Any season that has new "Dr. Stone", I always put "Dr. Stone" above every other show. But if we get rid of that unbreakable rule of mine, "Oshi no Ko" is my #1 of the year. I don't remember the last time I became that obsessed with a show and then obsessed with the manga afterwards. The obsession faded after about 3 days and now I'm just a casual fan who remembers to read the latest batch of chapters every few months, but that show and the subsequent manga-read did something to my brain for a few weeks there. "Heavenly Delusion" is the coolest mystery series I've seen in a very long time. I heard manga-readers are even confused as to what the f*** is going on in that one.
I’m so happy that you put Onimai at #1. I totally agree as well for it being #1. It’s because of Onimai, I found out your channel and watch your review every week and enjoying it a lot. I have no words for how much I enjoyed the show, and not gonna lie it made me question a bit of myself and my sexuality a tiny bit more so than I already have in the past. Even though I have no plans to change anything about myself physically, that’s probably why I enjoyed it so much along with just how good the show is in terms of story. Really hoping for a 2nd season in the future! (I’m writing this at 5 am on my phone so ignore any weird grammar issues 😅)

Besides Mushoku Tensei, I didn't watch ANY of the anime from the 10th to the 1st place (although I DID watch some of the ones from the honorable mentions), and I very much enjoyed this year's show... I guess my taste in anime is quite different from Andrew's 😅 It'd be hard for me to rank my top 10 this year though...

Idk about my home hero it felt unfinished since it pull a anime original ending(manga not finished too). I also felt like the animation was really bad too. If you really like my home hero just go read the manga it way better.
The top 2 are easy for me: Oshi no Ko on 1 and Otaku Elf on 2. After that it becomes a bit more difficult, Onimai, Skip and Loafer, The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today and Dark Gathering are definitly somewhere above that. I have been watching 100 Girlfriends in the last few days, and that is definetely a lot of fun, but that might be recent bias. Can I add Bochi because I watched that this year? ;)
Thank you for your hard work as usual. I haven't watched much but I would say nothing hit the spot. Something was pleasant but that was it. I enjoyed way more shows from the 70s this year.
By the way, man If memory serves me right, soon after current event in Arknights we should get a "beach episode" one, where Swire "Alter" will be one of the key figures in the story. It will not be exactly a Swire the officer of the LGD, more like the "rich person's catgirl lady" vibe. But it still be Swire we know and love, just after some time since events you seen in the anime. The gacha banner will come with many free pulls, so theoretically you would be able to get her without prior savings, but I still decided to drop this info in advance just in case. (Worth checking in just for her outfit alone, Imo)
It's actually incredible, out of all the shows you mentioned here, only 1 (Mushoku Tensei) would make it into my top 10 of the year. Admittedly what I like and what is good quality are two completely different things because my taste is trash, but still.

