I just moved to a cottage in the north of Sweden. Life hit me pretty hard. I used to live in Miami being around street violence, guns, death, and I even used to eat $3 a day, 25 cents noodles, expired toast and canned campbell tomato soup. I survived the Boston Marathon Bombing which was a few feet away and I saw all the blood the people screaming and I was alone at 18. I also used to live in a room with no kitchen, trash bag as a window and bugs crawling on me at night. I ended up moving states (from LA to Miami) and ended up working a job where I had to literally hope I don't get shot or robbed while working overnight near one of the most dangerous areas. So I ended up takin boxing to protect myself and learned how to defend against bigger threats. Now I live in a cabin in the north of Sweden where I run an online business, I go down to a lake to breathe and heal my past and I post on TH-cam to help others who need it the most 💜
Rosie, you're living in the woods alone by yourself. No one to talk to or visit. I live alone in the city by myself...no one to talk to and rarely any visitor ...What difference does it make? Except with modern facilities and convenience 😊. You're doing a great job in creating a life doing things you want. Very inspirational 👏 ❤
There’s a big difference. You see hear & probably have to interact with people. You have people around in case you need help. Living alone in the woods like I do & like she does, there is No One. If a wild animal attacks you, there’s no one to help you. She’s walking 16 miles for groceries. Do you do that? She lives for weeks only having herself to talk to. Your lifestyle doesn’t come close to comparing.
@@kit2130but my dear she clearly made a free choice to live this way. It does take a lot of courage to make that choice for which I appreciate her a lot. At the same time we need to undand that we who live in the cities can feel lonely in spite of having neighbors and crowds around us. I live an apartment which is very cozy and comfortable with all the modern facilities but I literally yearn to live an off grid life in a tiny home amidst mountains,trees and all the nature around me. Rosie~ This was one of my favorite videos you have made yet!! Why? Because it is so honest and forthright and so needed! Your thoughts about not moving there to make your neighbors responsible for your choices not to have a vehicle of your own... This shows your genuine desire to attempt to live off-grid.... really off-grid! I'm turning 68 this Saturday and I've lived alone for the past 16+ years since I lost my husband to cancer. I had never lived alone ever before that. I was married at 17 and my husband and I began building our own home immediately after we married. He was in the building trades so he taught me everything about building our home. When we laid the block foundation he handed me a trowel and showed me what to do. Together we built our home one project at a time... adding on to it four times... always doing most of the work ourselves. I moved away from that home 5 years ago into a brand new smaller home just my size, with my two cats and a small yard where I've made flower gardens. This Spring I'm attempting to put in a frog pond by myself (with the help of a 9 yr old neighbor boy who loves frogs). I'm expecting my 16th grandchild in August... so life is full. I tell you some of these details because I, too, have made conscious choices. I love spending time alone. I love all the beauty of God's magnificent creation. I love starting seedlings with my granddaughters and watching them sprout ( the seedlings and the children)! We take walks on a secret lane nearby where God brings out multitudes of meadow deer for me to feed. They come right to me, and almost eat from my hand. There is so much Joy in that moment especially when one of my grandkids is with me! Your videos are so fun to watch. And you inspire us all more than you know.... even across the ocean here in NJ, USA! Thank you for this special video which brought out so much truth... I often say I wish we could go back to a time with no devices! The way things used to be when people actually talked to one another and cared for each other and helped one another.... and lived off the land... and shared what they produced with one another. @Maria CANCER Sugar feeds cancer as other foods do. I've found the ketogenic way of eating helpful with diabetes and asthma and weight loss. Carbohydrates are my enemy. I've heard other people's testimony about reversing cancer. It seems the further away I've gone from western medicine the healthier I've become. After I watched this week’s video I read the comments. I wholeheartedly agree with your subscribers. I am 73 and at age 70 I moved to a five-acre organic farm on the slopes of the world’s tallest volcano , Maunakea. I lived off grid in a container home. I knew it would be temporary but I lived in the moment as if it wasn’t . I remember one morning walking to the the end of the container to make coffee and I heard in my awareness, “Now you know how to survive.” Your experience is inspiring and extremely authentic. You are contributing so much beyond what you know🙏👏
@@savingsiskola If you do a search on Google Images type in Waimea, Island of Hawaii I lived at 3900 ft elevation. Waimea is home to many homesteads with five acre parcels of agricultural land. Rich fertile land for growing greens and many native speciality fruits and produce. The Big Island is comprised of 4000 sq miles and made from five volcanoes. Two active! Absolutely exquisite. Perhaps Rosing will visit one day for amazing some hiking!
I am so grateful for your inspiration Rosie. When I found my current home on an island I was enormously happy to discover it had no drainage, a septic tank, a rainwater tank, outdoor bathroom, outdoor laundry, fruit trees, land for growing food and a shadehouse. It is difficult as a tenant to move toward self sufficient offgrid living. This is a stepping stone in the river of my dream. Keep cycling 😊

