I like your take on this Phil. This is my top Ren track honestly. But it means something different for me. Speaks of depression, the feeling of voices in your head lying to you. When it’s bad enough and suicidal ideations kick in, dead bodies in the walls and floors seem to beckon. Like Tyler Joseph said in Neon Gravestones “they try to call for my bones”. I’ve visited that tomb, and it sounds very familiar. Thankfully not today.
But this song came at a time I needed reminding I’m not alone. So I’m indebted to Ren and Chinchilla for this, even though they don’t know it.

I completely agree. I've lost myself and have been struggling to find me agree. I just discovered this song a month ago. It is the best description for what I feel. I'm working on it. ❤

Another great collaboration is 'Ren ft. Bibi - Crutch'. It's so heartbreaking, beautiful and deep. Totally underrated in my opinion. It also has a great no-budget video. 'Crutch' dates back to a time when Ren thought he wouldn't live much longer. Bibi was his girlfriend at the time and started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his treatment/diagnosis.

To me, this song is about overwhelming grief and its physical and psychological effects on your life. You feel completely lost and know that nothing will ever be the same again. You have to eventually find a new way to be you. I enjoyed your interpretation and it caused me to look at the song from a new angle.

The bond and connection between Ren and Chinchilla is incredible. Ren refers to Chinchilla as his musical sibling. They recently recorded a couple new tracks together. Can’t wait 🔥

This is a lovely interpretation of this powerful song.
I know the last part if the song is about his friend Joe Hughes,. I have imagined the rest of tbe song as being from Joe's point if view in his depression, though Ren has never said.
I can see your interpretation as being fully valid. Thank you for this!

The song is about Ren's friend Joe, as I'm sure you've read by now. To get a better feel for that, I'd recommend 'freckled angels' (there is a version out there I believe was Ren's 1st live performance of it that is very emotional), 'suicide' & 'for joe'

BTW this was filmed on the bridge that Ren's childhood friend, Joe, jumped from when he unalived himself. I believe (but am not 100% certain) that Ren has said that he wrote this song from Joe's perspective, and at least for me, the lyrics easily fit that interpretation. However, I firmly believe that a piece of art stands on its own, and the creator of that art can share their intentions, but we're under no obligation to give what they intended any special weight when interpreting the art for ourselves. One of my favorite examples of this is Pearl Jam's "Alive", where the chorus "I'm Still Alive" was intended to be sad/ironic. Audiences, however, sang along with gusto and joy, claiming it as a triumphant anthem. Over time, Eddie Vedder was moved by the way fans embraced that interpretation, and changed the way he himself sung the chorus. He said in an interview that changing the way he sang the chorus was cathartic and helped him accept and move past some of the pain that he was still carrying around that prompted the song in the first place. TL;DR: I don't think your interpretation matches what Ren was thinking when he wrote the song, but I don't think that makes your interpretation any less valid or interesting.

Nice reply. Like the pearl jam info. FYI, this was not the same bridge... I believe they couldn't get permission to shoot there, but it is very close to the same bridge.

Just a heads up, at least the last part that Ren sings on this is about his best friend, Joe, who unalived himself 13 years or so ago. I believe that was the intention from Ren's perspective in writing this song but I also feel that the way you described was accurate in a sense because it is about a relationship except between friends rather then loves, which I feel can be a lot more painful at times then losing someone you felt you were in love with because if someone is a friend, especially a best friend, they can know more about you, have been in your life for much longer, and feel closer then even blood relatives. Ren has been thru a lot of things in his 33 (34 years this month!) Things many people would have a hard time dealing with and he's found a way of turning that pain into beautiful music that many people connect with and that helps others deal with their own problems. I hope the rest of the Renegades appreciate your genuine thoughts and first time reaction to Ren's music. ❤

Ren's physical illness started in 2010, just as his musical career was about to take off. On December 28th 2010 his best friend, Joe Hughes, killed himself. Ren's physical illness worsened over the next 3 to 5 years and morphed into psychosis. I suspect (but don't know) that most of this song relates to his journey through illness/psychosis and how he lost his identity because of it. The last bit is definitely about Joe. I wonder if Ren was acknowledging that a) the loss of Joe had contributed to his illness/loss of self or b) he had finally found himself enough to acknowledge and accept that Joe had passed. (I suspect, and hope, the latter)

I see in the comments that they drew your attention to the fact that the words of the song are about depression, suicide and the hopeless situation of an individual. Anyway, I don't think you misinterpreted it, because a person must have good relationship with himself in order to survive and all of us find our own thruth in lyrics.
This song was 1th in my playlist last year.
    Love it.

Nice reaction and as always, thank you for showcasing these incredible indy artists. Ren said in an interview that his buddy Joe had gone through a couple of hard breakups just before he took his own life. I had never interpreted the song like you did today, but it makes sense in that context. RIP Joe.

I'm pretty sure he is not talking about losing who he/someone is because of not being your true self to please a partner, but rather losing oneself, forgetting how to be me, to a depression. The depression takes over so at last he doesn't recognize himself, he has lost his true character. And to me he is clearly describing a state of a person so depressed as being suicidal. Every word fits into that. And Ren's friend committed suicide, as mentioned in the last words Ren sings, because of depression. You can look at this as Ren's thought about how his friend's depressed mind was working, or rather not working, before the suicide or/and how he himself was thinking when in his own darkest moments. I myself have suffered from deep depression and every word makes sense as a description of a depressed mind that can't escape it's own thoughts and is prisoned in a very dark place.

Especially for Ren's music because you seem to understand him and the way he thinks and creates.

PS - I know you are a huge MGK fan (as am I) and i didn't see a reaction to his most recent song from a week or 2 ago - Let Me Go - and this is the vulnerable, open, introspective side of MGK with melodic rapping and a beat I'm pretty sure he made most of by himself. Would love to see your reaction to it, wish I could pay for you to do it but thought maybe you might do it just because you're a fan of MGK and just didn't know he dropped new music! ❤

Strangely interesting how you associate this song with relationships. Nope, that's not it honey. But that is a good try. First listen to it, before interjecting some of your thoughts. I can understand why you do it, others also keep wanting to stop after a few lines or verses and think they already understand Ren. I wasn't trying to be derogatory but just want you to first listen to at least half of a Ren song before coming up with what it's about.
