For BitMusical’s final song, I decided to take this song of mine from 2012 for another spin! There’s been more history since then and I wanted to give the earlier parts that extra touch of animation as well, so here it is! Hope you enjoyed it.
And I hope you enjoyed watching BitMusical as much as I enjoyed making them. Keep an eye on this TH-cam for any future projects, such as the Brawl in the Family books and more new stuff I’ll be working on in 2025.

And so my friend, well now you know the history of Nintend…o.
(But here are the LYRICS in case you forget)
Just sit back and relax, my friend.
Today's lesson won't take too long.
And to make it more interesting,
It takes the form of this nerdy song.
The year is 1889,
Before the accolades and awards.
Nintendo got its start
By making hanafuda cards.
For a century, they grew and planned
To discover just what sells.
Making vacuums and Ultra Hand
And Love Testers and love hotels.
But they soon zeroed in on games
Like the Game & Watch and Color TV-Game 6!
In '81, they made Donkey Kong,
And the rest is history.
This is the history of Nintendo.
Spanning the years, hanafuda to Mario...
Straight from Kyoto, with a guy named Miyamoto,
This is the history of Nintendo.
1985: Mario and Link and Samus all made waves on this machine!
'89: All our mothers took our Game Boys to play Tetris on that tiny screen.
'91: Super Mario World taught us we could fly while riding dinosaurs.
'95: Virtual Boy had us seeing red, returning systems to their stores.
'96: Let's-a go with Mario to new horizons...
'98: Pokémania caught our hearts and dollars too.
2001: The GBA and GameCube lost some marketshare that day.
But we still loved to play Smash Bros. Melee...!
2004: They called it a third pillar, adding touch to our routine!
2006: Our grandmothers took our Wiimotes and then promptly hurled them through the screen!
2011: Three-dimensions and dual-screens let us fly while fighting meteors!
2012: The GamePad was a real tough sell, but it laid the groundwork for…
2017: This handheld/console hybrid is still goin’ strong…
2025: And maybe in a dozen years, I’ll add another verse to this song!
Hanafuda, Ultra Machine, Color TV-Game 15.
Monkey Magic, Test Driver, Popeye, VS. Mach Rider
Mario 3, Galaxy, Odyssey, Danganronpa, Ace Attorney
Breath of the Wild, Breath of Fire, Fire Emblem, Slay the Spire
Yamauchi, Miyamoto, Iwata, Sakurai, Sakamoto,
Tezuka, Totaka, Itoi, Arakawa, Kondo, Yokoi.
Tanaka, Uemura, Takeda, Aonuma
Phillips, Tilden, Martinet. Owsen, Trinen, Fils-Aime.
Dragon Quest 1 through Dragon Quest 7. DQ8, 9 and 11:
Echoes of an Elusive Age. Street Fighter and Streets of Rage
Super: Punch-Out, Ghouls ’n Ghosts. Breakout, Smash TV, Off Road.
Double Dragon, Tennis, Bonk. Bomberman, Star Wars, Air Zonk.
Super Castlevania IV, StarFox, Kirby Super Star
Octopath Traveler 2, Splatoon, Body Harvest, Harvest Moon
Metal Slug, Cuphead, Wii Fit, Perfect Dark, Smash Ultimate
Tadpole Treble-almost done-BitMusical! It’s been fun!
This is the history of Nintendo!
From Ana to Kat, Pikachu to Lucario…
This is the history of Nintendo!
From Nester to Ness, Waluigi to Wario.
Soon to be taught in schools all over Tokyo,
To solve the mysteries of Nintendo
This was the history of Nintendo!
This is like... the 3rd time a Matthew Taranto series has ended and broken my heart
He just keeps getting away with it and I love him for it
Brawl in The Family, this, and what else? Tadpole Treble?
@@TheApoke I consider all the Waluigi content to be it's own thing and that sorta ended fairly recently. I could also count Turnabout Musical in the list, so that would make it a 4th time one of his projects has concluded
watched the original in 2nd grade now i’m graduating college
I'm thinking of 1989 to tetris forever now and 2 switch online tetris games a month later. Time flies in so many ways.
I read that and thought... that can't be possible??
12 YEARS. HOLY MOLY.
Dude, same!!!!!!☺
I watched the original while i just started highscool, and now i have a job
Bro we're the same age lol
Easter eggs and other oddities!
-Color TV-Game 6 finally gets a proper name. This always bugged me about the original.
-Since this song is long and challenging, I used art from a lot of my past projects. Gamemaster Classified's timeline, the dancing Pokemon characters (originally timed to various Pokemon Christmas Bash songs), the Waluigi art, various BitMusical references, and more. It's kind of The History of What I've Been Up to Since the Last History of Nintendo!