Vinland Saga If the rules allowed it, Frieren, Shangri-La and Kusuriya no Hitorigoto would've all made it to top 5.
Vinland Saga deserves a spot somewhere on that list. Oshi no Ko and Heavenly Delusion are top3 no doubt. Onimai I'm gonna have to watch, since everyone praises this show.
the way he was talking about number 1 before announcing it, I totally thought it was gonna be VS and then he said onimai and I was ok ok jokes over let's announce the real thing and it never came💀
You convinced me to try Arknights and I mildly enjoyed the first half of season 1. Art and directing are great, animation is decent and characters are super cute. Also the world is quite immersive and original as far as dystopian sci/fi goes. The dialogues are a little stiff and huge exposition dumps via the amnesiac character are a little annoying, but I'll keep watching seeing that it gets better in season 2.
Despite all those exposition dumps you still may find yourself lost if you keep asking correct questions. What is Originium? How do Catastrophes work? How did they managed to build a whole ass moving city? Why some people use guns but other crossbows? Why that girl have a halo and angel wings? All of those are no just questions into the void. They all have meaningful answers. There are just *so much* to this world that it is ridiculous that original source is a mobile game. Heck, even the fact that PRTS called PRTS and speaks with feminine voice on a *different* from other characters' language has a reasons behind it. ... Excuse my rant please. Yeah, it is getting better in season 2, so it worth to continue if you already find it somewhat interesting.
When you were doing the introduction for your #1 pick for the year, I was pulling a blank from my tired brain. All these great shows this year. He's already put so many of my favorites in lower spots. (Dangers in My Heart at #4?! Really?!) So it was a true surprise when you put that pastel delight in first place. Yamada lv 999 and insominiacs after school where both INCRIDIBLE. Many shows on your list I did not watch yet, maybe will try some. That said, if FRIEREN was elegible, it would be WAY ahead of any other show
for me personally, the only 3 shows that i will agree as Aoty 2023 with no debate are: Oshi no Ko, Vinland Saga S2, and Frieren (but i think frieren isn't qualified as a 2023 show, maybe major sites will nominate it for 2024 instead)
Migi & Dali is right up there with Oshi no Ko for my #1 spot. Of the anime that didn't get mentioned, I'd like to call attention to two VERY different shows: UNDER NINJA - deeply weird, funny, creepy modern day ninja action, and IPPON AGAIN - a very sweet-yet-thrilling girls sports anime about Judo (I still need to get to Pluto and Scott Pilgrim.)
well, it's probably just yours but jumbled another way, but what I'd choose would be: 10. Undead Girl Murder Farce, 9. Jigokuraku, 8. Insomniacs, 7. Dark Gathering, 6. Hoshizuku Telepath, 5. Yuzuki, 4. Dangers in my Heart, 3. Heavenly Delusion, 2. 100 Kanojo, 1. Onimai other than those I also liked Shangri-La Frontier, Clueless First Friend and the big cat show, but they don't get a spot for various reasons. I was surprised at how much I ended up liking Jigokuraku. I dropped it mid-season and ended only finishing it in Spring, wait maybe that has to do with it given the lower quality of Spring's anime. Still liked its conclusion. I started watching Yuzuki after your standalone video on it, best decision of my life. Loved that damn show. Stunning adaptation out of nowhere. Cute. cute cute cute cute. Oshi no Ko was a hatewatch for me. It's just not my type of story, I can't really tell why that is either. I had a feeling I would like 100 Kanojo, but I never imagined I'd like it THAT much. I'm currently binging the manga (Ch 68 currently) and I can't stop thinking about this work. So perfect, so dense! the chapters are so dense. On the other hand Onimai's source material is... on the lower-quality side for sure. It's self-sufficient, it's enjoyable, but it's not well-drawn. Still following the series month after month though. also it's an anthology-heavy manga which is something I love. Did I mention Onimai gets number one because it's the anime that got me back into anime as a whole? Absolutely a strong year if I must be asked, but the last year I followed entirely was uh, 2019? Yeowch, it hurts.
I just know this year Anime Fall season isn't gonna be at Crunchyroll 2024 anime Award ceremony. I just know they're gonna end up adding 2022 fall anime show into that ceremony that wasn't there for 2023 Anime Awards show. I think It's a high possibility that Chainsaw Man, and possibly Bleach are gonna be there, with the other contender of this year (Minus fall 2023 shows), like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan. It's possible that all four those I mention could be anime of the year. Zom 100 could potentially be there since it's not a fall release.
That means Bocchi the Rock had the potential to sweep before Oshi no Ko came around, really bad luck, now it is older and less people remember it and it gained an insane competitor.
@zomfgroflmao1337 I'm telling you I just have this striking gut feeling that 2023 Fall Anime season isn't gonna be there. Cause I'm pretty that 2023 Anime Awards show also had anime shows that came out in fall of 2021. Crunchyroll Anime Awards are so out of wack that so of needs to be fixed. 1, stop including the previous year of Fall Anime season cause it makes not logic sense. And 2, this is a minor problem I had with 2023 anime awards show is they drop nomination for like others categories, specifically leaving out Best Boy, and Best Girl that were completely dropped out, and there were 2 other ones.

