Clare Torry, the original vocalist during the recording of the album, was told only, by the band that she was to represent vocally and without words the five emotional stages one goes through when are dying. First, Denial, than Anger, Bargaining, Depression and finally Acceptance. She improvised this masterpiece in just two takes.
Yep. The producers didn't give him much information about what the recording was really about. I saw her interview many years later. She didn't know she would be part of a masterpiece.
Clare's mind-blowing performance of "Great Gig in the Sky" is on the album "Dark Side of the Moon." She set the mark to be topped by anybody who cared to try. This trio performed a wonderful rendition, as soul-stirring as Ms. Torry's so many years ago. Both versions are entirely captivating and beautiful.
The song of pain, being frightened and scared of death, fighting to stay and not accept the inevitable. Then it finally hits - submission to the inevitable that we all face - that's what it's saying to me. the journey within to find peace and acceptance. I have seen them live many times over the years, but I still get goosebumps and teary eyes - just like you - welcome to the Pink Floyd world.
The studio/Claire Torrey version is the best. It was a once in a lifetime performance that has still not been duplicated. That you must react to live when you hear it for the first time.
I love this version and no matter how many times I hear it I cry, it's just so beautiful. I love the original version for it's raw, spontaneous beauty, but this one is polished and just gets me deep in the heart every time.
agree. non-popular opinion: this is better than studio version. Especially the first woman and the second. The first is like anger, fear, fight etc. the second lady represents grief, sadness, crying for something, acceptance with the fate. they complement each other perfectly.
Absolutely, I guess for me it’s the visual effects as well, the voices are so powerful but being able to visualize their emotions just blows me over. To me this the best version, hands down!!!
This is a song about death and grief. As you notice as the song proceeds the absolute pain and shock slowly becomes acceptance and slow healing. BRILLIANT!
Hi Sabina just watched you and your reactions all three singers are wonder full Sam Brown was the first she had a big hit called stop but you should check out her with stay with me baby blows your mind unfortunately she now longer sing as she lost her voice and she couldn't hit the note any way love to see you and your reactions xx
Great reaction, Sabina. Pink Floyd has been my favorite band for over 50 years. You can't go wrong reacting to more songs from this great Pulse concert. All of them are stunning, but some have that extra glow: Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, Another Brick In The Wall, One Of These Days, and Run Like Hell. Hope you can get to them soon.
I was at the Knebworth 90 concert where Floyd headlined. No of us could work out who the extra female backing singer was. That was until she stepped forward and sang this. Yes it was Claire!
Great, great reaction to another iconic Pink Floyd performance. Thank you, thank you, Sabina! Dark Side of the Moon is best consumed in one full-course meal, but I know that's hard to do in a single reaction.
And if you want the whole meal live, you have to listen to Dream Theater .. no joke : Dream Theater - Full Concert (Dark Side of The Moon) 2005 Pink Floyd HD th-cam.com/video/cDcfdNxmVPQ/w-d-xo.html i think they do a great job here
My favorite band of all time and This was my fav concert of all time. Their stunning vocals taking u thru the stages of death without a word. Powerful and beautiful. Thanx much, Peace
So the first woman is the original artist on the album from the 1970s. The did the recording in two takes. "The Great Gig In The Sky" is slang for when you die and go to heaven. So what they asked her to do was express 3 emotions of what it would sound like if you were told you were going to die. "I am not frightened of dying, you know Any time will do, I don't mind Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime" First lyrics ( recording) of the song. 1 woman -expresses anger that she learns she is going to die (original singer on album) Clare Torry hence the red lighting of her anger. 2 woman - is expressing acceptance of knowing she will die and at the end of her vocals, you can her a woman say at 5:13 " I never said I was frightened of dying" 3 woman- Is at peace knowing she will die and is not afraid anymore

