That is a common myth, the level of salt that is used in a pool is a tiny fraction of what the "saltwater" of the ocean is. Generally speaking, chlorine itself is caustic, so if you have pool-grade materials, the low level of salt in the water doesn't have any effect. It's become the standard way to care of pools and has been established for many decades; in fact, the majority of new pools now use salt systems because of how safe and effective it is (7 out of 10 according to Pool & Spa News, as of 2016). "saltwater" just means using a salt chlorine generator. If you didn't want to generate free chlorine everyday when your pump runs, you could turn it off and go buy chlorine and manually add it to the pool constantly.

Water balance: you don't want to get sick, you don't want to burn your skin, you don't want to ruin your equipment. Water balance avoids that.
