Guimarães (or Guimaraes, 2024) is a city in the district of Braga in the North of Portugal. Originally the city was known as Vimaranes when it was founded in the 9th century AD. Guimarães has a population of 153,000. Some highlights of Guimarães are the historic centre, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, the Largo do Toural Square with the Basilica of St. Peter, the Oliveira Square and the Church and the Medieval Castle of Guimarães.