If you watch the Dark Side of the Rainbow, this is the song that plays when Dorothy gets scooped up and carried away by the tornado. She watches the farmhouse get ripped apart while the cranky old Miss Gulch morphs into the Wicked Witch.
Even going back far enough to where our ancestors had no words they could still communicate with all sorts of sounds expressing their personal desires. Many of us today could make it through a day without speaking one actually word by simply using sounds and motions. Even today, our names are just the sound we either agreed to or were trained to acknowledge. This (Claire Tory and Richard Wright) piece of art goes best when immediately following the song Time in my opinion, Try em together. Peace/JT
@sabina1118 Totally agree with this comment. The Great Gig was created ( not written or composed ) to end Time. Time slides into the Great Gig ( the end ) to finnish the message of side one.....The Dark Side of The Moon. Normally I recommend Pink Floyd live, but Time and The Great Gig are best enjoyed together as one song in 2 movements from the original recording......vinyl or CD. ORIGINAL is best......the remixes and digital destruction not only change the vibe and feel, they also alter and sometimes even remove the final brilliant vocal notes of passing. Should be noted that when Clare Torry sung those notes, she had no instructions, melody, lyrics or written music to follow........she made them up on the spot and in that instant in one take.
Another example of how Dark Side of the Moon was one of the first concept albums. This is an outstanding performance, but as others have pointed out, it's Clare Torry on the studio recording that is the one that is considered the best. To really get the full impact of Dark Side is to listen from beginning to end non-stop, laying back with headphones, and whatever will help you chill-lax.
Hello. This is a live version many many years after the album Dark Side Of The Moon was released. The singer, Clare Torry, created the incredible sound on the song. You're listening to somebody who is just copying the originator. Please listen to the original album version.
The studio version is amazing. One singer. That said, this is great. I love it when David stop playing, he turns and watch. Remember that those are technically backing singers. Pink Floyd put then in the spotlight in on of the best concert ever and one of the best song ever. What an opportunity for the ladies to shine, and shine they did.
Yup, that one gets me every time... David stops playing, puts the slide down, and just sits back and enjoys Claudia's singing just like he was another audience member
@@conan5885 Really, another kind of artist would have walked off stage to grab something to drink and relax. David stayed and watched respectfully. He has played the song countless times with countless people and still loves it. He also looks like the type who is very humble and respectful towards everybody.
this is a song about the stages of dying, 1. fighting 2. accepting 3. the end. The narration at the beginning talks about not being afraid to die (listen closely). Pink Floyd always tell a story, even without words.
Great to see you!! Love the red hair (redhead commenting lol) Missed your reactions. Admittedly I haven’t been on TH-cam as I once was but still great seeing you. Hope you are well 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻❤️
Great reaction Sabina!! Besides the original (with Clare Torry singing the entire thing) this is my favourite version!! This version from the Tour previous to the one you're doing is way better. Durga McBroom, the black singer in the middle, is on both tours, but the two other singers are different. Maybe you can do both back to back and do a comparison and poll? Also, it's essential that you review the studio version. Should probably have done it first. O.K. young lady, This is the first time on your channel.. This wonderful song is off of the best rock album ever--The Dark Side of the Moon. This masterpiece came out the year I got out of high school, 1973. Put your seat belt on these girls solo will wreck you.. No words -- just RAW emotions.. HINT--- near the end David stops playing his lap steel AND gazes at them!!!!! Is this great or what? Take care............... Stay safe!!!!!!
Sorry but never liked this version, they did the best with what they had but it took at least 2 to sing the part of what Clare Torry did all by herself. No one comes close to Clare Torry. Listen to the studio version which she did in two takes then watch her do it live here th-cam.com/video/VGX7RxsTNmo/w-d-xo.html Don't believe me watch what The Charismatic Voice has to say. th-cam.com/video/P5U7yb43xgM/w-d-xo.html
These young ladies certainly did a fine job with the musical performance. However, the original can never be duplicated. It was a unique once in a lifetime performance. Jus say'n.
