I don't use an MS account to log into my Windows PCs but I hate using Apple devices. They require an Apple account to use a Mac AppleTV, iPhone and/or iPad, but no one seems to complain about that. Do you have an Apple device?

I do not need a Microsoft on Windows 10 or Windows 11. I prefer local account like in Windows XP.

Pro: Able to play Minecraft, which should be detached from the account anyways.

Microsoft still offers a non-subscription stand-alone version of Office suite called Office 2024. It's the newest version of the Office suite upgraded from Office 2021

Funny thing is I've had a MS account for years for work, I just refuse to link it or create another one for use with my personal PC's.

I use a Microsoft account mostly for the Sync bit, And for years they made it annoying not to have one. I use a pin and have a separate profile so other family members can use my laptop and not have access to my profile or install without my permission. But I will use Rufus when I am forced to 24H2 to disable BitLocker and Recall.

TLDR: The answer SHOULD BE NO. Just NO. You don't NEED a Microsoft account linked to your OS. USE A LOCAL ACCOUNT and F Microsoft.

Trading security for convenience, that's what having a Microsoft account is. I cannot think of anything worse than choosing to store your personal data on a Microsoft server somewhere via One Drive. I wouldn't be quite so critical if it weren't the fact this is Microsoft, who seem to continue to find more ways to harvest data and telemetry from you.
I'd rather take personal responsibility for my data, settings etc. Of course, Microsoft is trying to take that choice away from you and their not doing it for your benefit. Why would they invest in the systems and infrastructure to store massive amounts of user data if it didn't work out better for them than you.
Sorry Microsoft, I lost trust in you years ago.

I believe there will be more folks opting for local storage. As for the M$ store, I have not used it in over a year.
My cloud is an external drive covered with cotton balls. Looks like a cloud to me 😅😅😅😅.

I had a Microsoft account before I needed to sign into my PC with it. I had a Hotmail email account and they told me they were abandoning Hotmail and moving to Outlook, so I did. When I built my PC I started with Windows 7 Pro and got an OEM key bundled with it. Because I had a Microsoft account, I didn't need to pay when I upgraded to 10 and migrated to a newer PC. In the time I've been a PC user I've only had to pay for a Microsoft license once. If I'd had a local account I would have had to pay for an OEM key every time.
I'll probably have to pay to go beyond the 90 days if I go for 24H2 LTSC and there's unlikely to be an OEM key for that. Regarding the privacy, you've already shown us how to stop much of our data being sent back to them so I'll be keeping my Microsoft account.

the only product I want to use is the OS, so I guess I won't have to have a MS account, great. Did MS finally come to their senses on this or what brought this on.

There are a few things that bother me about Microsoft, it's greed is over the top, the one drive keeps taking all of my photos, even small photos and fill my drive up, I am really upset over the spying and screen shots they are taking is a bit much, I am going to switch to Mint I'm saving my files and I will go to that OPS by Friday

Activation is easier when you build a new PC. Yes theirs are way more cons. You know, bitlocker and Total Recall (at least it should be nicknamed).

I've had a MS account since XP days. I had one because of Games For Windows Live or the ominus GFWL that does not exist anymore. Yep one of Microsofts smooth moves. Because of that, I lost a library of games. So, who the hell thinks that you should trust them with data. Always, and I mean always make a unencrypted backup of your data. meaning Music, Pictures, Documents, and Movies you may have. Also any emulators for arcade and console games. Remember, if things get too hairy with Windows 11, their is Windows 7 that mostly works for offline activities. This is probaly what Bitlocker being on by default is about. Windows 11 Pro hat bitlock, but the Home edition in my home office does not. That might change with 24H2, that's where I don't know.

Well Brian I have a Microsoft account that I signed on for at installation but do find it tiresome at times. As for the good Microsoft products well mate there seems to be an equal number that are not so good. Mind you there are other accounts that I find still tedious at times for example the Google account which requires a sign in to TH-cam every other day I use it. Now as gathering data well my data would be of very little interest to anyone let alone Microsoft (unless you are that bored stupid) and of course Google does this same thing as well but the latter is handy for past requests, filling in words for searches etc. Now as you say using a PIN is just what I do and using a local account is not something which I would trust to be honest.