Before finishing watching the rest of the video, I just have to say that when you spoke of being unsanitary with your outhouse, there are generations before you that survived and thrived using them. My Grandmother was born in 1890 and lived until 1968 with outdoor potty. She lived 2 months short of 100 !!! So... lol !
Right, and guess what? My grandmother lived up til 1993 within the house without flushing toilet and died happy… by the way I visit Her to very last of her days and spend the time in this house… smiling and being way hapier then today…😢

Life experiences and meeting challenges does change us and, hopefully, they make us stronger. I was a 6 year old girl, middle child, growing up in Ohio in the 40s. We originally lived in town, but then rented a house in the country for $25 a month. It had no running water, a wood cook stove, a huge coal burning furnace in the middle of the living room, a crank telephone, and no heat upstairs where I slept. But, looking back on these times, I really had a great childhood and didn't really miss anything. We had a barn to play in with bales of straw that we would climb up and swing down into the piles of loose straw below using a rope attached to a pully. That was the best!! Rosie, you are not the 'normal" city person because you have traveled extensively and so in a way you already knew what you could tolerate as far as amenities. It is important to know that you live the way YOU want to live, there is no need for explanations or for us to understand you. Everyone is different and unique and you are living what I would call off the grid and that is absolutely 100% fine with us. It is enjoyable to see the way you live and it personally gives me a greater appreciation for what I have. You have created the life that you enjoy. That's all that matters.

You are living intentionally and challenging yourself each day and by doing that you’re in touch with so many things that most people will never experience. I so admire you and am inspired by you. Awesome video Rosie. I made a similar move almost 10 years ago and love my life. Some of it is easier with a car and a flush toilet. I often don’t speak to people for days. I can see them on my terms!! I have three dogs and a cat that found us. Keep these great updates coming!

It’s hard for others to imagine, but some of us don’t need people THAT badly. You might be a highly sensitive person like me, who gets overstimulated easily. Slow, solitary, creative life is what we’re made for.
I grew up back in the 50''s like that. We lived different places but we always came back to the little house cause it was home. We had a hand pump off the back porch and I know well how to prime it as it was my job to pump the water. We never worried about pipes freezing. I see you going to the toilet in house shoes and I can remember running to the toilet barefoot in the snow with my long nightgown on. Daddy trapped and hunted our meat and mama canned everything. It was all so different and it did depend always on the weather. I took baths in the round metal tub and we washed our clothes by hand. And thats how it went. We were as clean as anyone and didn't need a TV. Those were the happiest years. Laurie from Idaho

The fact that you talk to your devices, send your thoughts and life out into the world and receive comments and feedback is communicating with people but in a different way. You have the safety of knowing that if we don’t hear from you for a while that there may be something wrong. I’m sure you have that set up with your family. At 65, in 2018 I travelled around Asia backpacking solo. At times I was very much alone and learned how to enjoy me and my own company. I did send out videos on Facebook every day or two and when I hadn’t sent one out for a few days my friends would send me a message to make sure I was ok. It was a good safety net for me. You are amazing and I just love to see and follow your journey. Take care.

I actually live in Solitude and also live very very rustic lifestyle extremely Rural one of the reasons I love 💗 your channel because I don’t feel as if I am the only person living very rural and rustic but I am in my late sixties it’s not always easy living in Solitude but I am used to living this lifestyle

It is really lovely to hear you speak about your inner journey of moving from London to rural southern Sweden, miles from the grocery store, with an outhouse, etc. It really puts my own life into context. Two years ago I moved to a rural cabin with no running water at all, and an outhouse, no insulation except in the ceiling, but I do have electricity. I have very little land, but enough to have a vegetable garden. I do have a car and drive 45 minutes to get to a grocery store or hardware store or library. And you know what? I love it. I'm in my late 60s and I think I have always wanted to do this. And I think and outhouse is amazing. I love that i'm not wasting lots of potable water to flush away my poop! (I throw on a wee bit of peat moss after each deposit so there is no odor.) I do have very helpful neighbours and were are there for each other. I ask for help when I need it, and I am happy to provide help when they need it. So while no, your neighbours aren't responsible for your choices, there is something really special about being able to help each other. It's not about being totally independent, but sharing what we have with others: interdependence with a sense of self-reliance. You are becoming self-reliant, learning how to figure things out and get them done on your own, and that will stand you in good stead in the future. Enjoy this part of your life. Silence and solitude have rewards that many people today never get to experience. I am inspired by myself to a certain degree while watching and being inspired by you!.
I give you tons of credit to live how you're living. I personally could not do it at my age or with mobility issues. I did live without running water or an inside bathroom when I was a kid growing up, but when you're a kid, and that's all you know, it didn't matter. Now days, I want running water and an inside bathroom. I wouldn't want to shower outside except in the summer months. I would not feel comfortable sleeping out in the guest house away from the main house, just me because of things I've been through. Living out 8 miles from town wouldn't bother me if I had transportation. I would not be able to commute the way you do. It certainly keeps you in shape, heart & mind healthy. I would like to see you get a small truck so you'd have an easier time for getting materials/supplies. It was nice that you shared all your feeling of your life style.

