- Creating new WolfQuest 3 cliff terrain (and a preview of the new bighorns).
We are pleased to reach 10,000 TH-cam subscribers today! Thank you everyone, for spreading the word about WolfQuest and supporting the game.
This week, Tommi has been creating stranger wolf behaviors. Andrei has been setting up wolf customization. Susan has been researching secondary missions, and our new developer Zach has been working on multiplayer. I’ve been a bit obsessed with rocks.
One reason for our trip to Yellowstone was to see rocks up close and personal since, strangely, those are not common subjects of photography in Yellowstone. (Hmm, what else could people be taking pictures of?) The cliffs of Amethyst are made of conglomerate rock (formed from mudflows mixed with gravel stream deposits), along with some sandstone and siltstone. To create these cliffs, our rock artist Omar has created a number of repurposable cliff models. I then experimented with several shaders (which determines how light reflects off objects in a 3D environment) to find the best way to create the cliffs for the game. Today’s video shows that process.
One reason to put this effort into the cliffs (besides being a good challenge) is because these cliffs are the domain of the bighorn sheep, which was the top vote-getter in our February blog poll for a new animal to add to the game. We’ve partnered with Games-in-Motion, a 3D art firm in Slovakia, for many of our new game animals, and they just delivered the bighorn model, which is just as handsome as the elk and mule deer which they made for us last year. We will share more about the bighorn when we get the whole family animated.
In case you haven't heard, we are working on WolfQuest 3, which we plan to release as a free update to WQ 2.7 later in 2018 (no date yet!). Idea:for mountains, maybe make bighorn sheep more common there, they are good at climbing, and if they live in Asia they may be hunted by snow leopard (idk if they do or not) but Ik they live in mountains just like mountain goats,cougars,eagles,etc
The music from this game makes me so nostalgic. I remember late nights when I would sneak out on to my computer to play WolfQuest all night.

Seeing how far this game has come from the very first game to now, and you guys letting us peek into the design phase is incredible. It gives me a whole new appreciation for the game and all the hard work you do......and it is looking amazing!! Even though I'm in college now I'm so stoked to play this version XD

Oh my god, that looks amazing! And the bighorn sheep is the perfect animal to have roaming on those cliffs! Super excited for that, and I'm really happy with the way those cliff ledges look. Honestly, it blows me away to see how realistic and cool this game is becoming. The fact that y'all are putting that much time and effort into small details like how the rock faces look goes to show that you're trying to truly make WolfQuest 3 the best WQ version there ever has been.
Maybe the next video could be about the wolves and how they interact? Just a suggestion!😁❤🐺❤

When I first got wolfquest I had it on my tablet and had the graphics on fast so it did not lag and I just recently got wolf quest on my computer wich can handle fantastic and *oh my God* with how the graphics are now and you are making the graphics even better heck this won't even be a game. This will be a a tour to Yellowstone without driving keep up the good work and even if the game comes out in 2020 I'll still be here waiting (sorry for edit my auto-correct messed up some words)

Well, wolves can't scale rock faces so animals up there would be safe. But it would be fun to have more birdlife in the game. Maybe in the future?

The cliff controls were pretty finicky in 2.7
as morbid as it sounds, so do i! idk why, but i ALWAYS have to jump off a cliff in viddy games, it's like a weird urge i have every game i play

Yes! Rams, ewes, and lambs. They will be very hard to catch, since they stay up on the cliffs with the little ones.

I also have a few questions related to the update...
Will other predators be able to hunt down other animals? Or will we just witness them scavenging?
How WILL stranger wolves interact with our avatar? Do they obtain different personalities? If so, can I have some examples? Recalling back to the winter video and the laying positions, are they randomly generated or do we choose what position to lay in? How many positions are there? When we hunt, will there be sore thumbs out there? An example being, an injured elk limping?
I have so many other questions, but I’ll save that for another time ^_^

So I was watching wolf girl and I was confused when it said the sunset and sunrise update will probably not work on mobile this made me upset to see and please give me a heads up if anything else wont
We very much want to add a continuous day/night cycle, at least to the PC/Mac version of the game. It adds so much to immersion, and since our game levels last months, it’ll help convey that passage of time. And with the new lighting system we’re using, sunset and sunrise are just gorgeous. But there’s a good chance it just won’t work on mobile, and that (along with other factors) may well force is to split multiplayer into separate PC and mobile lobbies.

WOW. First seeing the cliff I thought it was already gorgeous, and then you went and made it even more beautiful and realistic with those details and textures. The time and effort you all spend on this is so wonderful. Whenever you release one of these videos I stop everything I’m doing to sit down and watch it. So excited for the updated game! I'm glad you're working on the shading and really pattern of the sheer mountains and cliffs that really excites me for Wolf Quest 3! But anyways I pretty much knew they're going to add bighorn sheep I mean they're such a really basic but really really good amethyst and slow Creek Mountain sort of animal with their big horns and their ruffy Hugh hooves!
Btw I love the cliffs soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much

So what texture resolution is that rock exactly? 2k? 4k? *gasp* 8k maybe? And do you know what the base texture resolution of the game will be yet? I have a really high end gaming pc and I'd love to see the game in 4k if you guys are making them that high rez!