-A couple little errors were fixed, like the 5-block Tetris piece and the Virtual Boy's release date. In fact, I nod to that with the 1994 sticking before going to 1995.
-I love the idea of someone picketing with a sign that says nothing more than PLOK
(-I'm glad no one's yet noticed I colored Inkling's paint the wrong color)
-Some of the additions in the bridge are among my favorite games of the last decade, like Breath of the Wild, DQXI, Streets of Rage (4), and Slay the Spire.
-All the "SUPER" games exist both as a Super and non-super version.
-The requisite BitMusical Tadpole Treble reference is more obvious than ever here! Totaka's song is more noticeable as well.
-The little cameos in "THIS WAS THE..." were my way of sneaking in a few obscure characters from other games I like. And The Ugly Thing! (which technically has appeared on a Nintendo console, in that weird Tadpole Treble easter egg)
-The final shot has a character from each of the 11 BitMusical songs.
-In the final shot, Sergeant Blue is saluting while standing on the back of his seat. This confirms he survived the night through End of Day! ...But he now has a second eyepatch.
Nice!
Holy shit 😮
I thought the blue ink for (Orange) Inkling was intentional, since blue and orange were the staple colors of the first Splatoon. 🦑
And as for Kid Icarus Uprising, its release year was 2012. 🪽
(I understand 2011 was the hype year with the trailers.)
@@AceAngelPrincess Yeah, I went back and forth on whether or not I should just have launch titles for the systems or other games as well. Kid Icarus was one of the defining games of the 3DS for me (and one that I played while working on the original History of Nintendo!) so I had it represent the system even though it came out later. Same with Advance Wars DS and Splatoon etc. Blue and orange were the original duo of colors which is why I went with it, but I later wondered if it made much sense. Kind of implies she took someone else's brush!
Don’t leave me again Matt
You did not have to do this. This was an old song that you could've easily guessed no one remembered or cared about anymore. And yet you not only remade it, but added to it. My heart literally skipped a beat when this popped up in my recommended. I did not see this coming at all. This makes me so happy. Thank you for what you do. Best of luck with your future endeavors!
I concur
This was always my favorite song you made. As the finale to Bit Musical, this is perfect.
oh my goodness gracious, I actually started to tear up at the end for some reason. I remember watching the original around when it came out, and it's been stuck in my head ever since - heck, I even did a presentation on the history of nintendo for an economics class once because of it! Hearing all of the slight changes and updated lyrics was so cool, and I'm so glad I got to hear it and be on this journey! thank you for everything, and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store!!
I DID THE SAME THING IN 4TH GRADE LOL
Love love LOVE that you incorporated artists and leaders into the patter-section :)
Loved this series! So cool to see how your musical abilities have evolved from all those years back.
Oh look.
It's a talking sock.
I've always been a "quiet fan", simply enjoying your videos, but today i want to thank you. From Brawl in the Family to BitMusical you've always managed to make me laugh, even on bad days. I'm sorry that this series didn't have the exposure it deserved (the algorhythm works in mysterious ways) but i'll accept this ending witha smile.
And if you ever decide to come back, we'll be waiting for you with open arms and especially open ears
3:40 the great thing about this remaster from then and now is that L was in fact real for Mario 64 during the gigaleak
No fierce crescendo peppered with strange innuendo? 😢
Joking aside, thank you so much for sharing your art with us. History of Nintendo and Ice World have been stuck in my head for the past decade and I just want you to know they've been a constant in a life that's otherwise been tumultuous at times. My grandmother was a huge fan of Nintendo and used to watch me play Mario Galaxy when I lived with her, and I remember showing her Ice World and her enjoying it. She passed 11 years ago (almost to the day), but your art definitely helps keep me positive during the holidays. I'm not sure what your plans are for the future, but I'll always be a fan. Thank you for this update to one of my favorite (nerdy) songs.
Matthew, I don't know if you remember this, but I wrote you a letter about a decade ago for a school project and told you how much I enjoyed your work, especially this song. You sent a handwritten letter back with some BITF drawings and a plush Baton. I still have them. This song has held a special place in my heart since the first time I heard it, and getting to hear a new version as an adult entering the workforce makes my inner child happy. Thank you so much for every BitMusical song and video, they've brought so much joy to so many people. It's been an honor to follow all of your endeavors for the last ten years, and I can't wait to see what the future brings!
This feels like the ending/intro theme of a musical
True that.
Well it is the Finale of BitMusical
I was here for the original song, and the ending of BitF back when Smash 3DS/Wii U was coming out, it's so nice having all these new uploads be a sort of trip down memory lane.
