If Luke had an issue with FM, he simply could have just ignored their tent and or products period. Like other products he has tested with no personal interest, many other paid TH-cam channels will say whatever they want about a product as long as it is positive, or else they don't get their kick-back. Luke takes NO kickbacks he has a worldwide reputation of telling it like it is with no reward. As the majority of replies clearly show, he did them wrong with this review, paying members as well as others. And none of it proved my expectation and the result wrong, when it comes to this brand. I've been a traveling nature photographer and overlander for over 36 years, not just a paid member to a fanclub. I know what works and what doesn't
I don't think he has a bias against them, he just doesn't know what he's doing so he screws things up frequently and then faults the product for it, like that time he faulted the Crown2 for having bad side pockets because if you put your trekking poles in there (Who does that?!) the unprotected and very sharp tungsten carbide tips will eventually cut through them. And a lot of times if he doesn't like something for whatever reason he'll pick it apart and fault it for every little imperfection, even if he gave the same imperfections a pass or said they weren't important on another brand of the same type of gear, even if those imperfections exist only in his mind because he doesn't know how a piece of gear works before he "tests" it.

You're not wrong, the guy is a hack, but the main reason this one is sagging so bad isn't because he didn't guy it out. It's because the fly is too big. Look at the bottom of it before and after it rained. He's already got the corners pulled down as tight as they'll go and the fly is still loose. The real problem here is that the wannabe gear guru never picked up on this glaring flaw before or after the... lol... test and thought the only thing that might leak was a part that didn't leak at all - the vents.
Hi Luke, I am your fan for many years but this time, to be honest, I think you really have to give the tent second chance with the guy lines properly staked out.
Hey Luke here is a dehydrated food hack for you. Once the food is hot, instead of eating from the top of the bag which is awkward. Close the top, turn the bag sideways and open up the side all the way with your knife and then it is a nice shallow bag to eat from.
Good if there's a trash can around, but not so much if you have to pack it out. One of the advantages of those bags is that you can keep all the gunk sealed in where the smell is less likely to attract rodents and bear, especially after days on the trail. I guess you could wash them out if you can spare the water, but even then.... Well, Madison Clydesdale has a video of a trip where some rodents came in the night and chewed through the shoulder strap of her backpack and the wrist strap of a trekking pole, probably because they were salty from sweat, and there's countless stories of people waking to find that while they were sleeping a mouse chewed right through their tents and then through their dry bags to get at a food wrapper, so they're picking up on even the most miniscule scents.
I think these guys are right. I don't see what we learn by testing a rain fly that isn't guyed out properly. It absolutely impacts its performance. What is your thinking in not doing this?

Probably not. The tent is made from silnylon. That material tends to sag and has to be retensioned after some time, multiple times when wet. But: I agree that he should have shown us the tent with guy lines! The test feels incomplete without!
@@alexandergutfeldt1144 It's not silnylon and FM doesn't claim that it is. It's regular ol' PU coated nylon with a silicon DWR treatment at best. Hi Luke if you don’t mind, let your son Luke know that someone watched 9 year old episode where he was Bravo 2 and you filmed him dancing!!!👍🏿❤️ it was awesome!! S&H my brother be well. 👍🏿👍🏿❤️❤️💯💯. From Washington state!!
Ive noticed a few reviews that the tent is setup properly and it gets bad reviews. Oddly it is new and surplus. Also the new trangia set that got rave reviews has plastic coated handles you hated before on another item from them. This tent has similar vents as other tents that are fine have, so not sure why it was mentioned. Love the channel, just have noticed irregularities lately.
Luke you're not kidding, that Thermarest Xtherm is worth every penny dude lol. Most comfortable pad I ever slept on, and conveniently I have the Flex Tail air pump!
I know nothing about camping -- my observation is more -- well, simple. are your videos shorter now or maybe I am just hitting shorter videos than I was last year? I was getting to enjoy the longer format too much I guess -- more like living vicariously with your camping experiences rather than these more short form evaluations of particular equipment. This is your channel and I am not your target audience. Will still keep watching -- your presentations are just so enjoyable.
Some are saying guying out wouldn't make a difference. I say conjecture is not a definitive result. Luke is definitely better than this. Just a bad day in the office and I still admire his work 👍
People complaining about the guylines have no idea what they are talking about. They are attached in specific areas to support the structure of the tent, not the fabric! Sagging is just the reality of nylon.
He didn't set it up as intended, so we'll never know. And BTW hero, I am 60yo and have camped all over Australia, in every environment and have sheltered in everything from a stick lean to, to a fully decked out trailer as well as everything in between. I reckon I know a fair bit and I think this was a sh*t review, go away smart*ss
It's actually you that doesn't know what you're talking about. The guy lines are attached to the fly. Pulling tension on them pulls tension on the fly, which increases wind resistance, but also keep the fly tight. If the fly is designed such that it physically attaches to the poles then it pulls on the structure of the tent as well, spreading the poles apart and further increasing tension on the fly. Yes, nylon sags. That's why it's so important to guy it out. Furthermore, if you did know what you were talking about you'd know the main reason why this one is sagging so badly, which is not because he didn't guy it out, and you'd be pointing it out rather than just saying "Hurr durr! Nylon sags. Nothing to see here." You don't know why, though, and neither does Luke.