I’ve often wondered how you “endure” many hardships and inconveniences and I now “get it”… still not a lifestyle I could live or to manage but kudos to you and all that you accomplish. This video was great. After a stroke 2010 I coldn't cope with the stressful life in a city. Therefor me and my wife moved to a little place almost as remote as your place. Our house is more modern but I don't think it matters. But I must say that the life close to nature give me a relief I never ever could get where there are a lot of things happening. I think my soul need to get space and relax for to get a healthy life. Nice that anyone else have the same kind of thoughts. Thank you for the video.❤❤❤
I hear you on the "don't really need a car" thing 100%. I'm the same, and will frequently turn down rides if I think it's a distance that I can walk. But may I point out one thing regarding accepting help from neighbours? When they offer, and you accept, that also means you've opened the door to them asking you for a favour at some point. It could be something as simple as water their plants when they go out of town, or help them out if they get hurt and need fire wood carried inside or something. The'd feel a lot less awkward about asking for help if you already established a relationship where you help each other out. That said, biking seems to work for you, so why not keep doing it.
I do admire your thirst for challenges and determination to live a life free of societal pressure. You are a very good narrator and story teller. And living in a high pressure urban environment such as London seems to have driven you to this lifestyle and I can understand directionally the dream you have for this lifestyle. Your physical accomplishments are many. But reliance on an internet world for social interaction, which we all do to an extent, misses out on the human to human interactions which nurture our inner souls. Your lifestyle is fine but you need a vehicle to get out and participate in in-person society to a small degree that enhances your comfort. Too much isolation from human contact can make a person odd in the long run. The best to you...

I'm not sure if Thoreau was correct on all or most these points. I like what he wrote and the way you live what he wrote. My life's dream was to live surrounded by trees and near a city. I have a half acre an hour from Paris. I am 68, so this is as close as I am going to get to my dream, but it seems okay. I don't like the French and I don't own a car, so in a way I am almost as isolated as you are. A third of my property is a stand of oak and pine trees. There are times I ask a neighbor to drive me somewhere where they are going anyway for work or shopping. I feel I am doing them a favor in that they are wasting less diesel fuel just for themselves. I also buy them expensive gifts and such. Auchan delivers to my door. Best of luck.
Dear Rosie, you really got me thinking here. I live on a island where the distances are too far for walking and with no bike paths but I don't feel good about taking the car all the time. Now I now why. You are amazing by doing this your own way and showing that it's much more fulfilling.
This is how my grandmother lived in Ireland in the 60s - the toilet was an earth closet at the end the garden (now something similar as a composting toilet is very fashionable!), drinking water was collected in buckets from a hand-crank pump in the street, you boiled water for a was and it was just a wash no one ever had a bath (outdoor showers were unheard of back then), waste water was collected in basins and thrown over the plants, coal fire heating for warmth (kitchen stove was on all the time), candles or oil lamps for lighting. Not as easy life however, it was what she was used to. I recognise hermit tendencies in myself so how you live doesn’t faze me and, in some ways, seems idyllic to me (took me a long time to realise there is nothing wrong with me - as per what my family kept suggesting! - I am just an introvert who prefers my own company) ☺️ I wondered if you could use a quad bike with a trailer in really bad weather to get into town? I also wonder if you’ll resent your visitors when the visitors cabin is ready to be used
I agree with so many of your expressions here. I write this from a fairly remote spot on the island of Puerto Rico. Getting groceries and going out to dinner is a whole day affair but I find joy in my days spent here on this mountain; improving our home, growing all the things, feeding chickens, pond fish, cats and a dogs. We live simply and sometimes I complain but the reality is that I am happy, very happy.

Growing up,my family went to spend time with my grandfather who lived in th upper peninsula of Michigan where we experienced what you're talking about. A water pump in the kitchen sink, kerosene lamps, outhouse or pot under the bed, and wood stove. They are some of my most treasured memories.
I relate to your story. And like you pointed out, we learn so much about ourselves. I did it for 7 years....and it changes me profoundly. I cherries those years. It might be a silly question, but do you know of any YT channel that gives a somewhat realistic picture of life in Denmark? I love Rosie's channel and I would be thrilled to see something similar from Denmark. The Danish people are fascinating to me. The very few times I had the opportunity to travel to Denmark, time was always way to short but I nevertheless got the strong feeling that the Danish have got it mostly right in how they organize their lives and society in general.

