The fact that Ellie goes from screaming & struggling cuz she thinks someone else is coming after her to being completely unable to put a sentence together when she sees Joel.... OOOOF. She even tries to explain what just happened to her but can only get one word out before just incoherently babbling. That got me. That poor girl.

The crazy thing is in a roundtable with Pedro Pascal, Neil Druckmann, and Craig Mazin, Bella Ramsey said they filmed the last scene of the episode reuniting with Joel BEFORE they filmed the David scene. Once again illustrates what a brilliant actor Bella is.

@T Bear-Aspirin it's impressive acting but it's not that crazy... she basically beat on a sandbag behind the door for a while and then came out. So she did the fight scene first, they just didn't film it.

The beauty of listening to your emotion-filled outro was the truest confirmation that this show has captured the character Arcs, emotion, and critical story beats found in the game. It's precisely why the game is viewed as such a masterpiece in storytelling. I'm so glad that people that haven't played the game are finally getting to enjoy this story

I truly found it horrifying that David's character was once responsible for teaching children that were Ellie's age and frightened me the most was his final confrontation her and knowing that the only reason Ellie managed to get free was David let loose one of her hands to undue his pants. 🤢

No worries about how you're reacting, we're all choked up at how this episode went. So bittersweet to Ellie be so strong yet so traumatized by everything, and yet also show us as the viewers that she truly is capable on her own but still wants Joel, not necessarily needs Joel. I was sobbing after he said "baby girl" to her.

The worst part about David is when it hit me that he said he'd always had a violent heart and then remembered that he'd said he'd been a school teacher of kids her age. I almost wish they'd showed what he looked like after Ellie was done with him. Also I think that the guy that wanted to shoot Ellie when she was on the ground may have been trying to do her a 'kindness' by not letting David get to her.

  • @Crimsontiger133
    @Crimsontiger133 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is why Joel didnt want her to be put in the situation where she has someone depending on her cause it can really be so much of a burden to have to take care of everyone. Joel knows first hand what it does to you and why he wanted her to leave him. Ellie was strong enough to get through this short period fortunately but not completely intact.

It’s not embarrassing at all, trust me! There’s a reason why this game was loved so much. Joel and Ellie are great and it’s the attachment and how you care about what happens to them is what especially what makes the game so strong. Even in the game during this part with Ellie losing her innocence killing David and then Joel calling her his baby girl always gets people emotional and teary eyed.
The fact you feel the same way from watching the show with less time really shows how well they are doing with making you care for these characters.
Ngl they made david even worse in the show, he’s a creep in the game as well but the show made that even more apparent whereas some people miss it in the game (don’t know how) but they made it so you can’t miss that at all. I saw a lot of people worry before this episode came out that they would try to humanise David in a way but I’m glad they didn’t, they made it clear he’s terrible

"If you lost in the darkness, look for the light"
If Ellie was the light in the darkness, there is not much left of it now. For Joel, it's still enough. He regains his light through her, at the same time she loses hers through him and this world.
Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's and Henry's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before.
There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize.
We have already seen this in her. Her slightly morbid side when she tortured the stalker and then kills him (because of Riley). She gets very close to a dead man who has just committed suicide and then laughs as he breaks through the ground. She watches in fascination when Joel beats the soldier to death in episode 1. The constant asking for a gun. This side in her is not dominant but it is there.
Another very good change to the game was to show that Joel didn't manage to interrupt Ellie's Overkill. So this scene ran much longer than in the game. Which shows that Ellie does not come to an end so easily when she has started something based on her emotions. Her emotions/charakter don't allow that. This wasn't just an overkill, this was an over-overkill.
We learned that David and James use codes when they speak. So it is easy to imagine that they did not spoted a deer but humans. The conversation they had about how much rations they still have was certainly coded. Three human bodies were hanging there. That's what should last another week or two. Then they decided to go hunting after a "deer". The four men David sent out two episodes ago were certainly also on the hunt for people. That's why Joel was directly attacked.
Even though David says that only a few people know and he certainly believes that, I think everyone there knows what they are eating. They are all afraid of David and he is their provider after all. No one asks questions because nobody wants to hear the answer, but everyone knows. If you say something, it becomes true. For them, David is God and every time David speaks of God or Father, he means himself. Even the banner in the steakhouse "when we are in need, he shall provides" is nothing more than a reminder to people that it is David who ensures their survival and not God.
The story David told Ellie by the fire is certainly not true either. He said they were ambushed by raiders after they fled Pittsburgh. I'm sure they didn't escape them, they ate them and they certainly weren't raiders. He just wanted to have Ellie's trust. He wanted to be her good new "father".
The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. After all, mommy cooked him well. And of course, David has real penicillin for Ellie. They don't want to eat infected meat.
It bothered me at first that none of the people of the city showed up at the end. But of course, the rest of the people didn't realize what was going on. The weather is shit and cold. They will sit in their houses and scrape the remains of the girls daddy out of their teeth. Okay, enough of the macabre. 😁
I also think it's cool and urgently needed that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1.
This is Joel we know and he liked it. This is Joel when Ellie is not with him.
A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David.
"Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown Joel her bite.
Troy Baker (Game Joel) as James was sensationell good. I didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel.
There will be properly another timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.

While I thought the show's actor did a phenomenal job, I honestly prefer the game's David. He was also a creep in the game, but it was more subtle and nuanced in the game (there was no "the fighting is the part I like the most" line, for example. That line is way too obvious). Also, the whole tropey, religious/cult aspect to his character was nonexistent in the game.
Ironically, I found the videogame version more realistic as a human being (a fucked up one, sure) than the "real", live-action version.

    • @BrendanBeckett
      @BrendanBeckett ปีที่แล้ว +2

Except in the game his voice was like "hello I'm a pedophile rapist murderer cannibal nice to meet you" from the jump, whereas here he had a genuinely warm and inviting personality at first here. He was much more believable here as a charismatic leader who could manipulate people, and used tactics that are true to life. In the game I never quite understood what his deal was or why he was given authority in that group.
It's also not true that the religious part wasn't in the game, it was very much implied they just didn't go into it, which is a shame because it enhances the whole thing and makes it make sense to me.
It wasn't even ever totally clear what David was gonna do at the end with Ellie, so I'm glad they made it explicit. I always felt like they were too scared to come out and just say what was happening in the game, even if that's not what they were doing.

A plausible interpretation would just be that he has a weird fatherly mentor complex or wants to raise someone in his image or something weird like that. • @Dark__Thoughts

If you think an old guy touching a little girl romantically like that has no sexual intentions then you're either a pedo or a naive idiot. And while it's a likely conclusion based on that, it's not confirmed. David was clearly a very strange person, so it would make sense he would have some very bizarre motivations that aren't what is typical.

I tried to have open thoughts but realizing it was based on a video game kinda ruined it, Set formats I do not like no matter the superb acting.

What it's based on should have no effect on your perception of it, the show exists on it's own.