🤷🏻♂️Everyone complaining about the pitch …. It was simply a leak test not how is it going to hold up in windy conditions, “ water proof test” doesn’t not matter if the guy lines are out , the material does sag when wet , but agin it’s was a leak proof test and it passed , test was more than fair.
Yes, and the fly sagging onto the inner is the single best way to make it leak. Nylon absorbs water, as does the type of polyurethane waterproofing that 99.9% is on this tent, and putting another dry piece of material in contact with it literally pulls the water through and into the tent. It's called wicking and the way you prevent it is by guying it out so it can be adjusted after it gets wet and the material expands. It didn't leak because it's brand new but give it a few months to age and for the DWR coating to start wearing off and it's going to run like a faucet. Guying out a nylon tent in the rain is absolutely essential to preventing leaks. Luke didn't do it because he's a hack and only makes videos for novice backpackers to stroke his unearned ego. Probably also because he's simply going to return this tent when he's done BSing around with it and wants to keep it looking as unused as possible.
I mean he sets review up to fail you can always tell if it’s going to be positive or negative I will always say take what he says with a grain of salt do your own research
I cannot see how staking out would solve the sagging. The staking points are not even in the right place to lift it off the inner wall. I think Luke is right, folks!
Luke I have always liked your channel but you are just pumping out dozens of these reviews for the hits, that is easy to see. My opinion is that you are not setting tents up properly, including guy ropes and correctly secured tent pegs etc. Is because you are up all night doing 3 or 4 of these at a time, tired AF and rushing to do as many as possible. You have said many times, that you are your own man and you don't care what anyone thinks, well, maybe you need to rethink that attitude. You would, and do, have a negative view of companies that don't heed the consumers (or your) opinions. Something to think about?
At 9:20 you say “you need a design that pulls the outer away from inner” the tent had a dozen guy out points that would have helped but you didn’t use them…
This guy is a fraud! He pumps out endless videos that offer absolutely nothing in content. I've never seen such a little guy so condescending and thinks he knows it all.
I agreed with everyone else who said it wasn't a fair test. You never bother to anchor out any of the guys but commented on the sagging fly? Even after your lame setup and 12 hours of rain the tent didn't leak but you gave it a negative review anyway. You didn't even attempt to sleep in it overnight. Why not? Afraid of getting wet? You're losing my interest in your "adventures" and credibility with "tests" like these. Most of what I see you doing lately is driving to a site, car camping with more food and gear for a family of 4 and saying how nasty it is outside without actually getting outside while you're safely tucked away in a plush 4 person tent or your fancy Toyota pickup or 4Runner. It's getting pretty lame, man. Time to step up your game.
He doesn't sleep in them because he sits under a tarp near his car all night while he tests 2,3 or 4 tents at a time. Totally agree with your comment though 😉
I’ve followed his chancel for a long time and I’m starting to feel the same , he’s not a survival camper , doesn’t even make a campfire 9 times out of 10 , brings every luxury item known to man
@@thearchetype4782 I understand what you are saying as it all has become a bit same same, but to be fair, it is called "the outdoor gear REVIEW" which is the primary focus of his channel. He takes all the gear with him coz he tests stuff over time then does reviews on it all. He has never claimed be a survivalist channel.
I typically set up my tents without using the guy lines. I tend to stake those out only if I'm thinking higher winds may be a factor. I've ridden out some prodigious rainfalls in mt SilNylon Big Agnes freestanding tent with only the bare minimum regular stakeout points set and had good results. Being SilNylon, my tarp did sag somewhat, but it never sagged like what I saw in this video. That being said, different tents have different needs. I think that seeing how the tent handled the weather in the minimalist stake out configuration is important. I would like to see another test in similar conditions with any adjustments made due to lessons learned and also with the guy lines staked out. A comparison of the two setups would be truly useful data. While I don't really have a favorable inclination toward that tent at this time, I have to say that the fact that it didn't leak at all is a BIG plus in its favor. Interior condensation can make things a misty misery in heavy rain, but I think this tent deserves a second look.
Sagging? maybe if you put the tent up correctly and not set it up to fail it wouldn't have sagged. Of course setting the guy lines would prevent sagging ffs.
It would've helped, but in this case wouldn't have prevented it. This tent is defective. The fly is too long. You can see at the beginning of the video that he's already got it drawn down as far as it'll go and the fly is still loose. Even after it rained all he had to say was "Maybe guying it out would've helped", but nothing about what was going on at the corners before or after it rained on it. He never even tried to adjust the sag out of it or bothered to set it up so he could, which is rule #1 for nylon tents in the rain, because he's an amateur.
