I first heard it may be half a century ago. On All India Radio. The sound technology then and now is vastly different. Plus cynicism and biology try to hug each other as they advance together! But my increased cynicism and degraded biological state has not diminished by an iota my facination and admiration for the woman! ..... Hirabai Barodekar was a woman of many parts. A caring, soft-spoken head of a large family, a versatile theatre personality, a Raagdari vocalist of the first order, an exponent and a tutor of Indian Classical Music like no other. I was always intrigued by her personality. There is body-language in our day-to-day affairs. We read it without any written script. Similarly a performing artist speaks and reveals his psyche through voice modulations, inflections, decibel manipulations, gesticulations, grimaces, etc.In Hirabai's case, gesticulations and grimaces were conspicuously absent. But the way she grabbed and took hold of the whole gamut.of nuances of Indian Classical Music was bewildering. The nearest comparison which comes to my mind is J. K. Rowling! A house-wife turning into a versatile author, with a hold on the English language so complete that she earned the sobriquet of being reborn as Charles Dickens! ....The caring and soft-spoken matriarchal head of the family spewed out defiance, rebellion and, oddly enough, stoicism, in some of her Taanas and notations.Such hidden force was unleashed at these moments that the whole ambience (including the audience) was churned up as if in a Large Hadron Collider at CERN! .....I had a discerning member in my Phoenix Library many years ago. His name was Hari Dhamdhere. An LPG distributor. He was murdered in Pune while watching TV. He corroborated me on my feelings about Hirabai's latent inclinations of defiance, rebellion and, at times, of aggresion. He even admitted that his hair stood on it's end while hearing some of the Raagas of Hirabai and others! One other conniesure of Indian Classical Music was Mr Alurkar on Karvre Road. He was also a Phoenix member. He,too, was murdered near his cassette shop. Both the murders remain unsolved to this day (21- 4 - 2018). At 85, I am still hanging around the earth, clinging to Indian Classical Music and Dance!...... ....Let me add a Post Script before you tube disables me!(In their restructuring, you tube is putting the comment-writer in a strait-jacket!
