That explains why Gladiator 2 looked like BTS footage in some scenes, Ridley shooting on a digital camera (using 15 cameras for some scenes to get as much footage as fast as possible to then move on) without taking the time to allow John to light them properly. It gave it that actors-doing-cosplay look that made it look like a streaming release compared to the gorgeous cinematic visual quality of kodak and eastman 35mm used for the first one where it actually looks like a professional studio movie from the big 5. The first 2 minute entrance into the colosseum before Maximus instructs the gladiators to all stick together just for sheer thrill-factor, soundtrack, tension building, visual quality..etc is far better than the entirety of the sequel. No joke, Russell Crowe came up with some of the most iconic lines and moments. Gladiator was made more on the hoof than I realised but it had real quality talent to save it. This seems shallow and confusing in stark comparison.
I don’t know Clint Eastwood personally but we have a guy at my church who is 92 and he looks and moves around like a guy who is 72 so Clint could still be in good shape for 96. Ya never know.
But how long can this old man move around like that? Can he start filming at 6am and finish late into the night? 90 year olds cannot work 10+ hour days lol. Sure a hour or 2 is no problem but that's it.
@ maybe I should have been more clear in my comment. I don’t disagree that Clint and Ridley should retire. I was just saying that some people in their 90’s are more energetic than you would expect.
I agree, not everyone is the same at 70, 80 or 90. Clint directed most of his best movies after 60. When he was a younger director, he did some duds like Breezy and The Eiger Sanction.
The thing is with Cameron hes already directed the Avatar movies he’s just waiting years for the VFX but all the performances have already been captured. Up till Avatar 4 I think.
He gave up years ago, if he was restricted like he was in 80s n 90s he was great. No limitations he doesnt know where to focus and makes bloated crap. His work 4 corman and aliens 2 is still something that hasnt been done 4 that budget since
You guys don’t get it. He wants to die making films. He doesn’t think he has any time left, so he’s just cranking them out. Working is his life. He wants to die working. Plus he’s probably carrying the spirit of his dead brother somewhere in there
Calling him lazy is a bit harsh I just see an 86 year old man trying to create all the movies he’s wanted to make before he dies. No wonder he’s rushing.
I don't know what's going on with Scott behind the scenes. I feel like, with this happening with so many people, and not just the older veterans, I think the real issue is the Hollywood machine. Even Spielberg and Zemickus haven't made a movie I like in 15 years. And you can see all the "notes" and "politics" invading their stuff. What I'm saying is, it may be that Scott is on the same leash as everyone else. And a film won't get greenlit unless it has all the "approved" content. Stuff he wouldn't do himself. Then further altered in post.
Ridley's best work was when he suffered under tight resources. I feel he thrived under those circumstances. There are a few high budget examples of his work where I feel he appreciated this.
With all due respect to the panel, I find it lame to suggest a director should retire because of his age. Scott is far from the top of his game but he’s miles ahead of 99% of 30 year old filmmakers working today. With a good script, he still makes great movies (The Last Duel) Ultimately, the market will decide if he should retire or not and so far the audience seems to be enjoying Gladiator 2. He does need to keep his budget in check though
Just because someone is past a certain age doesn't mean they want to stop doing what they love to do and are good at to sit and play dominoes in their pajamas for the rest of their lives. Some people do aspire to retirement but some do not. Hitchcock and DeMille were working to the end and thank God John Williams hasn't put down his baton yet.
I need to point out an inconsistency with your discussion. With Ridley Scott, you lamented that he was not mentoring young talent but when you discussed Clint Eastwood, you lamented that he was just being used by the studios to sit back and allow others to do the work. Clint IS mentoring.
Imagine if he completely stepped back from the mainstream after Prometheus, maybe do some small projects through Scott Free, but Prometheus was his last major hurrah... We wouldn't have gotten Covenant, Romulus, and Gladiator II, and instead would have gotten Blomkamp's Alien 5, done through Cameron's production company (which we know from the Fox buyout was killed because of Scott and Covenant). Would have been a better timeline
@@XekTOr89 He was the producer of it and it was his production studio. Also, according to the behind the scenes stuff, it was Scott who ultimately chose Fede's pitch. Romulus would not have happened without him, which is my point: He was heavily involved with each one of these films.