Rosie, this was simply amazing, thank you for spilling it all, it was brilliantly stated...I too am a hermit, though I have a truck, live in a huge city now, simply to be nearer my daughter, setting that stage for my next phase of life..oldish 73...but the memories of living alone, no toilet, no running water, frozen pipes, renovations, gardening and raising chickens are loved...having left the marriage of many years to have freedom and be aware of me and my true self, I make do and build fences to shelter the hermit within, life is good in spite of the corruption...I take solace in the bees and butterflies and gardening...you are an inspiration, do it all while you can, cuz 73 sneaks up, be prepared, I know you can...

Especially to those who are new to your channel it gives more context and cohesiveness, to know your background and journey to this alternative lifestyle and challenge you gave yourself. I'm sure you'll get alot of new subscribers thanks to this video! I'm in the capital (Stockholm) looking out at the droves of snow against the black night thinking I must be some sortof self-deprecating masochist living in this climate when it's +20 in Northern Italy and the Mimosa is blossoming! So I'm as inpressed as ever you manage to enjoy or even endure life involving trecking by foot for many miles through miserable weather to get some groceries all alone! You don't even have a dog to love on, to keep you company and snuggle with!? I couldn't manage that. Not now nor at your age. You're so brave and creative, and so straight forward about what you do. Your renovation work is really beautiful and impressive, and even more so as you've no prior experience with DIY! You should be so proud of yourself making every single thing from scratch and without help, a car or a proper workshop! That's a kind of fullfillment few get these days. But you should really consider adopting a husky or Scandinavian equivalent breed needing a home home, to keep you laughing and to bring on your hikes! It's important to not lose ones sense of humor and to be silly and laugh out loud, and to share an emotional bond in life. If you lose that entirely for too long it's been proven to have definate negative effects on health and ability to relate long term. It changes you in not so good ways. Incidentally, a husky would also be overjoyed to pull a sled or wagon of groceries home from town all winter long! Anyway, I know it's a little early yet, but Happy Easter!

I lived in Denver in a shed in a couples back yard for two weeks. I had to haul water every day for washing and drinking, had to get ice for a large cooler for my food (no refrigerator), water glass lid he heated for washing and there was a composting toilet in the shed. It did have heat and an air conditioner but was otherwise rustic by city standards. It was an Airbnb and very cheap but very private. The bed was comfy and it was very quiet there. Cozy, warm/cool as needed, dog out in the morning and evening for a bit but otherwise, no one bothered me! I liked it a lot!

I like your content. I (w) live alone in a dry cabin in the middle of Alaska for 11 years and like you it’s around 10 miles to the next shop. Believe me a car is not taking away from the experience of the lifestyle you choose. It just makes sure that you can do it longer than 3-4 years. But I get that this is not your forever home, just an adventure, like your hiking and traveling. So, it is temporary. In this case I admire that you don’t take the easy way out and embrace the challenge!!!

Some would say, it's just a phase in your life. Whether for a while or longer it doesn't matter, just live the moment. City way of living also has plenty of drawbacks. And, you left it for a reason. Probably, unhappy, no triggers, or the emptiness in the clutter. You shouldn't look back, keep forward on your uncertain path.
Such a thoughtful and insightful video Rosie. I am questioning similar things at the moment living in a converted garage/sleep out with no running water or a toilet. It's not where I thought I would be in my late 30's, but I'm making peace with it. I think living slightly differently really does make you appreciate all that we have, and that you can live a much simpler life to the one that is expected of you from a young age. Rosie! Walking 16 miles in any weather is challenging enough, but this, well this is downright daring. That must have been one hell of a sweet tooth. You need to stock up in advance of winter to assure you needn't be taking such journeys. I don't think I've walked 16 miles cumulatively in the last 23 years. I'm glad I chalked up before this one. I, like yourself, prefer being alone more times than not. I find much peace and wisdom in solitude and quietude. One can learn a lot about themselves in isolation.

I think that I have thought one thing that makes it easier for you is your expertise with graphic design etc (it is AMAZING). Do you think that puts you ahead a bit? You can calculate materials needed, have a computer program to map out your plans etc? I think you mostly succeed because of your desire to go for it AND you DO it!