The more videos you show the more excited I get for the new expansion / update! First of all I LOVE that you guys are still working on this beautiful game, as I've played it since 2008. Secondly you guys make me want to cry with how realistic you try to make it and all the detail and hard work you guys put into it. They plan on adding bison and, as for fish, wolves don’t fish often in Yellowstone for some reason! The bears do, though ;o

Oh, I wasn’t talking on my own authority ^_^” The game developer, Dave, has said in the past in one of their blogs on the forums that they considered adding fish but they learned that Yellowstone wolves don’t fish often. They themselves have said they won’t. Sorry, I should’ve clarified.
Duskflower is correct. It is interesting how animals specialize in different areas. We were surprised about fishing too -because what carnivore wouldn't want a nice, fat trout? But basically, predators will always look to expend the least effort for the most calories. The amount of energy needed to catch enough fish to feed your whole wolf family is not worth it compared to an elk feast that will sustain a pack for a week or so. Smaller, opportunistic predators like coyotes might consider fishing worth their time if easier meals are not available.
The salmon runs in the Pacific NW are different because they are super easy meals in great quantity (but only last for a short amount of time so not a reliable source). So if you are a wolf in Alaska, you wouldn't say no to a few weeks at the salmon buffet. So a lot of photos of wolves eating fish are from that area.
But if you are a wolf in Yellowstone where the big fish are few and far between, you probably wouldn't bother taking the time to fish. Players, of course, might find it fun to try but then we'd have to build all sorts of new animations for something that really isn't integral to wolf life in Yellowstone.

The graphics started out average to me, and currently are. But they are becoming so detailed and well done that I'd say they will be much better than most games when the update comes. Graphics are important to me, as they make the world look more immersive and realistic, which I think is very important for this game. It really does look like Yellowstone now, and I cannot wait until this update comes! C:

I don't think you can add every single animal in Yellowstone, But here is a list of all of the animals I know: Elk, Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Wolf,american bison, bears, Canada, lynx, Coyote, Cougar, bobcat red-fox,mountain goat, mule deer, american black bear, prong horn, grizzly bear ,white tailed deer ,badger, frogs, long tailed weasel, marten ,north american river otter, stoat, wolverine, bird's and reptiles. If you did add all of the animal's, then the game would probably crash. The animal's in the game are good enough, so thank you so much for the wonderful game!
I learned so much from this game! I learned so much about the wolf life and everything else it's amazing how you guys actually explore the mountains so you could create the game it takes a lot of effort and y'all guys need a lot of support I've been playing this game since it was realised and....it's just AMAZING ! No matter how many times I play it I won't get bored and I'm totally in love with this game,it's amazing and realistic! Its so impressive how the game changed so much since it came out! To be honest....this game gives me life I love it!!!! I vote this game 100000000000000000/10

Hey Wolfquest, will there be a better puppy number generator like thing where you won't always have the same number of puppies (4)? Maybe you will have 2 or maybe you will have 6! That would be cool and more realistic and exciting. You could even do it based on difficulty. If you were on pretty easy you could have 1-3 and it just goes up from there. From 1-3 to 2-4 to 3-5 and finally from 4-6! Or just completely random and you either have a few puppies survive or not. 😁

Wolves don’t fish much in Yellowstone but they’d certainly be a cute ambient creature!
They will be adding a frog. Not sure of any other small critters.
I have a feeling that mountain lions will like these cliffs as well!

Bighorn sheep cool it's gonna be hard to catch em Though so maybe in the future we can get pumaquest or cougarquest were we can play as a cougar and pounce on prey and if your a female you can raise cubs if your male then you dont get to that would be awesome

I know you guys just added the big horn sheep, which is amaaazing! One idea for the bighorn sheep though is to possibly give them offspring. Like just having the babies walk around with their parents and such, and maybe even give the parents defense characteristics for their young. Idk just an idea, keep up the amazing work!

When I saw the bighorn sheep I freaked out. Wolfquest heard our howls for adding goats and they responded positively!!!!!!!!
Also don't get me wrong but since our alpha wolf ( the lead developer ) is obsessed with cliffs, why not add new cliff mechanics? Like tripping or gaining something like a speed boost whenever your run down a cliff? Oh and adding cliffs could also mean your could add new damage animations, like breaking legs or scratching your paw. Well I don't think wolves are that dump to run off a cliff like crazy to chase a goat but.....humans are! XD
We will make the cliffs as realistic and interesting as our time and budget allows for programming and animations. :)

Well, we are sure a geologist could easily explain that- what kind of rock it is, how it was formed, and how it has weathered over time. We do know that it it looks pretty cool!

I've been devoted to this game for many, many years, and I am so incredibly happy that it hasn't died out, and that is it continuously developing! I remember way back when, in multiplayer in the Creek when you'd go near the lone tree you'd levitate off of the ground, I also remember being able to press K and then J while running to slide. I was into wolves even as a young child, and I have so many amazing nostalgic memories involving Wolf Quest, and I am so excited for Tower Fall, and I am so excited for the Anniversary Edition. Keep up the fantastic work!

Just wondering, Are you gonna add more things, accessories, like spiked collars or .. like one of those things that keeps dogs from barking. Or a missing leg. Anddd, any new wolf skins? If sooo. Id really like an update on that :3
Any customization would have to be realistic for wild Yellowstone wolves. (Missing limbs would mean a very short life in the wild.) WQ3 will not have additional coats, but we know that many players would like more and are considering options to add more in the future.

God I loved this game the music was super unique and gave the game a super good vibe. I just wished there was more to it. Like water and other animals and behaviors and now... we are getting it?! I ask you please... take your time and make the game great. But also hurry up because I want to play, take my money already.
