Hey bud. Must have watched this video 20 times. Thanks to this video we were able to make our VW LT28 sliding door into a gull wing door. We made a quick video as LT enthusiast were asking. We also put your video in our caption. Thanks again.
Blij dat ik jullie gevonden heb. Zeer duidelijke uitleg.
Beautiful door bro, eventually I want to take a bus and split the door in half like a jet, and make the bottom half, the steps to get in, and the top half polycarbonate, to use it as a window 😎👍🏼
Highlight: Sergio screeches onto the sidewalk to save the day (2-man job.) Takeaways: Don't listen to your angle grinder; Always do the safety squint (Safety 3rd.)
I want to make my side sliding door open like a normal car door.. Gonna put some heavy duty hinges down one side of the door.. (The locking mechanism is on the other so should still work okay)
I totally dig this, sure beats my piece of shit sliding mechanism that's been broke for over a year now. But I don't have any of the tools to do this. So this will remain a funny fantasy for me.
Thanks man! Best advice i can give is buy those tools.. don't have to be expensive ones, but just enough so you can learn it yourself. I started out like that as well. You're never too old to learn✌🏻
@@Brochachichoppers While I agree with you, I definitely don't have the money for that bending metal contraption you've got. It's far less expensive and time consuming for me to find a shop that can do it.
Love this video. It's right to the point. My problem with this design, is that if a car is parked too close, I can't open my door.😢 is there a hinge design that would allow the door to pop out a bit, then slide up, with a similar motion as when it slides to the side??? Please make a video or send a link for some hinge designs that would make that possible.
You're talking about a Tesla style gullwing, which will take way more fabricating. The gullwing isn't very practical in crowded parking lots but it'll definitely get people's attention and probably a conversation or two.
Wow!!! You made it look so easy. Seems alignment of the door to set the hinges is obviously most critical. Could you place hinges before you remove the door to ensure perfect alignment? (That would mean the hinges would have to be mounted inward.,opposite of the way you did).
Hey brothers, great show!!!!did the white blocks in the door jam( alignment blocks) come from the factory??? And do you do anything to secure the bottom of the door for seal and to relieve the weight pressure on the door or just the factory door guide blocks??????
The guide blocks were in this originally. We did mount a temporary gate style slide latch on the inside to keep the door from rattling, but still working on a temp solution which will work with the original lock and handle
I converted my 3rd gen E350 to dually so this is a must. I am gonna attempt to use hood hinges and springs from a Ford truck since I have them in spades. If it does not work well I'll come back and kiss ass 😄😄
I have double cargo doors on the side. I want to weld them together and cut them in the lower third, so the smaller lower section will open like a tailgate and the top bigger section will open up like gullwing so I can side on the tailgate section. I need help?
I want to do gullwings on a car of mine, but I can't figure out the weathering side of things...overhead doors gonna need some rain channels and stuff. How does the van handle the rain?
I like this idea. Gonna do it on my 1992 Dodge Caravan. What did you end up doing for a door latch? I was thinking of getting a rear hatch door off another minivan and using the latch off that, but if you have a better idea, I'm all ears.
Hey man, thanks for watching! I don't know the specific details on the door and gutter, but the principle described in my video will work with every other make/model car.
We've used the rear latch only. In the front i temporarily mounted a bayonet lock to keep the door from rattling. I'll post up a video on more details asap. Thanks for watching!
those hinges wont last very long with all that weight. id rather use ones made for automotive use as they are more heavy duty than the the wooden door hinges your using other than that very informative
Thanks Paul! At first i was sceptical about these hinges as well. But after seeing other vans running them succesfully for a while it was my best/easiest option. Also, they're just a couple welds. If it doesn't hold up i can swap out a hinge.
No kit, i ordered all parts separately which are listed in the description. However customvanner.com sells a complete kit which will be similar to this setup

Really good video. I’ve a Bedford rascal that I keep thinking about doing the same.

I am doing this IN 1/24th scale guys!! Thanks for the info!
Awesome! Send us a pic through our social media channels when it's finished. Really curious how it's gonna turn out!
Nice job. That makes me rethink a sliding door van.
Been looking for a video on this subject for a while...

Love the video. How long are the struts?
Thank you! The struts are 850mm(app. 34inches) total length with a stroke of 400mm(app. 16inches)
How does it latch shut?
I want to to a 05 Honda Odyssey touring
Gullwing the sliders im having a lot of problems with electrical locks and cables
Great video on how you shaped the hinges. What length are the struts you used and how much weight can each handle.
Hi Phil, thanks for watching!
The struts are 900mm(35,5") long with a stroke of 400mm(15-3/4") they each have a capacity of 400n
Hey man this is great! What’s the length of the gas strut?
I’m not sure about the total length but the stroke is 15-3/4” (or 400mm)
Dude my buddy in 80s had a g20 van with a gull wing........we hated it.
thats supercool, do you think i could take my barn doors and scrap em and then find a junkyard gullwing in do this?
Definitely! The gullwing will be 1/4inch too wide but you can cut a little bit of the edge and make it fit

I have a question where do I buy the original hinges so I can put it on a 2000 Impala
And this works on any vehicle? Im thinkin bout doin this to a square body s10 blazer
Does the door still latch the same?
How does the door latch work
Im using the original latch, but only cut the front one off
Did you do anything to the latch?
I like this idea. Gonna do it on my 1992 Dodge Caravan. What did you end up doing for a door latch? I was thinking of getting a rear hatch door off another minivan and using the latch off that, but if you have a better idea, I'm all ears.
I planned on taking a latch out of a suburban tailgate. But never got to it and probably never will
Can this be done on a 99 safari GMC van
I have no experience with safari’s but i bet it’ll be just as easy.
What length are your struts??
How did you make the old sliding cover clear when opening door
We notched it on the top side
Hey mate, can the same method be followed on a VW Citi golf rear doors?
Please advice.
Nice vid.

Would you ever consider selling hinges?I have a chevy van and the dimensions should be the same.

How do you open it if a car is parked next to you or in your garage ?
You don't obviously lol
What latches the door to lock ?
The original door lock
Does it leak tho???
No, the original seals still work
How does the latch work
Kept the factory latch but Only latches at the rear now
How does the door latch shut
It still uses and operates the rear latch. I deleted the front latch.