It is amazing how you just get on with it all, on your own! I am 66 years young, and am on my own, with my dog, in a very rural part of Devon, England, and I only go out to walk my dog. But I can get things delivered, so am lucky there! I enjoy being on my own with my dog most of the time, but it would be good to have a human to talk to in the evenings I feel. However, I would rather be on my own with my dog, than with someone who I found difficult to live with, so I think it is better this way?! xxx

I just moved to a cottage in the north of Sweden. Life hit me pretty hard. I used to live in Miami being around street violence, guns, death, and I even used to eat $3 a day, 25 cents noodles, expired toast and canned campbell tomato soup. I survived the Boston Marathon Bombing which was a few feet away and I saw all the blood the people screaming and I was alone at 18. I also used to live in a room with no kitchen, trash bag as a window and bugs crawling on me at night. I ended up moving states (from LA to Miami) and ended up working a job where I had to literally hope I don't get shot or robbed while working overnight near one of the most dangerous areas. So I ended up takin boxing to protect myself and learned how to defend against bigger threats. Now I live in a cabin in the north of Sweden where I run an online business, I go down to a lake to breathe and heal my past and I post on TH-cam to help others who need it the most 💜

If a wild animal attacks you, there’s no one to help you. She’s walking 16 miles for groceries. Do you do that? She lives for weeks only having herself to talk to. Your lifestyle doesn’t come close to comparing.

I'm turning 68 this Saturday and I've lived alone for the past 16+ years since I lost my husband to cancer.
I had never lived alone ever before that. I was married at 17 and my husband and I began building our own home immediately after we married. He was in the building trades so he taught me everything about building our home. When we laid the block foundation he handed me a trowel and showed me what to do. Together we built our home one project at a time... adding on to it four times... always doing most of the work ourselves.
I moved away from that home 5 years ago into a brand new smaller home just my size, with my two cats and a small yard where I've made flower gardens. This Spring I'm attempting to put in a frog pond by myself (with the help of a 9 yr old neighbor boy who loves frogs).
I'm expecting my 16th grandchild in August... so life is full.
I tell you some of these details because I, too, have made conscious choices. I love spending time alone. I love all the beauty of God's magnificent creation. I love starting seedlings with my granddaughters and watching them sprout ( the seedlings and the children)! We take walks on a secret lane nearby where God brings out multitudes of meadow deer for me to feed. They come right to me, and almost eat from my hand. There is so much Joy in that moment especially when one of my grandkids is with me!
Your videos are so fun to watch. And you inspire us all more than you know.... even across the ocean here in NJ, USA! Thank you for this special video which brought out so much truth... I often say I wish we could go back to a time with no devices! The way things used to be when people actually talked to one another and cared for each other and helped one another.... and lived off the land... and shared what they produced with one another. Some are doing that now. You've made a good choice. I do hope it will include more neighbors being neighborly again. It goes both ways.

I lived at 3900 ft elevation. Waimea is home to many homesteads with five acre parcels of agricultural land. Rich fertile land for growing greens and many native speciality fruits and produce. The Big Island is comprised of 4000 sq miles and made from five volcanoes. Two active! Absolutely exquisite. Perhaps Rosing will visit one day for amazing some hiking!

When I found my current home on an island I was enormously happy to discover it had no drainage, a septic tank, a rainwater tank, outdoor bathroom, outdoor laundry, fruit trees, land for growing food and a shadehouse. It is difficult as a tenant to move toward self sufficient offgrid living. This is a stepping stone in the river of my dream. Keep cycling 😊

Before finishing watching the rest of the video, I just have to say that when you spoke of being unsanitary with your outhouse, there are generations before you that survived and thrived using them. My Grandmother was born in 1890 and lived until 1968 with outdoor potty. She lived 2 months short of 100 !!! So... lol !

Life experiences and meeting challenges does change us and, hopefully, they make us stronger. I was a 6 year old girl, middle child, growing up in Ohio in the 40s. We originally lived in town, but then rented a house in the country for $25 a month. It had no running water, a wood cook stove, a huge coal burning furnace in the middle of the living room, a crank telephone, and no heat upstairs where I slept. But, looking back on these times, I really had a great childhood and didn't really miss anything. We had a barn to play in with bales of straw that we would climb up and swing down into the piles of loose straw below using a rope attached to a pully. That was the best!! Rosie, you are not the 'normal" city person because you have traveled extensively and so in a way you already knew what you could tolerate as far as amenities. It is important to know that you live the way YOU want to live, there is no need for explanations or for us to understand you. Everyone is different and unique and you are living what I would call off the grid and that is absolutely 100% fine with us. It is enjoyable to see the way you live and it personally gives me a greater appreciation for what I have. You have created the life that you enjoy. That's all that matters.