When you were born!! Damn, The Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973, the year I graduated high school. Yea, I'm an old fart! I think this is the BEST rock album EVER!!!! And you selected this version, good job girl. David is playing a lap steel guitar. AND these ladies sing their guts OUT!! AND at 6:20 something David stops playing and just watches her finish singing!! SO powerful....... Pink is great!!!!! Peace to you! And Merry Christmas!!!!!! Take care and stay safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It does make sense!!! But I suggest you allow it to settle into you AND sleep on it. Pink is a tad heavy at times!! They did./do things no one else did or do!!! Greatest rock band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye...
The first vocalist in this video is Sam Brown. She has sung a lot on backing vocals with Harry Moore, George Harrison, Small Faces, Spandau Ballet, Adam Ant, Jon Lord (from Deep Purple), Pink Floyd, David Gilmore, The Firm, Doji and Nick Cave. Brown released her debut album Stop! in 1988, and in this regard, she released several studio albums, one live album, one EP and three compilations, as well as three albums as part of the Homespun band. In 2007, she had serious problems with her singing voice, after which she stopped recording and singing live. Sam founded a ukulele club in 2010 and has expanded to several clubs in Oxfordshire, Dorset, London and online that continue to thrive.
Hello Sabina your hair looks like great 😊 I saw Pink Floyd with this show in 1994 in Berlin it was absolutely outstanding. I am Floyd fan since 1977 for me one of the best group of all time
This version is not bad, but the original version with Clare Torry's vocals knocks this out of the ballpark! If you think this version is good, you've *got* to listen to the original version - it'll knock your socks off!
Hell Yeah!!!!!!!! I grew up listening to the Awesome Powerful Pink Floyd!!!!!!!!!!!! Takes me way back!!!!!!! Great Memories!!!!!!!! I'm 70 now Still Rock n Roll!!!!!!!!! On a Natural High!!! now , If u know what I mean, Ha!!
Totally get everything you were saying. You were rambling, but that's what PInk Floyd does. Their music is so profound and people just want to let out everything they discovered when hearing a song for the first time.
Yup, get exactly what you're saying. Wonderful to watch people enjoying Pink Floyd for the first time. I recommend you put on the headphones, stretch out somewhere comfortable, turn off the lights, and listen to Dark Side of the Moon start to finish without interruption.
Listen to the whole album THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON it's actually very SPIRITUAL and I do believe that they got that from the DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL it has to do with SPIRITUAL ASCENSION and the pyramid and the LIGHT SPECTRUM RAINBOW because we are SPIRITUAL RAINBOW WARRIORS. It is our CHAKRA COLORS.
You watched the wrong version of this song. Find "The dark side of the moon ", get your headphones, listen to the entire album... low lighting, wine, joint ...welcome to the 70s.❤✌
Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion and god, or as he called it.... "The Great Gig In The Sky" Results are legendary.
3 incredible backup singers = 1 Clare Torry improvising for an hour with just a few instructions from the band, she did 2 full takes and reportedly gave up on a third take saying in effect she'd already given it her all, she was paid £30 and she apologized thinking she didn't give them what they wanted. Didn't know they used her work until she saw the record in the store. Looking at the liner notes there was nothing about her contribution, when it really is half the song. It was on the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks. Some say that it represents the stages of dying. If you note the recorded voice of the man stating 'I'm not afraid of dying, why should I be, we've all got to go sometime...' From 2005: "Torry provided the improvised vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky, and was paid the standard fee of £30 for her work on January 23rd 1973. However, some thirty-one years later she claimed that she composed the song, and asked the High Court for monies she believed were due to her, a half-share of copyright ownership and a 50 per cent share, possibly worth millions, of past and future income. Torry said they (the band and EMI) had breached her copyright and asked for damages and for "all illicit copies of the song to be destroyed". This could have resulted in the album being withdrawn from sale temporarily. This week, the High Court judged on the side of Ms Torry, and have awarded her a half-share on copyright ownership of the song. The amount of the out-of-court settlement has not been disclosed, prompting much speculation as to the amount."

