    #STSNation,
Welcome to another episode of Surviving The Survivor, the podcast that brings you the #BestGuests in all of True Crime…
Back in June, a judge laid out a plan for Bryan Kohberger, the man suspected of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students in 2022, to stand trial starting in June 2025.
The Latah County Court confirmed to NBC News the trial was scheduled to start on June 2, 2025.
During a hearing on Thursday, June 27, Latah County District Judge John C. Judge said he expected the trial to take around three months, including sentencing if Kohberger was convicted.
    #BestGuests:
Two-time Idaho reporter of the year Kevin Fixler is an investigative reporter with the Idaho Statesman. He earned this distinction, in large part because of his incomparable work on the Moscow murders. He’s been following the gruesome story from the very beginning, and even traveled to Kohberger’s hometown in Pennsylvania.
Howard Blum is an American author and journalist. Formerly a reporter for The Village Voice and The New York Times, Blum is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and the author of several non-fiction books, including the New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner American Lightning.
His most recent book “When the Night Comes Falling” takes an in-depth look at the Idaho 4 murders.
J Reuben Appelman’s latest book, While Idaho Slept, tells the horrific story of the University of Idaho murders that gripped the world's attention from Moscow, Idaho in November of 2022.

    J. Reuben Appelman’s true-crime crime memoir, The Kill Jar, was published by Gallery/Simon & Schuster (2018) and was among the first of the new true-crime memoir genre. Published in all formats, The Kill Jar inspired the popular Hulu docuseries, “Children of the Snow” (2020), with Appelman serving as on-camera investigator and Executive Producer. The TV Series based on Appelman’s book has streamed tens of millions of times in America and abroad, and The Kill Jar was noted as among the best true-crime books of the year by The New York Times Book Review, Elle, Oxygen, Bustle, Crime Reads, and the USA Today network of newspapers.

Of course it *could* but with today's social media landscape it won't make any more difference than anything else. The court system and judges should be required to be more diligent in educating juries on the necessity, purpose and other essential reasons why only evidence entered into the actual trial is to be evaluated for a verdict. Yet I see no evidence that this is happening. There is absolutely no getting around widespread misinformation and it's truly a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in. A very good example is the ridiculous conspiracy theories that have not only tainted the K. Read case but ruined the lives of innocent people in the course of their long duration. It is an excellent question and I too have wondered about this. What if a person really truly is home alone? What then? However, I asked ChatGPT3 and got some very good answers. It seems that it is only when the defendant chooses to use Alibi as their defense that they must come up with more details so that the prosecution can investigate the alibi details further. It said much more: a page's worth but I can't fit it here. However, I did understand it after studying it. ChatGPT3 is free and that is what I used. Hope this helps. I think Blum is right to point out that BK could be not innocent but not proven guilty. I think it is silly to think that BK has been held in jail all this time without a reasonable suspicion of his involvement in this crime. Also, as far as a targeted attack goes, something in this strikes me as being true. Maddie was not as brutally attacked as the others. Her death wasnt so much personal as much as being a solution. He needed to eliminate her. The others threatened him and defended himself.

I would think Howard would be a little more educated on the legal process. IGG is the equivalent of a lie detector test and is inadmissible in court. It was not used to procure any warrant or anything else that would be presented in court. Even if they did use nefarious methods it would have nothing to do with BK. It would not be his rights violated so nothing is going to be tossed in conjunction. If a random person left BKs name on the tip line then you built a case of solid evidence, who would care how the tipster got the information? Nobody. The defense is just laying smoke screens.

Just ordered all 3 books. Mr. Appelman’s arrived first & read through her in 3 hours. Very curious for the other 2 that arrive tomorrow. I’m 43 & lived in LA for 18 years in the H hills & grew up in Nashville where I currently reside. Beyond “Unsolved Mysteries” as a child, I’d never really been exposed to true crime. This case jarred me to my core & I’m going nuts w this one. I’m sure it’s all gonna wash out but I learned some things from Mr. Appleman’s book I’d never heard. Including the kid in the footage (Hunter,) & being on the phone for the 911 call? Srry but still super sketch as he was always around. There’s def so much that will b peeled away & understood but this one gets me & still breaks my heart. Keddie Cabin was before my time but same level of how & why? Also, the “unspecified parties on the 911 call I’d never realized. Amazed nothing has been leaked. & Mr. Appelman, while I did/do have mixed emotions about the book, it was beautifully written & do conclude that so much more good was done in bringing their story home to all of us. The chapter w the “crying noises,” still made my stomach turn & broke my heart again for those last echoed moments in cheap hallways falling on quitened ears. Enjoyed the discussion. Look forward to Mr. Blum & Mr. Fixler’s tomorrow. Godspeed!

Have to say, just the way Blum laughed when someone early after the introductions said in chat, "I really loved Blum's book" or something to that effect, he responded, "Good, we can end it (this session) here." Of course he was merely making light of the moment and being appreciative for the comment but it struck me as disrespectful to the families of the kids who died. It was kinda like seeing anybody laughing during a murder trial over an inappropriate comment. The story isn't about the success or failure of Blum's book, it is about solving the murder of 4 college students.

    • @juliebraden

exactly. Him saying they can end is so pathetic. It is a tick a lot of people do on podcasts wen receiving a compliment on their work. Like stop the presses, I'm getting wat I want, praise & accolades; that's all that matters here-- nothing else to see. This is a reason a person shud not be able to capitalize on tragedy by writing a book unless it is their personal story & done for cathartic reasons. @ least not until after trial if they find a suspect w/in a couple of years.

Females are known to live up to a month until they get rid of their 200 eggs they can lay in their lifetime. "Joel" is out there looking for his COE. I don't think his off-springs will make their way to Florida, but a 3rd generation of "Joel" will hopefully hibernate in Mexico over the Winter and if the winds blow that offspring East next March, you stand a good chance a 2rd generation of that offspring will be in South Florida. So, I think the earliest a relative of "Joel" can be in South Florida would be about a year from now in time for another birthday in July.

I really do not think Steve Goncalves is ' jealous' of Blum's book & the profit he made off of it. I think Steve Goncalves is likely furious that some random author is profitting off of his daughter's & her friends' brutal murders.
The family is still in initial stages of grieving. They won't truly even start to move thru their shock, loss & grief until a trial is completed imo. The publishing of a book covering their personal tragedy is just so insulting & only most likely enhances their trauma they r dealing w/.
It is sad that we cannot respect victim's families & as a society protect them & try to ease their burden. Instead people like Blum & Appelman r allowed to capitalize on this horrific event.
I think Appelman's point about, "Wen shud we report on war?" 2days in, 4mos in, or 2 yrs after is completely misguided. This horrific tragedy is not comparable to covering a war other than the the bloodshed that both hav in common.
Edit: Appelman does seem to hav some insights & compassion wen he states, people r just trying to make sense of fthis situation. Yet I still think it is somewat callous to work under a deadline of submission. He cud hav investigated & wrote about this horrific tragedy, for his own purposes of understanding(no one was preventing him from the writing process- mayb prople wud hav discouraged the publishing process?) & chose to publish later if it weren't for some commercial success drive & truly was a drive for comprehension of a heinous event.