All undone projects always sound good on paper. Another Alien movie, done under Cameron, would have been a lot worse, I think. Didn't you watch Terminator: Dark Fate.
Scott was always impatient and a bit snarky, but he's gone off the rails the last decade or so. I'm not sure why he's trashing his own legacy by churning out shite.
Ridley was always inconsistent anyway. He made enough bad movies to not be considered great but also enough great movies to not be considered a bad director.
Clint Eastwood is WB ROYALTY. When he shows up at the end of the year with a film that he wants to be released for Academy consideration, they ask how high he wants them to jump. Source: my bestie worked in WB promotions finance dept for 25 years.

This has nothing to do with the video but I love how Disparu looks like he has a giant hand because of how well his arm matches the still image below lol.
Ridley is 80 and still able to direct big budget blockbuster spectacles you have no idea how hard they’re to direct. The stress and pressure would make most mortal men crack from the pressure. So many of tried and failed. Let the man cook for as long as he wants he likely won’t be around for much longer and deserves to pass away quietly between takes on his director chair doing what he loves
Smart analyses, as always. Big fan and student of Sir Ridley and his canon, but I truly believe that the quality of his movies started to decline when he switched from shooting on film to digital video. Just a professional observation...
Was a huge Ridley Scott fan, and fascinated about Napoleon. Was looking forward to Napoleon and i usually ignore negative comments when it’s a movie i really wanna watch. Couldn't bring myself to see it. Felt Joaquin was too old and yeah, heard absolutely nothing good about the film.
When his brother self-ended the year Prometheus released it seemed Scott began using the IPs he created to eulogize his brother. He told him to leave film school and come to Hollywood during the 80s British invasion of directors. He said "Come to L.A. I'll make you famous." Time to put the man to rest. ...maybe both.
You know, Sir David Attenborough is still doing his thing. From what I know his stuff is not too bad. Though, to be fair, most of his work is narration.
To your point about Clint Eastwood, at least he's been a lot more consistent than Ridley (not that it's a high bar) over the past decade with 'American Sniper,' 'Sully,' 'The Mule' and 'Richard Jewell' all ranging from good to great and going out with an absolute banger (even better than those 4) with 'Juror 2,' the best courtroom drama in theatres since 'The Lincoln Lawyer' and surpassing many of the films when the genre was in its prime ('Runaway Jury,' 'Red Corner,' 'A Civil Action,' 'The Rainmaker,' 'Fracture,' 'The Juror,' 'Suspect,' 'Dark Waters' and 'Class Action').
Not retire, just slow the hell down and pick the films better. He knows he is against the clock due to his age, so he is rushing his films and taking on too many.
Ridley Scott is no different to Zack Snyder to me anymore, someone who can create iconic, visually striking movies, but a terrible writer who's been surrounded by yes men so long he's been consumed by unchecked ego. He should never, ever be let near a script writer's pen ever again.
The truth is that many directors get better with age. Many directors keep directing until their 100's if they live that long. Manoel de Oliveira was from Portugal, and made films until he was 106, and he still had it at the end. Kurosawa's film, Ran, is his best and was made when he was 75. Eastwood is still going strong. Juror #2 is an excellent film. So is Woody Allen's Coup de Chance. The Ten Commandments was Cecil B DeMille's final film. He was 76 years old when he made it. It's his best film. If a director shoots "economically" (aka 8 hours days), it's much better for them in the long run. If they shoot the 18-20 hour days Iwhich many directors do), that's really hard to do at an advanced age. Even though Eyes Wide Shut is a great film IMO, Kubrick shot it like he usually did, long days, lots of takes, and by all accounts, he was absolutely exhausted at the end of every shooting day. He died shortly after screening the film to Tom and Nicole (and the 2 heads at Warner Brothers). He very well may have killed himself on that film. Who knows? I don't know if Ridley shoots long days or economical ones.
