly that! Just search what size BMX do I need?
Glad to hear your son is so into it!
@@Brant_Moore thanks. Lol somehow the height around 4 feet was not discussed... But based on 4'6 is still 18 inches, I think we will go with the 18 inches. Any bikes (brand/model) you would recommend for 18in wheel?
Sunday Bikes and Kink BMX make great 18” bikes!
What no haro midway? Its around 400 on danscomp and its full chromoly and everything is sealed
It does look like a solid bike. I used pricing from the companies website’s and not mail orders. Not sure what kept it out of the list but I do remember checking haro’s site. Might be a difference in the 2020 vs 2022
2021*
this is a nice video and talk.
I checked the kink website and they dont have the 2021 whip anymore they have the 2022 which is way more expensive😢
Ah man yea they are. Understandable though with the increases in everything across the board
wish i had a local bmx shop
Are The prices in American or Canadian????
American
The Elite cmndr is affordable and has great specs.
With weight being a consideration, I can’t recommend a bike like that. Specialized has never been known to make good bmx bikes.
@@Brant_Moore thanks for being honest and thanks for answering!
@@Brant_Moore one last thing at the moment at least, kink whip or whip xl with the weight concern?
what bmx should i get if i want a street bmx
Sunday or fit
Sunday darkwave
Any good budget bikes for someone who is 5’9 with a budget of $250?
Sunday or fit
I got a 2019 WTP Reason for $175 without the wheels. I don't need a $300 wheel set anyway lol
hahaha THere you go!
Sweet
@@Brant_Moore do you have any experience with the Primo Powerbites? I like pinch bolts cause they help with the spindle bolt staying tight.
100 buck used bmx on offerup/ facebook market place is a pretty good deal ngl
Not if it’s a piece of junk
Got a 2011 fit vh1 for $100
Good for getting back into the sport after 14 years lol. Ill upgrade here and there...

Mongoose is straight OG bedda put some speck on it name boy
The mongoose legions are pretty shit.
Gotta love living in europe, kink whip is out of stock everywhere and it costs 734$
Probably because of the switch from 2021 to 2022 models
@@Brant_Moore that means i should wait for the 2022 models?
Unless you find a 2021 for retail price, yes.
The 2022 has seen a price bump, but I would think that it’s possible it could drop the price of the 2021’s that are out there
@@Brant_Moore my guess is it will still get around the same price since im living in eu, maybe getting the cult access and slowly upgrading the parts will be the smarter choice? I just stopped riding scooters and upgrading was really complicated, lots of different standarts and sizes. Wonder if it is easier on the bmx?
Yo what up brant. Trying to grow my new TH-cam channel and would love to do a collaboration with you this spring or summer if you’re down and if you wanted to make a trip down to Illinois to shred the new backyard set up we are building at my new house.
That'd be cool if I'm ever out that way man. Would be rad to ride with all you guys
I’ve owned mongoose bike mainly the l100 their bikes fall apart don’t buy their headsets and cranks r what break
United Martinez 21'' is the best value
im gonna learn how to ride but im 5'9 and young and still growing
Spend 120 more and get a 24” 😎
Kink Whip.
damn them prices i guess walmart is my choice
A real bmx bike is still cheaper than the hospital bill that could come from buying a bike that can't handle real bmx riding.
DK Flux is now $699
Yea all of the prices have gone up
Shout out my boys ridin a fit str
Someone stole my kink bmx
Bro be honest, have you been doing any drugs?