I grew up back in the 50''s like that. We lived different places but we always came back to the little house cause it was home. We had a hand pump off the back porch and I know well how to prime it as it was my job to pump the water. We never worried about pipes freezing. I see you going to the toilet in house shoes and I can remember running to the toilet barefoot in the snow with my long nightgown on. Daddy trapped and hunted our meat and mama canned everything. It was all so different and it did depend always on the weather. I took baths in the round metal tub and we washed our clothes by hand. And thats how it went. We were as clean as anyone and didn't need a TV. Those were the happiest years. Laurie from Idaho

The fact that you talk to your devices, send your thoughts and life out into the world and receive comments and feedback is communicating with people but in a different way. You have the safety of knowing that if we don’t hear from you for a while that there may be something wrong. I’m sure you have that set up with your family. At 65, in 2018 I travelled around Asia backpacking solo. At times I was very much alone and learned how to enjoy me and my own company. I did send out videos on Facebook every day or two and when I hadn’t sent one out for a few days my friends would send me a message to make sure I was ok. It was a good safety net for me. It is really lovely to hear you speak about your inner journey of moving from London to rural southern Sweden, miles from the grocery store, with an outhouse, etc. It really puts my own life into context. Two years ago I moved to a rural cabin with no running water at all, and an outhouse, no insulation except in the ceiling, but I do have electricity. I have very little land, but enough to have a vegetable garden. I do have a car and drive 45 minutes to get to a grocery store or hardware store or library. And you know what? I love it. I'm in my late 60s and I think I have always wanted to do this. And I think and outhouse is amazing. I love that i'm not wasting lots of potable water to flush away my poop! (I throw on a wee bit of peat moss after each deposit so there is no odor.) I do have very helpful neighbours and were are there for each other. I ask for help when I need it, and I am happy to provide help when they need it. So while no, your neighbours aren't responsible for your choices, there is something really special about being able to help each other. It's not about being totally independent, but sharing what we have with others: interdependence with a sense of self-reliance. You are becoming self-reliant, learning how to figure things out and get them done on your own, and that will stand you in good stead in the future. Enjoy this part of your life. Silence and solitude have rewards that many people today never get to experience. I am inspired by myself to a certain degree while watching and being inspired by you!.
I give you tons of credit to live how you're living. I personally could not do it at my age or with mobility issues. I did live without running water or an inside bathroom when I was a kid growing up, but when you're a kid, and that's all you know, it didn't matter. Now days, I want running water and an inside bathroom. I wouldn't want to shower outside except in the summer months. I would not feel comfortable sleeping out in the guest house away from the main house, just me because of things I've been through. Living out 8 miles from town wouldn't bother me if I had transportation. I would not be able to commute the way you do. It certainly keeps you in shape, heart & mind healthy. I would like to see you get a small truck so you'd have an easier time for getting materials/supplies. It was nice that you shared all your feeling of your life style.

This video was great. After a stroke 2010 I coldn't cope with the stressful life in a city. Therefor me and my wife moved to a little place almost as remote as your place. Our house is more modern but I don't think it matters. But I must say that the life close to nature give me a relief I never ever could get where there are a lot of things happening. I hear you on the "don't really need a car" thing 100%. I'm the same, and will frequently turn down rides if I think it's a distance that I can walk. But may I point out one thing regarding accepting help from neighbours? When they offer, and you accept, that also means you've opened the door to them asking you for a favour at some point. It could be something as simple as water their plants when they go out of town, or help them out if they get hurt and need fire wood carried inside or something. The'd feel a lot less awkward about asking for help if you already established a relationship where you help each other out. That said, biking seems to work for you, so why not keep doing it.
I do admire your thirst for challenges and determination to live a life free of societal pressure. You are a very good narrator and story teller. And living in a high pressure urban environment such as London seems to have driven you to this lifestyle and I can understand directionally the dream you have for this lifestyle. Your physical accomplishments are many. But reliance on an internet world for social interaction, which we all do to an extent, misses out on the human to human interactions which nurture our inner souls. Your lifestyle is fine but you need a vehicle to get out and participate in in-person society to a small degree that enhances your comfort. Too much isolation from human contact can make a person odd in the long run. The best to you...

I know I don't, and I would never think I have the right or knowledge to judge other people that way. Let everybody decide for themselves what's best for them.
@@itssoaztek4592 you are right, it is a huge generalisation, I lived in London for 35 years where most people are pretty removed from nature. I now live quite differently. Yes, everyone must find their own way of living. I get carried away and make sweeping statements 🙏