Your work will always have a special place in my heart, I can't understate just how much of an inspiration you are
for me, thank you💛
I HAVE FEELINGS NOW, MAN.
Ah, jeez. "The History of Nintendo" is my favorite song from Brawl in the Family, and for BitMusical to end with an updated rendition, it's just... chef's kiss. It really has bee fun, and I can't wait to see where you go next.
this was always my favorite of the original BITF songs. teared up a little hearing this upgraded version
As someone who loved Brawl in the Family so much back over 10 years ago this genuinely makes me so happy. I'm really glad that it got recommended out of nowhere, I had an insane double take.
Thank you Matt!
Bittersweet to see BitMusical go but it was fun.
I wanted a Dededoll so badly as a kid and held out hope that I'd stumble upon a reseller or maybe commission a custom -- to be able to finally fufill my little kid self's wish is a perfect book-end to Brawl in the Family's legacy.
*Last Day of School*
3:24 - You’re lining up at the door waiting to be dismissed
3:29 - You start reflecting on how much fun you had throughout the year
3:47 - The teacher finally dismisses you, you say your farewells, and walk off to enjoy your summer break!
I started reading Brawl in the Family around 2011, and it has been such a journey seeing you finish it off, make Tadpole Treble, and now bring it all together with BitMusical and your final Kickstarter for the series. I think I speak for many people when I say your work has been both a joy to experience and an inspiration and appreciation of the games we love. To whatever you make next, I wish you the best, Matthew!
Well dang it now I need to remember the fast part again.
What a fantastic song it’s crazy to think I first heard the original in middle school and now I’m in college. Thank you for this wonderful song
this is a full circle moment for me because the OG History of Nintendo was the first thing i saw from you when i stumbled upon it on YT way back when. thanks for everything; i will 100% be there for whatever comes next
Feeling emotional and nostalgic over some video games, songs etc. from over a decade ago is one thing.
Feeling emotional and nostalgic over a particular (nerdy) song is another thing, in the sense that I wasn't prepared for it.
Kudos to you for this beautiful remaked rendition!
I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING-
It's been 12 years since I first heard the original, and I mean this with 100% seriousness, it has made me into the massive Nintendo nerd I am today. Thanks man..
the original rings through my head whenever i think about nintendo, and a remake so many years later is so awesome
I'm sure it's been commented a million times already, but the original video was how I originally found Brawl in the Family way back in High School, I must've watched it dozens and dozens of times. Seeing it remade, getting to reflect on all of the new games I got into since the original came out (Danganronpa, Slay the Spire, etc), and getting to relive the magic I felt listening to the 2012 version is an absolute treat. Thanks for all of the amazing memories, Matthew!
This takes me back to a simpler time on the internet. Thank you, you beautiful man.
I literally was listening to older BitF songs this morning (and being shocked to how much of the lyrics retained in my memory banks after all these years), what a shock to see this in my subscriptions.
I thought Matt would add the lyric about 2023 Mario Movie hitting big in cinemas while grossing over 1.3 billion dollars
I learned the original’s lyrics as a kid before I learned multiplication.
I’ve grown up on Brawl in the family, I schooled everyone at my local gamestop and even became friends with the manager and his kid.
That was over 10 years ago
Now here I am learning the new lyrics. Yet it feels so natural…
And to say this is a successor is an understatement. It’s the best sequel/continuation of … forever!
10/10!
It’s been fun, Bit Musical.
🧡
I remember reading BitF back when I was in middle school and kept up with the series up until the end. I loved the idea on bringing in Adeline as part of the main crew, I always laughed when Waluigi was around doing his hijinks, the fan art people made were cool to browse, and even the musical bits you did after the comic were always a delight.
the we didnt start the fire reference was what got me
Rip bitmusical 2012 -2024
It's funny how less than 2 months after this released the Switch 2 was announced (officially)
I guess you could say, this was ONE FINAL SONG for BitMusical?
I remember hearing your newer stuff, not realizing it was you and going "oh hey this reminds me of BITF"
Little did I know!
The original lives in my head rent-free and seeing it expanded as a send off is so beautifully poetic to me ᵕ̈
Crazy to think that earlier this year was the 10th anniversary of BitF ending. I still listen to all the Christmas songs around the season, they're all time classics for me.
Oh man, it’s awesome to see this highlight from my adolescence get a second version. I still haven’t forgotten the montage section from the original, and it always made me happy to see it include my favourite game of all time, Little King’s Story.
Thank you for doing BitMusical this year, I’ve really enjoyed them!
