How to Scissor Sweep Bigger Stronger Opponents in BJJ

  • The Power or Two-on-One scissors sweep is something I have been using for two decades against bigger stronger opponents. I got the idea from a De La Riva sweep on a standing opponent. You get a two on one grip on the sleeve and kick out the leg on the same side. I decided to try it with the scissors sweep and it instantly worked very well. Sometimes I call this the blast scissors sweep.

There was a time as a white belt when scissor sweeps felt almost impossible for me. (I'm a lil old man, 63 130lbs). I eventually could do them consistently enough to be promoted to blue belt, but it still felt difficult.
At some point after that I began to more easily do them. It often felt like as soon as I started my set up, my partner just went over, almost like they helped me. I'm convinced the key is the setup and timing, when it's right, the sweep is inevitable. Focus on the setup and "feel" for the timing, when they move or shift their weight reacting to me.
I'm starting to notice this more with other techniques also.

You are correct. Timing is the key, which is how I sweep black and brown belts. The first time I saw the scissors sweep was in the 90's and I thought it was the coolest thing. Because you start from the bottom and end up on top. There was no name for the technique back then. The instructor just showed it and we did it. Such a simple technique but very powerful when done at the right time. Thank you for your comment.

As simple as it looks never thought about this but I will try it today. Thanks for sharing.

The two on one is strong. If he smashes the knee shield though he looks like he's got a straight path to the back.

Yep, to help prevent your knee shield from getting smashed keep your knee up until you are ready to sweep. And if he does smash your knee down flex the foot of your knee shield leg to slow down his pass and give yourself time to recover.