I also think SLF has been great, but Andrew doesn't include continuing shows for his top 10 and SLF will be having a Cour 2 in Winter 2024. Maybe it will make his top 10 for 2024.
When Oshi no Ko wasn't anime of the year I knew Onimai would take the number one spot. I love Onimai, so much that I read the manga afterwards, but I can't give it a spot over Oshi no Ko. First of all because I want to see more (also a reason I picked up the manga) and I'm not sure we will ever get more and anything that could serve as an end point that is even somewhat satisfying. I will say that the most impressive part is how they adapted the awkward manga, that made way too many stupid jokes because it felt like the mangaka wasn't really confident in the whole thing and felt the need to put awkward comedy in way too many places, it is just that it also makes it harder to create more of it unless the same people gets into the same mindset again. Oshi no Ko, while not complete, showed a clear vision of where it is going, and it was obviously made way easier by source material that was already masterwork material to begin with. My favorites (hell, I read the manga before and totally forgot that Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei aired this year and this list reminded me): Oshi no Ko Onimai Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei those are the really good ones that ended this year, but if we talk running this season the top gets very contested. With anime that are still running: Apothecary Diaries tied with Oshi no Ko Onimai Frieren (also Shangri-la Frontier exists somewhere) I watched a lot more decent shows this year like "Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu.", "Zom 100", "Jigokuraku" or the victorian England detective show with the immortal only head lady which name I forgot, but the four above are the ones to watch, even if you are 5 years in the future.
Hmm... Anime like: 100 Girlfriends, Magical Revolution & Dangers in my Heart were fun, but also came with too many frustrating elements. Can't rate them highly.

Well ok it is YOUR list ... but "My Happy Marriage" or " My love story with Yamada-kun at lvl999" not even in the honorable mentions? ... These would be high up in MY list at least ;). "Skip and Loafer" too. But then again i'm not too fond of fighting animes. I do not really like "Mushoku Tensei" and "JJK" for example.
I truly want to know why jjk didnt make it on your list. Maybe a shonen burnout? Is it too dark? Is it too popular therefore not having it will create a shock factor? Most of your criteria seems to be based on animation, direction, storyboard, and music. Which JJK is fantastic in each category. Funny how one person's favorite show is another's most hated. Onikmai is easily my most hated show of the year. I couldn't even finish the first episode. I truly despise it!🤪
I can understand hating the first episode if you go into it with a certain mindset, but I would still argue that it deserves a full watch anyway -- for the production values if nothing else. But it's ok if you still want to hate it, different people like different things.

Onimai is an abuse story of a psychopath who without consent transgenders her elder brother into a younger sister and has a step-by-step plan laid out on how he is to become a middle-schooler that she can coddle, dress up and play mom for. The brother-turned-sister is largely unconcerned with this change and at most whines about it. I'm not stupid, I get that it's meant to be comedic and wholesome, but to me it felt disturbing to watch how this person was essentially replaced with 'something better' with no effort to try and help him as he was (and there's no indication that he wanted help in the first place). It's not about him coming to terms with his situation and changing it, it's about her getting a more aesthetically pleasing sibling to build up from zero. On the quality, it's a girl's coming of age slice of life. The comedy is low effort and barely present, with the genderbender barely being relevant, as it might as well have been about a recluse girl getting back out there. If there was a better premise, like the sister being a genuinely disturbed person, the brother looking down on women and getting a new perspective or just being genuinely curious and wanting to have fun with it, this could've stood out as something interesting. I think, genuinely, that it is a bad show, not because of my alternative view on the idea but because it's not particularly funny and it wastes better opportunities on nothing particularly interesting. But that's just my opinion. Wild how one man's absolute trash is another man's Nr. 1.
Is it? I would describe it as "overpowered dude having fun with his girls" and don't think it is something new. We can replace main characters with Redo of Healer for example and nothing would really change.
@@VCE4 I'd admit it's very similar to Overlord. Overpowered dude, who is completely misunderstood by his harem. But Overlord went down hill for me and went completely dark. This is just full of laughter. Also this takes it up a notch. There's so much happening in anime in the background. Blink and you miss it. The group behind this show can really twist out the laughter and up the cringe esp when he does the atomic scenes. They really know how to make fun of themselves. Ah, brings back memories of Konasuba. And with the last episode, they excelled themselves, going full circle back to his homeworld, but it's changed. It's like breaking a fourth wall. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the folks behind this were from Gintama. The guy is so completely delusional.. That I wouldn't mind following this crazymans story. This is no redo the healer. That's real trash. This is the work of perfection. The fights, comedic moments, and voice acting, is just so great! I don't think there's been any funnier anime this year. Of course, I don't think this is for everyone if you don't get the jokes.