(Oh and hey, Star Fox and Pikmin got mentions this time!)
This was the song that got me into your comic in the first place....
And what got me interested in gaming history in general...
This was an amazing treat that made me so emotional, thank you, truly
I'm so happy to see my favorite song get a shiny new coat of paint like this!! I loved hearing all the family legends chipping in to announce the years, that's such a sweet touch. Totaka's Song in that soundfont scratches such an itch in my brain, it sounds so cool! And I of have to thank you for including Danganronpa and Ace Attorney in this go-around, it was such a pleasant surprise. Well done once again!!
Having followed you for a long time, it’s crazy to think how you’ve gone from a bunch of silly comics about Kirby eating things to too many comics and songs to count, working alongside Howard Phillips, an actual game on Nintendo consoles, and a wife and children. Sad to see another project come to an end but looking forward to whatever the future holds!
It's been quite a ride. I'll admit I didn't find Brawl in the Family until after it finished, but I love its sense of humor, I've reread it too many times to count, and the songs are memorable and super charming. I was super glad when you came back with BitMusical, and I had a feeling you were going to remake this song, especially with the Nintendo Museum having opened.
This whole project was amazing. Thank you Matt, and everyone who worked on this project. You're all amazing and whatever your futures hold, I'm rooting for you all.
This song helped me pass a History of Video Games class in college!
Oh man, I remember listening to this so many times as a kid. I clicked the second I saw this recommended, and I thought it was the original one at first! Thank you for your comics and BitMusical!
Brawl in the Family never truly ends. Thank you for the songs Matthew! It's been great following this series and coming back to update a song that we all love so much
Perfect way to finish off the series! Looks like I’ve gotta get to memorizing this remake!
Now ya gotta add the switch 2!!!
Oh, goodness, I’m gonna miss this one something fierce.
Thanks for everything, looking forward to whatever comes next! ❤
Awesome!! WAA!! So much detail and polish. Thank you Matthew. I love that you frequently invite family and friends to join in too. Too silly and wholesome!!
The song that introduced me to BiTF so many years ago. I knew the second I saw the notification that this would get me misty-eyed.
Thank you for everything!!
i can't believe im at another matthew taranto finale all these years later
EDIT OH MY GOD OCTOPATH 2 MENTIONED
I found BitF in 2010 and saw the original version of this the day it got uploaded because I'd get home everyday and check to see if Brawl in the Family updated. Only just now found out that you did a short revival of the musicals. A little sad that I missed out on seeing them be uploaded but the original History of Nintendo was stuck in my head for the last 12 years.
I'm just so so happy to see this and I hope your future endeavors continue to inspire!! Brawl in the Family was one of the reasons I started drawing in the first place and means a lot to me..
How long has it been… I feel old… Thanks for this amazing series❤
The greatest gift we could have gotten this Christmas month! Got me super nostalgic ❤
Brawl in the family is my favorite webcomic and I absolutely love this new take on the original song. Thank you for blessing us once more!!!
Giving a salute, same as back when BitF ended - your content has been a delight for ages, and your songs even moreso for me. What a good sendoff, thank you!
This hits different at 1.15x speed~
2:38 And just like that, BitFinity showed more love and respect to the Breath of Fire franchise than Capcom has in the last 20 years.
I love your work! Your lyrics and music are amazing! Very fitting way to end this series! 10/10!
This is the 3rd time you've made me cry...
I was just thinking the other day how this song needed an update. Absolutely loved this, Matt and I remain a huge fan of your work.
I’m actually going to cry, these songs got me through some tough times in the past year and a half
Congrats on reaching the Kickstarter goal! Talk about a blast from the past. I wish you luck in your future endeavors, Matthew!
Thank you. I will be eagerly awaiting any news of your next ventures
This song feels like a history update for the man himself, with all the little Tarantos who weren't born yet making cameos.
Watching this looking for easter eggs, I noticed Phoenix pokes Monokuma's ridiculous belly button. It still feels so weird getting reminded that Dangan Ronpa is on a Nintendo console, let alone popping up here.
At 3:27, who is the old man with dynamite that appears on the left?
Uhh, Nester? What's that you've got hiding in your magazine? I sure hope it's not strange innuendo.
That's Professor Hector from Gyromite!
HOT TIPS!
This is great, like i dont even know what to say that hasnt been said already, its just all around amazing!! Thank you for this whole project, honestly
Man, I remember watching the original History of Nintendo years upon years ago back around the time it came out. Glad to see a revised version serve as the finale to BitMusical.
The original was how I discovered you in the first place. I’m unashamed to say I proudly sang along. Whatever you do next Matt, I’m entirely in.