I'm not sure if Thoreau was correct on all or most these points. I like what he wrote and the way you live what he wrote. My life's dream was to live surrounded by trees and near a city. I have a half acre an hour from Paris. I am 68, so this is as close as I am going to get to my dream, but it seems okay. I don't like the French and I don't own a car, so in a way I am almost as isolated as you are. A third of my property is a stand of oak and pine trees. There are times I ask a neighbor to drive me somewhere where they are going anyway for work or shopping. I feel I am doing them a favor in that they are wasting less diesel fuel just for themselves. I also buy them expensive gifts and such. Auchan delivers to my door. Best of luck.
Dear Rosie, you really got me thinking here. I live on a island where the distances are too far for walking and with no bike paths but I don't feel good about taking the car all the time. Now I now why. You are amazing by doing this your own way and showing that it's much more fulfilling.
This is how my grandmother lived in Ireland in the 60s - the toilet was an earth closet at the end the garden (now something similar as a composting toilet is very fashionable!), drinking water was collected in buckets from a hand-crank pump in the street, you boiled water for a was and it was just a wash no one ever had a bath (outdoor showers were unheard of back then), waste water was collected in basins and thrown over the plants, coal fire heating for warmth (kitchen stove was on all the time), candles or oil lamps for lighting. Not as easy life however, it was what she was used to.
I recognise hermit tendencies in myself so how you live doesn’t faze me and, in some ways, seems idyllic to me (took me a long time to realise there is nothing wrong with me - as per what my family kept suggesting! - I am just an introvert who prefers my own company) ☺️
I wondered if you could use a quad bike with a trailer in really bad weather to get into town?
I also wonder if you’ll resent your visitors when the visitors cabin is ready to be used
I agree with so many of your expressions here. I write this from a fairly remote spot on the island of Puerto Rico. Getting groceries and going out to dinner is a whole day affair but I find joy in my days spent here on this mountain; improving our home, growing all the things, feeding chickens, pond fish, cats and a dogs. We live simply and sometimes I complain but the reality is that I am happy, very happy.
Hi Rosie, this was one of my favorite videos of yours, because you were being so honest and sharing home truths. This video made me admire you and love you even more. You are a true inspiration, tackling every obstacle with calm and grace, doing whatever it takes to reach your goals. You may be far away from other human beings physically, but you have all of us following along with your life and truly thinking of you as a friend. Growing up,my family went to spend time with my grandfather who lived in th upper peninsula of Michigan where we experienced what you're talking about. A water pump in the kitchen sink, kerosene lamps, outhouse or pot under the bed, and wood stove. They are some of my most treasured memories.

I relate to your story. And like you pointed out, we learn so much about ourselves. I did it for 7 years....and it changes me profoundly. I cherries those years. Now I have running water and flushing toilet....but I dont take it for granded. My values are simple and that is what makes me more free. Lots of love from Denmark. ❤🇩🇰
It might be a silly question, but do you know of any YT channel that gives a somewhat realistic picture of life in Denmark? I love Rosie's channel and I would be thrilled to see something similar from Denmark. The Danish people are fascinating to me. The very few times I had the opportunity to travel to Denmark, time was always way to short but I nevertheless got the strong feeling that the Danish have got it mostly right in how they organize their lives and society in general.

That is, I am looking for somebody like Rosie who is telling an honest story about his or her life. Other than that the setting does not matter (can be city, countryside, tiny house, big house, everything goes as long as it is in Denmark 🙂Also, English would be easiest but Danish language is fine too. I don't speak Danish, but trying to learn a little bit would be fun too)

Rosie, this was simply amazing, thank you for spilling it all, it was brilliantly stated...I too am a hermit, though I have a truck, live in a huge city now, simply to be nearer my daughter, setting that stage for my next phase of life..oldish 73...but the memories of living alone, no toilet, no running water, frozen pipes, renovations, gardening and raising chickens are loved...having left the marriage of many years to have freedom and be aware of me and my true self, I make do and build fences to shelter the hermit within, life is good in spite of the corruption...I take solace in the bees and butterflies and gardening...you are an inspiration, do it all while you can, cuz 73 sneaks up, be prepared, I know you can...

I've always thought I might be a hermit, and, these days I always prefer to travel alone. The better I get to know myself, the more I realise I'm not afraid of being alone, no matter where I am in the world. I am a happy hermit. Iam 60 years now and i grew up at a tiny Farm in Germany with no running Water,no Toilet in the house and a lot of work every day, but i must say i felt more healthy and more happy than in my todays modern life with all the technology and must do`s and haves, You doing a great job at your renovation and filming it to share with us. This was one of your best videos! Especially to those who are new to your channel it gives more context and cohesiveness, to know your background and journey to this alternative lifestyle and challenge you gave yourself. I'm sure you'll get alot of new subscribers thanks to this video! I'm in the capital (Stockholm) looking out at the droves of snow against the black night thinking I must be some sortof self-deprecating masochist living in this climate when it's +20 in Northern Italy and the Mimosa is blossoming! So I'm as inpressed as ever you manage to enjoy or even endure life involving trecking by foot for many miles through miserable weather to get some groceries all alone! You don't even have a dog to love on, to keep you company and snuggle with!?
I couldn't manage that. Not now nor at your age. You're so brave and creative, and so straight forward about what you do. Your renovation work is really beautiful and impressive, and even more so as you've no prior experience with DIY! You should be so proud of yourself making every single thing from scratch and without help, a car or a proper workshop! That's a kind of fullfillment few get these days. But you should really consider adopting a husky or Scandinavian equivalent breed needing a home home, to keep you laughing and to bring on your hikes! It's important to not lose ones sense of humor and to be silly and laugh out loud, and to share an emotional bond in life. If you lose that entirely for too long it's been proven to have definate negative effects on health and ability to relate long term. It changes you in not so good ways.
Incidentally, a husky would also be overjoyed to pull a sled or wagon of groceries home from town all winter long!