It because how annoying he is most people can't focus on the stuff that happening in the background(i think this is stupid because even i can see stuff in the background even though cid was crazy and wanted me to beat the shit out of him. For most people if mc is dumb/op/luck then the show for them=not good.
I cant convice myself to watch the brothers anime and i watch some ungodly amount of trash anime. It just bore me with the art style it has, it will need something drastic like a murder happening in the first 10mins otherwise im out or asleep
Haven't seen #10 but it looks and sounds like shit. #9 Not bad but overrated, don't see how its any better or worse than any other Harem show. #8 One of the most overrated, rushed, shallow things that people give a pass because its Yuri #7 Didn't see it but might check it out. #6 One of my favorites, was my favorite returning show this year (Yes even more so than Mushoku Tensei) Shame its so low, I'd put it higher. #5 Speaking of which, I like it but I can tell a lot of stuff got cut without being a source reader, still well done. #4 Honestly the biggest Cinderella Story of the Year (Both in and out of universe.) #3 YES BASED!!!! My favorite show of Spring (And Dangers in My Heart and Oshi No Ko would have been the best of Spring in Any other year.) #2 Speaking of which, I came in expecting it to be overrated based on what everyone was saying about it I thought it was going to be an edgy "subversive" decontruction and suck all the life out of everything else, fortunately is was just an honest look at characters that are human doing their best in brutal and vain world. #1 Based not my personal top pick, but I think its a solid choice. Handyman Satou in particular was one of my favorite new picks and I honestly thought it was the best Isekai (Yes even more so than Mushoku Tensei Season 2.) Dark Gathering is also based. No Vinland Saga or Pluto huh? And I know you have bad takes on The Fire Hunter. First half of the list was kinda mid to awful but it picked up in the second half. Zom 100 the part you hated to me was the best part so far.....

I totally agree Onimai is top tier anime. It's actually what got me back into anime along with Oshi no Ko and JJK after a big break.
Anime doesn't get much better than Onimai.

It's actually incredible, out of all the shows you mentioned here, only 1 (Mushoku Tensei) would make it into my top 10 of the year. Admittedly what I like and what is good quality are two completely different things because my taste is trash, but still.

You convinced me to try Arknights and I mildly enjoyed the first half of season 1. Art and directing are great, animation is decent and characters are super cute. Also the world is quite immersive and original as far as dystopian sci/fi goes. The dialogues are a little stiff and huge exposition dumps via the amnesiac character are a little annoying, but I'll keep watching seeing that it gets better in season 2.
Despite all those exposition dumps you still may find yourself lost if you keep asking correct questions.
What is Originium?
How do Catastrophes work?
How did they managed to build a whole ass moving city?
Why some people use guns but other crossbows?
Why that girl have a halo and angel wings?
All of those are no just questions into the void. They all have meaningful answers.
There are just *so much* to this world that it is ridiculous that original source is a mobile game.
Heck, even the fact that PRTS called PRTS and speaks with feminine voice on a *different* from other characters' language has a reasons behind it.

for me personally, the only 3 shows that i will agree as Aoty 2023 with no debate are: Oshi no Ko, Vinland Saga S2, and Frieren (but i think frieren isn't qualified as a 2023 show, maybe major sites will nominate it for 2024 instead)
Migi & Dali is right up there with Oshi no Ko for my #1 spot. Of the anime that didn't get mentioned, I'd like to call attention to two VERY different shows:
UNDER NINJA - deeply weird, funny, creepy modern day ninja action, and
IPPON AGAIN - a very sweet-yet-thrilling girls sports anime about Judo
(I still need to get to Pluto and Scott Pilgrim.)

I was surprised at how much I ended up liking Jigokuraku. I dropped it mid-season and ended only finishing it in Spring, wait maybe that has to do with it given the lower quality of Spring's anime. Still liked its conclusion.
I started watching Yuzuki after your standalone video on it, best decision of my life. Loved that damn show. Stunning adaptation out of nowhere. Cute. cute cute cute cute.
Oshi no Ko was a hatewatch for me. It's just not my type of story, I can't really tell why that is either.
I had a feeling I would like 100 Kanojo, but I never imagined I'd like it THAT much. I'm currently binging the manga (Ch 68 currently) and I can't stop thinking about this work. So perfect, so dense! the chapters are so dense.
On the other hand Onimai's source material is... on the lower-quality side for sure. It's self-sufficient, it's enjoyable, but it's not well-drawn. Still following the series month after month though. also it's an anthology-heavy manga which is something I love.
Did I mention Onimai gets number one because it's the anime that got me back into anime as a whole?
Absolutely a strong year if I must be asked, but the last year I followed entirely was uh, 2019? Yeowch, it hurts.
I just know this year Anime Fall season isn't gonna be at Crunchyroll 2024 anime Award ceremony. I just know they're gonna end up adding 2022 fall anime show into that ceremony that wasn't there for 2023 Anime Awards show. I think It's a high possibility that Chainsaw Man, and possibly Bleach are gonna be there, with the other contender of this year (Minus fall 2023 shows), like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan. It's possible that all four those I mention could be anime of the year. Zom 100 could potentially be there since it's not a fall release.
That means Bocchi the Rock had the potential to sweep before Oshi no Ko came around, really bad luck, now it is older and less people remember it and it gained an insane competitor.
@zomfgroflmao1337 I'm telling you I just have this striking gut feeling that 2023 Fall Anime season isn't gonna be there. Cause I'm pretty that 2023 Anime Awards show also had anime shows that came out in fall of 2021.
Crunchyroll Anime Awards are so out of wack that so of needs to be fixed. 1, stop including the previous year of Fall Anime season cause it makes not logic sense. And 2, this is a minor problem I had with 2023 anime awards show is they drop nomination for like others categories, specifically leaving out Best Boy, and Best Girl that were completely dropped out, and there were 2 other ones.
Hope we get an English Onimai bluray soon.