Martin Scorsese is a perfect example of a director STILL in his prime. Phenomenal filmmaking. Ridley Scott hasn’t made a decent movie in quite some time. Gladiator 2 was very meh but mostly 👎.
What I am afraid of is that the old guard from the new Hollywood era will pass on but the filmmakers of this decade are nowhere near as good compared to that era, and that is unfortunately who we will be stuck with.
The culture is degenerating everywhere, so it might not be Ridley Scott's fault. He might be just reacting to and managing the situation that exists at the moment. Imagine how many people he's surrounded by that were hired not for their skill or competence, but for their skin color or genitalia or sexual proclivities. The people around him are surely of much lower quality than in his past projects. He has to do things now in such a way that these hangers-on can't mess it up too badly. He learned that you can't trust one camera man anymore, he needs three now so he can pick the best shot out of all three medicore results. He learned that post-production and CGI are required because these idiots leave booms and coffee cups in the shot all the time. I don't think we can jump to blaming Ridley Scott without more information. DEI on average has lowered the quality of people in key positions. There is much more going on with all this, and the effects run deep. AND I would want to know a lot more about this person lodging these complaints about him before putting too much stock in them.
So I have a friend who works in Visual Effects. She worked on Napoleon, or specifically her company did so they did many things. I asked her what the weirdest effect they had to do was, and she told me "A flag blowing in the breeze, cos it wasn't windy that day and Ridley insisted on the flag blowing in a small corner of the screen". She said it took forever and replicating the armies was easier. But yeah, if he is running things out, it is likely cos he's 86 and may not have long left. And with him and Eastwood or even Francis Ford Coppola, who are at that stage of their lives, asking "Why are you still doing this?", cos is it a money thing or a creative thing or what??
There's an audio interview of this online of this. He didn't say Scott is lazy at all. Now there's loads of videos saying he's lazy and Scott is hack, he said he doesn't like the way he works now compared to the past , that's all., God I feel sorry for Hollywood having to put up with all this nonsense lol
-Ridley Scott’s moment of realization came in the form of Alien: Romulus and Gladiator II. -Francis Ford Coppola moment of realization came in the form of Megalopolis. -Martin Scorsese had his moment of realization when he made both The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon. These legendary artists contributed works of art that elevated the craft. But there will come the day when it is time to put your feet up and let the next generation come forth.
"If you got nothing left to prove get crazy, experimental, cause why not?" Remember that when you'll be reviewing Coppola's Megalopolis, it's getting pummeled unnecessarily.

Scott definitely would have done a worse job. I really don’t even love the original blade runner. I think its visual style becoming the template for sci-fi has people elevating it higher than it should be.
Shouldnt have been made at all....Ford mailing in another "performance" ruining another iconic character of his in exchange for a truckload of cash he doesnt need. Also disrespected Sean Young.
Not just Ridley: Hollywood in general needs to overhaul it's current staff directors like Chistopher Nolan, producers like Kathleen Kennedy, and actors like Rachel Zegler.
Christopher is sitting in his own lane making films that are relatively fine. Like them or not, they aren't nearly as corrosive as what Kathleen has done to Star Wars. And I haven't seen Rachel Zegler in years, why are you bringing her up? She seems to have already lost relevancy.

Ridley and Francis Ford Coppola need to run a shuffleboard tournament
Megaopolis feels like a sequel to Gladiator.
As bad as it is, at least Megalopolis is Coppola’s original idea.
Don’t forget to invite Martin Scorsese.
@@nont18411 And not to forget Apocalypse Now,Which is one of the best films ever made.

I liked it for how insane and new it was.
Gladiator 2 is Gladiator without Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe's fingerprints are all over that film.
No joke, Russell Crowe came up with some of the most iconic lines and moments. Gladiator was made more on the hoof than I realised but it had real quality talent to save it. This seems shallow and confusing in stark comparison.
@@jneilson7568 Last I heard the script wasn't even finished yet when they started filming.
Let's not forget Jim Cameron as well.
