The film industry and the whole culture industry is coming more and more homogenous. The capital and power they possess is making their hegemony more absolute every day. What we see is only simulation, but as social interaction is becoming increasingly instrumental and only an extension of purely rational exchange, the simulation is the only "reality" we can get grip on.

Very true! The real Annie Sullivan had to deal with Helen like this when she was only 7 yrs old (compared to Patty Duke, who was about 15 or 16 when they filmed this scene), although seeing it with a teenager in the role just shows you how much worse Annie would've had it if she hadn't started working with Helen until she was a teen.
Nonetheless I agree with everyone that this is a great scene and definitely shows why Bancroft & Duke won their Oscars that year as well.

She's not brilliant. She holds her head up for no reason so as to avoid seeing whats in front of her because she had to keep her eyes open. She is acting like kids do when we pretend to be blind. A true blind person looks ahead of them, with open eyes. I feel she couldn't act like that because it was too difficult for her, to neglect what she sees ahead of her. She was actually not that good.

My wife is an O&M, works with blind and deaf/blind of all ages in 3+ states. It sometimes can be exhausting and she needs down time. But she always says it is so worth it. She is my hero. The crap she endures sometimes can be incredibly cruel from both the sighted uneducated (the public and the educational system) and even her vision impaired clients. But in the end, she goes right back at it for over 20 years. She has trained hundreds of children and adults to become independent or less dependent with so many having life changing careers or lives with real skills. These professionals are true angels. Consider a career in these fields as there are very few and much needed. You will literally have a career for life--be that good or bad, the shortage is real. But the humanistic reward is great. 🙏