I lived in Denver in a shed in a couples back yard for two weeks. I had to haul water every day for washing and drinking, had to get ice for a large cooler for my food (no refrigerator), water glass lid he heated for washing and there was a composting toilet in the shed.
It did have heat and an air conditioner but was otherwise rustic by city standards.
It was an Airbnb and very cheap but very private.
The bed was comfy and it was very quiet there. Cozy, warm/cool as needed, dog out in the morning and evening for a bit but otherwise, no one bothered me!
I liked it a lot!
There is something about creative pursuits that fulfill the soul.

I like your content. I (w) live alone in a dry cabin in the middle of Alaska for 11 years and like you it’s around 10 miles to the next shop.
Believe me a car is not taking away from the experience of the lifestyle you choose.
It just makes sure that you can do it longer than 3-4 years.
But I get that this is not your forever home, just an adventure, like your hiking and traveling. So, it is temporary.
In this case I admire that you don’t take the easy way out and embrace the challenge!!!
Rosie you make me believe in me…..I watch you accomplish so much and take responsibility for yourself not depending on anyone. I watch you and I tell myself I can do whatever I need to do on my own….I am capable….I Don’t need to wait on others to get things done….thank you so much for that😊
Loved this episode! I absolutely agree that it's the inefficient activities that feel the most meaningful and joyful and productive - I have found this to be very true and I try to spend more of my time doing those things.
Its Okej Rosie ! Im living almost the same. Nothing wrong living close to nature. Nature is our best friend. It listen to our hearts, what we need and whats most important. 👍🌞👍
Some would say, it's just a phase in your life. Whether for a while or longer it doesn't matter, just live the moment. City way of living also has plenty of drawbacks. And, you left it for a reason. Probably, unhappy, no triggers, or the emptiness in the clutter. You shouldn't look back, keep forward on your uncertain path.

Such a thoughtful and insightful video Rosie. I am questioning similar things at the moment living in a converted garage/sleep out with no running water or a toilet. It's not where I thought I would be in my late 30's, but I'm making peace with it. I think living slightly differently really does make you appreciate all that we have, and that you can live a much simpler life to the one that is expected of you from a young age. Thank you for challenging the norms that society puts on us and for being such an inspiration. I always feel more at peace after watching your videos.

Rosie! Walking 16 miles in any weather is challenging enough, but this, well this is downright daring. That must have been one hell of a sweet tooth. You need to stock up in advance of winter to assure you needn't be taking such journeys. I don't think I've walked 16 miles cumulatively in the last 23 years. I'm glad I chalked up before this one. I, like yourself, prefer being alone more times than not. I find much peace and wisdom in solitude and quietude. One can learn a lot about themselves in isolation.
Although I watch your videos out of sequence, I find that each one adds to my admiration of what you are doing. This video gave a full measure of that. Thank you.

I think that I have thought one thing that makes it easier for you is your expertise with graphic design etc (it is AMAZING). Do you think that puts you ahead a bit? You can calculate materials needed, have a computer program to map out your plans etc?
I think you mostly succeed because of your desire to go for it AND you DO it!
Oh Rosie. In the summer it looks like the most idilic, tranquil place on earth to live but in the winter it looks the most hostile and uninviting place. You have such perseverance a lot of people wouldn't have including myself! Bless you ❣️

It is amazing how you just get on with it all, on your own! I am 66 years young, and am on my own, with my dog, in a very rural part of Devon, England, and I only go out to walk my dog. But I can get things delivered, so am lucky there! I enjoy being on my own with my dog most of the time, but it would be good to have a human to talk to in the evenings I feel. However, I would rather be on my own with my dog, than with someone who I found difficult to live with, so I think it is better this way?! xxx

Inspirational video today. I leave in Sweden. Many people have sommarstuga, a smaller summerhouse off grid, where they spend summer holidays. Many of these houses are just like yours, toilette, running water, heat etc.I suppose there is a need for the simplicity now and then. I really enjoyed your vlog today. People do what they have to do to live…and do so as needed and as conveniently as possible ….using with what they have to work with. 🤷🏼♀️ You are adapting well to your environment. Since I moved more rurally I don’t think I could ever contentedly live in the close confines of the City again. After spreading my Wings and opening my senses they don’t care to be retrained any longer 😊 Yes I feel so close to nature and am acutely aware of the weather and change of Seasons…and the movement and direction of the sun and even the Moon…. I can do without the coffee shops and stores at hand, in general….living alone enhances me. In fact I enjoy my alone time. I have a sincere appreciation for all things which I never thought twice about before.

A toilet without water is the future that awaits. Water is actually too expensive to use for that.
