As an American… 25 fyears ago I found myself at a very “techno” kinda club in Toronto.
    Lights came on.
    This song came on.
One of the best memories of my life.
The whole techno club went arm in arm and danced to this.
Lights coming on… full volume… people starting to go home… but the “last to leave” group all sang this out. We (ex g/f and I) had never heard it… but the crowd pulled us in, arms around shoulders fed us the lyrics. It was amazing. And it’s now. 25 years later… my end of the night song

Spirit of the West was the headliner.
    Outside concert at night.
The concert started and John walked up to the mic and said "We flew 500 miles to be here tonight, you guys can come up a bit closer to the stage."
    The whole crowd surged forward.
What a great concert it was.
The local hippies were set up beside the stage keeping time on the drums, at one time there was a bit of a duel going on between the band and the hippies
    People were dancing everywhere.
The grass in front of the stage turned into a mud pit but the people just kept going.
It was a hell of a night.

I took my then young teenage boys to see them at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. Spirit of the West were the headliners for the closing concert. The started the musical intro and all 2000 of us went nuts. Then John started with "You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best" then pointed the mic at us and we continued to sing the intro, on key, the whole crowd. It was a magical moment from a great concert. I'm so glad I got to see them live. RIP John, you are missed.

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
These so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest
We arrived in December, and London was cold
We stayed in the bars along Charing Cross Road
We never saw nothing but brass taps and oak
Kept a shine on the bar with the sleeves of our coats
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest
    Take me home!
Euston Station, the train journey north
In the buffet car we lurched back and forth
Past old crooked dikes through Yorkshire's green fields
We were flung into dance as the train jigged and reeled
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest
    Take me home!
By the light of the moon she'd drift through the streets
Her rare old perfume, so seductive and sweet
She'd tease us and flirt as the pubs all closed down
Then walk us on home and deny us a round
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest
    Take me home!
The gas heater's empty, it's damp as a tomb
The spirits we drank are now ghosts in the room
I'm knackered again, come on sleep, take me soon
And don't lift up my head till the twelve bells of noon
You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
And these so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest
    Take me home!

OMG I'm so sad to hear about John's death. Every time I hear this wonderful song it puts me in a great joyful mood to the point that I lose control of my legs and my feet go stomping wild as if they had a mind of their own with the radio cranked at the max. Many a times I thought I punctured the floor of my service truck while going to work with all that pounding and stomping. Just makes my day in every way! I'm Canadian born and of Italian descent but I think I may have Irish genes coursing through my body as I love many things that are from the Irish culture, women, clothing, music, spirits etc. May God Bless Ireland. I just can't get enough of this song. My sincere heartfelt condolences and prayers goes to his wife and family. Blessings upon his spirit, family, band mates and friends. R.I.P. John as you are surely entertaining heaven with a packed audience.

Early 2000s Vancouver, BC went to a club with a few friends. All in our late 20s or early 30s. Requested this song from the DJ (he seemed excited to play it), when it started dance floor emptied except for my table who all streamed onto the floor. Had it to ourselves for about a minute. Couldn’t believe all the early 20s patrons didn’t know the song.