On the album this track follows "Time" which perhaps adds some context.
This is a window to when time runs out.

I love how Dave Gilmour just stops at the end and watches her, to enjoy the show himself.
I'm with you at that point that Dave Gillmore looks up you can see his appreciation it's a lovely moment

And she had to fight for it, but finally got a writing credit & "undisclosed sum" for her work on top of the original 30 pound session fee.
Unfortunately the vocalists since that have missed the mark

I've listened to this song since I bought Dark Side of the Moon in 1973 and I still get goose bumps. My favorite song of all time.
Clare Torry sung the whole vocal on her own. It took three singers here but brilliant job. The Pulse concert was simply perfection.
Clare recorded it in 2 takes and was paid £30! She did end up settling with Floyd for a wee bit more.

So the first woman is the original artist on the album from the 1970s. The did the recording in two takes. "The Great Gig In The Sky" is slang for when you die and go to heaven. So what they asked her to do was express 3 emotions of what it would sound like if you were told you were going to die.
"I am not frightened of dying, you know
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime" First lyrics ( recording) of the song.
1 woman -expresses anger that she learns she is going to die (original singer on album) Clare Torry hence the red lighting of her anger.
2 woman - is expressing acceptance of knowing she will die
and at the end of her vocals, you can her a woman say at 5:13 " I never said I was frightened of dying"
3 woman- Is at peace knowing she will die and is not afraid anymore
With that bit you said about communication... Check out "Keep Talking" from the same concert.
First singer is Sam Brown. - Look out for her singing 'Stop'
Powerful reaction - love the screen comments. Thank you…

This version from the Tour previous to the one you're doing is way better. Durga McBroom, the black singer in the middle, is on both tours, but the two other singers are different. Maybe you can do both back to back and do a comparison and poll? Also, it's essential that you review the studio version. Should probably have done it first.

I'll prob do a video with the other live version and the studio version also 😍
O.K. young lady,
This is the first time on your channel..
Sabina reacting to PF an automatic like. I recommend Echoes by David Gilmour Live in Gdańsk, the last collaboration he had with Richard Wright
Need to listen to the album from side A straight thru side B. I know you will love it. ❤❤❤
inner intelligence makes it close to me...just saying:)
Jus say'n.
The original version is WAY better.
Next: studio version. With headphones!!
Sorry. I'm not on Telegram.
Bye...
Yes please react to the original version of this song nothing can touch it.
Studio version first, please!!!
I'll have that on my to-do list now 🤩
As a rule, I think it’s always best to hear the studio version first, as the jumping off point.
Pink is known for breaking the rules!!!!! ENJOY......................
Awesome song great reaction thank you. This song is about accepting death and always makes me emotional. 🤟

Thank you so much!! and SAME!! Stunning track!
hi sabina, youshould react to PINK FLOYDS song SORROW from the pulse 94 concert, mind blowing
Richard Wright (piano) wrote the music.
No lyrics because:
"NO, woman!!!"
React to iron maiden senjutsu Sabina 🎸
Beautiful, but it can't match the raw power of the original voice... She did it in one take, solo.
"The Great Gig In The Sky"
Results are legendary.
If you note the recorded voice of the man stating 'I'm not afraid of dying, why should I be, we've all got to go sometime...'
From 2005: "Torry provided the improvised vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky, and was paid the standard fee of £30 for her work on January 23rd 1973.
You need to hear the original sung by Clare Torry.
I will! ❤️
@@sabina1118 It takes multiple singers in this version to do what Clare did by herself.
Thank you for not speaking over the performance
Stages of Death.....Transcending
Studio version faaaar surpasses this version.
Ironic you said "louder than words", that is the title of the last song by Pink Floyd
Your hair is fire and captivating like the song.