I also think SLF has been great, but Andrew doesn't include continuing shows for his top 10 and SLF will be having a Cour 2 in Winter 2024. Maybe it will make his top 10 for 2024.
When Oshi no Ko wasn't anime of the year I knew Onimai would take the number one spot. I love Onimai, so much that I read the manga afterwards, but I can't give it a spot over Oshi no Ko. First of all because I want to see more (also a reason I picked up the manga) and I'm not sure we will ever get more and anything that could serve as an end point that is even somewhat satisfying. I will say that the most impressive part is how they adapted the awkward manga, that made way too many stupid jokes because it felt like the mangaka wasn't really confident in the whole thing and felt the need to put awkward comedy in way too many places, it is just that it also makes it harder to create more of it unless the same people gets into the same mindset again. Oshi no Ko, while not complete, showed a clear vision of where it is going, and it was obviously made way easier by source material that was already masterwork material to begin with.
My favorites (hell, I read the manga before and totally forgot that Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei aired this year and this list reminded me):

those are the really good ones that ended this year, but if we talk running this season the top gets very contested.

I watched a lot more decent shows this year like "Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu.", "Zom 100", "Jigokuraku" or the victorian England detective show with the immortal only head lady which name I forgot, but the four above are the ones to watch, even if you are 5 years in the future.

Onimai is an abuse story of a psychopath who without consent transgenders her elder brother into a younger sister and has a step-by-step plan laid out on how he is to become a middle-schooler that she can coddle, dress up and play mom for. The brother-turned-sister is largely unconcerned with this change and at most whines about it.
I'm not stupid, I get that it's meant to be comedic and wholesome, but to me it felt disturbing to watch how this person was essentially replaced with 'something better' with no effort to try and help him as he was (and there's no indication that he wanted help in the first place). It's not about him coming to terms with his situation and changing it, it's about her getting a more aesthetically pleasing sibling to build up from zero.
On the quality, it's a girl's coming of age slice of life. The comedy is low effort and barely present, with the genderbender barely being relevant, as it might as well have been about a recluse girl getting back out there. If there was a better premise, like the sister being a genuinely disturbed person, the brother looking down on women and getting a new perspective or just being genuinely curious and wanting to have fun with it, this could've stood out as something interesting.
I think, genuinely, that it is a bad show, not because of my alternative view on the idea but because it's not particularly funny and it wastes better opportunities on nothing particularly interesting.
But that's just my opinion. Wild how one man's absolute trash is another man's Nr. 1.

@@VCE4 I'd admit it's very similar to Overlord. Overpowered dude, who is completely misunderstood by his harem. But Overlord went down hill for me and went completely dark. This is just full of laughter.
Also this takes it up a notch. There's so much happening in anime in the background. Blink and you miss it. The group behind this show can really twist out the laughter and up the cringe esp when he does the atomic scenes. They really know how to make fun of themselves. Ah, brings back memories of Konasuba.
And with the last episode, they excelled themselves, going full circle back to his homeworld, but it's changed. It's like breaking a fourth wall. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the folks behind this were from Gintama.
The guy is so completely delusional.. That I wouldn't mind following this crazymans story.
This is no redo the healer. That's real trash. This is the work of perfection. The fights, comedic moments, and voice acting, is just so great! I don't think there's been any funnier anime this year. Of course, I don't think this is for everyone if you don't get the jokes.