Luke: " OK honey, the tent is set up and I will check it in the morning"... Wife: "Luke, its midnight, come to bed"... Luke: "That is not permissible, the checking of the tent must begin promptly at sun up"..."I must be ready"...."I will be ready".... Wife: (chuckles), ""that's my gear guy"".

Why didnt you guy the tent out correctly 😂
Ive noticed a few reviews that the tent is setup properly and it gets bad reviews. Oddly it is new and surplus. Also the new trangia set that got rave reviews has plastic coated handles you hated before on another item from them. This tent has similar vents as other tents that are fine have, so not sure why it was mentioned. Love the channel, just have noticed irregularities lately.
awesome
What’s the best bang for buck lightweight one person backpacking tent?
My friend have a 3f lanshan pro, i think its not bad
Notch
@Danielxperez14 personally I'm in love with the tarptent diplole 1, it's a little more expensive than other options but, it really is amazing!
Happy New Year! Do you ever use a sleeping bag liner? I don't recall seeing one in any of your videos.
Luke you're not kidding, that Thermarest Xtherm is worth every penny dude lol. Most comfortable pad I ever slept on, and conveniently I have the Flex Tail air pump!
You've Noticed How He Replies, Have You Not?
You should have used all the guides they designed this tent to be used a certain way
Happy new year Luke 🎉
Well, that was a surprise . Really thought it was gonna leak as well.
Luke when will you be testing the nature hike tent ?
Some are saying guying out wouldn't make a difference. I say conjecture is not a definitive result. Luke is definitely better than this. Just a bad day in the office and I still admire his work 👍
Review the lightheart firefly
Sounded so sure the tent would leak but when it didnt couldnt admit you were wrong
why don't you setup the tent completely, including the guylines? It might make some difference.
@@Hillbilly973 The guylines are for supporting the pole structure in heavy wind. Now you actually know a bit.
@@alexk1486 finally someone talking sense in the comments!
That’s how my Northface domey 3 looked after a heavy night of rain but it didn’t leak a drop
Jinx from …. Not a fair test England
Another vote w/the other comments…..not a valid test…the tent needs to be guyed out properly. Please redo.
Luke stay true to your honor as you always do. These trolls are truly miserable people
Trolls?? Anyone who disagrees is a troll?? Most of the negative feedback has been from Luke fans! Go away idi*ot!
Cheers matey I appreciate that as I said i felt Luke set up for fail its a bit rich overall.
Beans and sausages.
Gee you would think the manufacturer would do those tests before they mass produce them🤔
As soon as i saw the first image of it not staked out i gave up on this one
for over 200 bucks I would just go with the Teton.
odd....every other test has the lines staked out
should i say what everyone saw & said 🤔?
A B/S test Luke - - And? It didn't leak.
He never sets up review to fail if you do it right it won’t leak
I mean he sets review up to fail you can always tell if it’s going to be positive or negative I will always say take what he says with a grain of salt do your own research
He actually wanted it to leak
Credibility is questionable!
Also, no video needs almost 90 seconds of outro...
So everyone always uses all their tie outs every time they set up? No but if you know it’s gonna storm you certainly tie it out fully.
I wonder how much you got screwed out of commissions by that 'Honey" rip off scam! You have such an important and great channel!
I cannot see how staking out would solve the sagging. The staking points are not even in the right place to lift it off the inner wall.
I think Luke is right, folks!
@user-jn8ul4on5j i agree! They're for supporting the poles from wind
When you test a tent, do it the right way, use the sidelines, i would say.
I'm not an expert, but judging from comments I'm guessing you should have staked it out.
You HAVE to re-do the test
At 9:20 you say “you need a design that pulls the outer away from inner” the tent had a dozen guy out points that would have helped but you didn’t use them…
Ya know at a certain point that tent becomes a water bed.i think u have arrived.lol
FireMaple: "Hot and Sweet!
Luke: "Bitter Cold!"
How about an app that takes my zip code, spending limits and products needed?
Finding why, where, what and why???
Lol
🐺
I'm looking for a one room tent that will connect to my truck with a cap Chevy Silverado something that will last more then a minute so many out there
No die lines or pinned in .
This guy is a fraud! He pumps out endless videos that offer absolutely nothing in content. I've never seen such a little guy so condescending and thinks he knows it all.
Address the comments bro. We trust you.
The awning hangs like a deflated balloon. Bad pattern.
Guy lines dude....
All we see in this video is why guy lines are important...
Not a fair test guide ropes should be out need to do another video with it pegged out properly I love your vids not being a critic
Surprised with all the rhetoric about this “review “ he hasn’t come out with a video regarding this.
Sagging? maybe if you put the tent up correctly and not set it up to fail it wouldn't have sagged.
You forgot the “honey I think you should tie out those guy lines “