Why am i just finding out about this now :')
What an amazing finale
I started reading late, a while after the comic ended, but I fell in love with your renditions of the characters, and your work always felt like a loveletter to gaming as a whole. Wherever you go, I can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned next!
Just want to say thanks again Matthew this series was so much fun
Here's to the next adventure!
The video that got me into the series. Deserves the remake more than any other!
Thank you, it was great to have you back. Good luck where ever to your journey will take you.
I love how you used the sounds that would have been used for the game systems when you list them by year! Super awesome work, loved the first History of Nintendo and this one is even more AWESOME
1985: Mario and Link and Samus all mad waves of this machine
1989: All our mothers took our Game Boys to play Tetris on that tiny screen
1991: Super Mario World taught us we could fly while riding dinosaurs
1995: Virtual Boy had us seeing red returning systems to their stores
1996: Let’s a go with Mario to new horizons
1998: Pokémania caught our hearts and dollars too
2001: The GBA and GameCube lost some marketshare that day
But we still love to play Smash Bros. Melee!
2004: They called it a third pillar, adding touch to our routine
2006: Our grandmothers took our Wiimotes and then quickly hurled them to the screen
2011: Three dimensions and duel screens let us fly while fighting meteors
2012: The Gamepad was a real tough sell but it laid the groundwork for…
2017: This handheld/console hybrid is still going strong
2025: The hybrid had a sequel including Mario Kart! (I made that verse up)
This is crazy cause I watched this when I was in like third grade and now I’m graduated and have a job. Love you Matthew you def inspired my love of gaming with these songs and BitF
seriously i LOVED the original history of nintendo when i was a kid and a remake is so cool
With how much I would sing this song randomly going about my day, it's very much a surreal experience to be hearing it again for the first time like this. Beautiful reprisal, and I'm looking forward to what you cook up next, Matthew! You're an inspiration and I appreciate your work!
A new take on an old classic, and it serves as BitMusical's finale at that!
Was nice to finally get an updated version of this after so long!
Thank you for creating BitMusical!
I used to sing the patter section of the original when I was young. It really helped me with my annunciation! Looks like I’ve got a new one to practice🥺❤️
I still remember this song from time to time, heck, I was literally humming it to myself a few days ago, so seeing it brought back and given new life was a pretty special experience. Your work had a massive impact on my childhood, and I’m sure the same can be said for many others here. Thank you, Matthew, for everything you’ve done.
STOP IT YOU’RE GONNA MAKE ME CRY!!!
What a great surprise! Thank you for this new version :D
It's been fun following your work since the comic days, good luck out there!
Amazing series of songs, well done!
Oh my gosh, this was a nostalgic landslide. It’s so interesting knowing the lyrics yet being surprised by how the song changed from the original. This may be your best one yet, and that’s saying a lot. One of the best TH-cam videos I’ve seen this year.
God i still remember all the lyrics by heart
Amazing seeing this remade after 12 years. Really loved that original video and this one is just as good. Great work as always.
I can't stop replaying. I just can't stop. Seeing this song almost made me tear up as I've been a Nintendo fan for over 15 years now. I loved all of your songs and comics beforehand too. I can't wait to see what you do in the future.
Let's a go to new horizons.
It's wild how hearing that hook come in again, it feels like just yesterday that I'd heard it :') And then when we started to mention the Switch - goosebumps. Man, amazing tribute as always! :D
Man I remember the original and seeing a remake makes me feel complete
I've been a BitF fan as far back as How the King Stole Christmas. History of Nintendo and Ode to Minions have been among my favorites since they were first uploaded- the originals still pop back into my head every now and then.
I was so excited to see this in the Backer Update and it did not disappoint. Love all the new additions and revisions you've made, it's just bursting with passion.
I CAN'T KEEP SAYING GOODBYE MATTHEW WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR LIKE FIFTEEN YEARS NOW AND IT STILL HURTS
Nice work, bun
We’ll miss it! I still hear all the Christmas songs every year!
I always revisit your songs. I especially do it at this time of your because you have great Christmas/winter songs. Thank you.
The original was my introduction to BitF, and I’ve read and loved the entire comic multiple times. I’ve also liked most of BitMusical (it was hit or miss, but mostly hit).
Thank you so much for this part of my childhood. I’m 18 now, so I was around 6 when I found you.
Edit: I probably would’ve been around 8 or something, because I found the comic after it ended.”
Totaka’s song went crazy. I love you
I remember when the first version of this came out! Thank you for all the wonderful songs
This was so beautiful... It made my cry... 😢😢😢
oh I’m totally getting that Dededoll
