This game really had everything. An insane comeback by one team, an insane comeback again, an onside kick recovery, a kickoff return for TD, a lateral on a kickoff return that went for a TD, a fumble return for a TD, a couple of interceptions, overtime, and a big defensive stop on 4th and short to seal it. Blown calls from the referees that went both ways, 2 point conversions, it really did have it all.
Even though the Lions didn't end up winning, It still shows that no matter how bad it might look for a team, the game isn't over until the clock strikes 00:00
I'm not even a Lions fans, I used to be a Redskins fan. But in my opinion, the greatest Lions game, possibly the best NFL game ever, was Lions vs Cowboys. Stafford lead the team down the field, and at the goal line, fake spiked and dove over the end zone line. I was cheering, and it wasn't even my team. Most exciting game I ever watched.
I'm watching this and thinking wow the refs are horrible...... Then I hear the comment that they're replacement refs. I completely forgot about that happening
@@jeffk4710 the regular officials were on strike. The league replaced them with officials who didn't do a very good job. The most infamous game was probably the "Fail Mary" between Green Bay and Seattle, but it was far from the only one.
@@emeraldaly7646 What was it again? Like 4 weeks of chaos and everyone wishing the old Refs back? And then once they were back it was quickly forgotten and people started bitching about the old refs again. lol
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how good Jason Hanson was? Dude was in his 21st season and was still clutch. Kept the Lions in this game through 3 quarters until the offense finally got clicking.
Damn. Titus Young. There was a time there when Stafford, Young, Johnson, and Best looked like they were going to dominate the league for a while. Best never fully got over that concussion from college and Young went insane. At least Stafford and Johnson had success.
This was during a period of upheaval for the NFL. They had the players lockout in the 2011 offseason and then the referee lockout that lasted until Week 4 of 2012. There were also several big rule changes dealing with player safety that angered many fans and players.
This was probably the highlight game of Jake lockers career sadly. If he wasn't so injury prone I think he could have been better. He had great arm strength and was quick on his feet.
Jason Hanson's last season of his 21 year kicking career with the Lions. He got a chance to play with Barry, Megatron, Stafford and Suh. And of course Joey Harrington and Dan Orlovsky too. lol Quite the career!
It is sad to remember that Jake Locker retired because he gave up on the sport he loved. Might have been due to his injuries and/or playing for the Titans.
I was at this game, as a musician I was in Nashville with my band. We were from Michigan, our manager asked if we would like to go watch the lions play… heck yeah! Turned into one of the craziest games of all time!
@@andrewgillett5411 wasn't even a hip drop, they're legs just got tangled together and the injury happened because Godwins foot got stuck in the turf. the tackle on Zay was, and the one on lamer was questionable.
I remembered I was a senior in high school and watching this game live at my cousins house. That was the best Lions game I’ve ever seen in my life. While I really miss Calvin Johnson, we now have Dan Campbell and a possible Super Bowl appearance
Was at this game with my cousin and uncle. After Verner stripped the ball and scored we starting to make our way towards the exits. I'm watching glimpses of the final few minutes through the TV's on the concourse. As soon as we got to the gates of no return the Lions recovered the onside kick and there were fans running back to the gates from outside trying to get back in the stadium. Next thing there's a crowd of people outside the stadium gates trying to catch the final seconds on the jumbotron. Once the Lions forced OT the crowed got bigger and we started walking towards the Korean BLVD bridge to get a better view of the Jumbotron, and once again there was a crowd of people lined up on the bridge, some even drove back and parked their cars on the shoulder on the bridge to watch the OT. Also this was the 1st OT game were a field goals on the 1st drive doesn't end the game
My wife and I had a couple over to watch this with us. It was the one and only time this couple watched a Lions game with us, so any time I see a highlight from this game I remember where I was. I will forever have ingrained in me the memory of that hail mary. I was sitting on the loveseat to the right of the TV, my wife and our two friends were on the other couch to my left, across from the TV. I remember seeing that hail mary ball fly through the air, recognizing that Akeem Ayers batted the ball down, and seeing Titus Young do what so many of us did as kids playing "jackpot" ir "500" at school, be in the right place at the right time to catch a batted ball. Upon that instant realization the hail mary was successful, my legs turned into Apollo engines, as if I had no control over them. I sprung up and jumped in the air with the typical crazed holler associated with a caught hail mary. I looked over mid-launch to my left, to see and hear my wife and our two friends also springing up into the air at the same time, all with their own intense celebratory exclamation.
My son and I were at the game (I am season ticket holder), and we were around a number of Lions fans. All of us were in shock in that 4th quarter with so much rapid scoring. I have been to games there since the beginning (1999), and that is still the craziest game in that stadium's history.
I was at this game! My dad wanted to leave with 2 min left, but we drove from Michigan to watch and i said “anything can happen.” Boy was this the most exciting ending ever! Although they lost it was worth the stay!
Wow, I'm not gonna lie, the thing that blew my mind the most was realizing that Jason Hanson was still the Lions kicker in 2012. I thought for sure he was gone in the early 2000s.
If there is roughing the passer after the ball was thrown for an interception. That should not negate the interception. Add 15 yards to the other offensive team. It's so stupid. Disclaimer... I am not a fan of either of these teams...just saying. The ball was thrown before the throw down.
I absolutely lost it when 260lb Pettigrew allowed a CB to rip the ball outta his hands. Hated him for years afterwards, lol. This also started the "We can replace Stafford with Shaun Hill" campaign that a lot of idiot fans pushed.
Never saw this game but heard about it. With all the rule changes (regarding on sides kicks) unlikely it will ever happen again. Just an amazing ending with two evenly matched teams.
Every time I watch one of these old “great” games that involve the lions they lose.. EVERY TIME. Been so great recently almost forgot how awful it was being a fan before Campbell .
As I said in the Commanders/Bears game: You have to get your palm on the ball not your fingertips if you want to bat the ball down (which the Titan did) it was just their bad luck a Lion was there to catch it.
To those wondering about the missed calls: The NFL refs were in a lockout due to the previous CBA expiring and no new deal was in place. They had to get less qualified referees from...other sources. The whole situation came to a head a couple weeks later when the Seahawks beat the Packers on the "Fail Mary" and a new deal was QUICKLY struck after that.

Yup, remember 2-3 years back the 49ers were up 38-10 on the Lions late in the 3rd, and Lions damn near came back in that game.
Similar to Seattle vs Carolina 2016 nfc divisional.
Seattle almost came back after being down 31-0 sadly lost 31-24