The thing is with Cameron hes already directed the Avatar movies he’s just waiting years for the VFX but all the performances have already been captured. Up till Avatar 4 I think.
After Prometheus and Covenant yes.
He gave up years ago, if he was restricted like he was in 80s n 90s he was great. No limitations he doesnt know where to focus and makes bloated crap. His work 4 corman and aliens 2 is still something that hasnt been done 4 that budget since
@@anubusx Prometheus and Covenant were Scott, not Cameron
they need to also stop filming stephen king books. dude is so overrated.
Ridley Scott was always more visual then story wise oriented
He should've retired over two decades ago.
Back in 2007 after American Gangster.
After Kingdom of Heaven.
You guys don’t get it. He wants to die making films. He doesn’t think he has any time left, so he’s just cranking them out. Working is his life. He wants to die working.
Plus he’s probably carrying the spirit of his dead brother somewhere in there
Finally dragged myself into watching Gladiator 2. Man it was bad.
Like really, really bad…
Not a lot of people were entertained.
A Film By Ridley Stop
🤣🤣
2:37 That’s what Coppola did with Megalopolis. Despite the movie being an incoherent mess, I respect him for going all in with this.
Age is not an excuse, Clint Eastwood is still making good movies and he's 94. Even George Miller at 79 is a better director.
With a good script, he still makes great movies (The Last Duel)
Ultimately, the market will decide if he should retire or not and so far the audience seems to be enjoying Gladiator 2.
He does need to keep his budget in check though
Alien Covenant was such a let down
for me as a die hard Alien fan ... that I didn't even consider watching
that last one, Romulus or whatever .
Romulus (while not a superb film) is far better than Prometheus or Covenant...because Ridely Scott didn't direct it.
Covenant is overhated
@@oskar6661Not better than Prometheus. And Scott might as well have a directing credit for Romulus with how much it borrowed from the original.
I watched Romulus the other night on Hulu and it's just forgettable. It feels like you're watching a cover band and still living off the past.
@@_YourFlyIsOpen No it's not. It retroactively makes every Alien movie worse.
And that movie sucked
Romulus wasn't done by him tho, was it?
@@XekTOr89 He was the producer of it and it was his production studio. Also, according to the behind the scenes stuff, it was Scott who ultimately chose Fede's pitch.
Romulus would not have happened without him, which is my point: He was heavily involved with each one of these films.
All undone projects always sound good on paper. Another Alien movie, done under Cameron, would have been a lot worse, I think. Didn't you watch Terminator: Dark Fate.
Blokamp is more miss than hit, but his Alien idea did sound good
Ridley has been treading water since American Gangster.
Completely agree.
The Last Duel is an exception.
Exactly, that is when Ridley should've stepped away.
Ridley Scott's next movie: Titanic 2....
There's a lot of cool ideas for great films. Titanic 2, starring Arnold Swarm egger lol
Not to mention a drunk. He was clearly drunk for some of those Covenant interviews.
$$$$$$$$
Nobody will remember
Clint Eastwood is WB ROYALTY. When he shows up at the end of the year with a film that he wants to be released for Academy consideration, they ask how high he wants them to jump. Source: my bestie worked in WB promotions finance dept for 25 years.
Ridley should've retired before Prometheus
It would have been a good movie if it wasn’t tied to the Alien franchise. He still cared then.
He's better than 98% of modern directors. No thanks.
Yes, but most of those guys are total shit.
Ridley Scott: we need to make a prequel to Gladiator and we will connect it with Alien by bringing in the Black Goo from Prometheus.

He’s just in it for a pay cheque at this point
It's time for Ridley Scott to give us Raised by Wolves Season 3
Smart analyses, as always. Big fan and student of Sir Ridley and his canon, but I truly believe that the quality of his movies started to decline when he switched from shooting on film to digital video. Just a professional observation...
Was a huge Ridley Scott fan, and fascinated about Napoleon. Was looking forward to Napoleon and i usually ignore negative comments when it’s a movie i really wanna watch. Couldn't bring myself to see it. Felt Joaquin was too old and yeah, heard absolutely nothing good about the film.
I saw Napoleon, despite the reviews. I enjoyed it to some degree but I’d only give it 6 out of 10.
When his brother self-ended the year Prometheus released it seemed Scott began using the IPs he created to eulogize his brother. He told him to leave film school and come to Hollywood during the 80s British invasion of directors. He said "Come to L.A. I'll make you famous."
Time to put the man to rest. ...maybe both.
You know, Sir David Attenborough is still doing his thing. From what I know his stuff is not too bad. Though, to be fair, most of his work is narration.
To be fair, I don’t think anyone could make a good Gladiator 2 film.
Funny how clint eastwood manages to pump out great movies and look how old he is
_The Last Duel_ wasn't a bad movie. It wasn't great, but I enjoyed it. I'm also a fan of decent period pieces. So, I'm a little biased.
You either retire a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a talentless hack
This comment makes no sense. No one loses their talent.
Not retire, just slow the hell down and pick the films better.
He knows he is against the clock due to his age, so he is rushing his films and taking on too many.
He shoulda retired after Prometheus yet here we are over a decade later lol
Ideally he should have retired before Prometheus.
He should retire after the martian
Before. BEFORE Prometheus...
He should have stopped with “The Martian”.
You shouldn’t tell someone what they should do with their life and career.
Ridley Scott is no different to Zack Snyder to me anymore, someone who can create iconic, visually striking movies, but a terrible writer who's been surrounded by yes men so long he's been consumed by unchecked ego. He should never, ever be let near a script writer's pen ever again.
Each time you post, I'm excited!
Finally someone has come out and said it. It's plain to see how bad the quality of his work has sunk.
Gladiator 2 was terrible, I wouldn't even call it a movie 🚮
I'd rather see him double down and suck the studios dry by making even more outrageous and expensive flops.
I agree. It's funnier
Ridley's impatient because he's running out of time.
He's old.
It ain't art, it's a living.
Martin Scorsese is a perfect example of a director STILL in his prime. Phenomenal filmmaking. Ridley Scott hasn’t made a decent movie in quite some time. Gladiator 2 was very meh but mostly 👎.
The guy's 87. Being lazy, impatient and disinterested are all the traits of guys that age.
I think the guy's just demotivated, his Prometheus didn't do so well, Napoleon same, I think he's just deflated
He's destroying his own legacy...
What I am afraid of is that the old guard from the new Hollywood era will pass on but the filmmakers of this decade are nowhere near as good compared to that era, and that is unfortunately who we will be stuck with.
So basically Hollywood is dead
@ pretty much
The culture is degenerating everywhere, so it might not be Ridley Scott's fault.
I'm really glad he had nothing to do with the Blade Runner sequel.
He would have ruined it for sure.
I care about seeing Ridley Scott latest movies as much as Scott cares about historical accuracy.
Its about the money not art.

A bad Ridley Scott movie, is better than a bad movie from a promising young director.
If you study ALL you can about the 1st Gladiator you'd see he improvised much of the film, he thought he can do that from then on. No one can.
Been saying this for years. His last decent movie was the Martian (all the way back in 2015). Since then? Nothing but over bloated, pretentious turds
The Martian was decent but even that feels forgettable. His last really good movie was American Gangster in 2007.
Kurosawa was still making good films at 85 and he was functionally blind...
0:54 I believe all of this
-Ridley Scott’s moment of realization came in the form of Alien: Romulus and Gladiator II.
Like, 3 movies ago. Prometheus, Covenant, and Romulus are NOT canon.
Those films ruined the Alien franchise.

Not just Ridley: Hollywood in general needs to overhaul it's current staff directors like Chistopher Nolan, producers like Kathleen Kennedy, and actors like Rachel Zegler.
Why Christopher Nolan?
Christopher is sitting in his own lane making films that are relatively fine.
Like them or not, they aren't nearly as corrosive as what Kathleen has done to Star Wars.
And I haven't seen Rachel Zegler in years, why are you bringing her up?
She seems to have already lost relevancy.
@@MisterAnonymous1000 Christopher Nolan was the director that made me realise not all movies can be good.
