Pinned post for Q&A :)
Could you tell us about the French capture of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder with Cavalry?
Considering that the panzerschiffs were slow enough to be chased down by literally every WWII-era fast battleship and were slower than Hood and the Renowns even when they first entered service, would you argue they were far too slow to be effective cruisers from the start?
Q&A: if the USN did not go through with building Alaska, Guam or Hawaii do you think that one of or both the remaining Iowa-class ships would have been finished and if so do you think they would have made it to the 80s like their sisters or scrapped before hand?
Did the british have any plans to use the 24.5 inch torpedoes on anything other then Nelson and Rodney?
A personal question for Drach.
If you could pick a time period to go back to, which would you choose? I assume it would be between the years covered on your channel, but if narrowed down, which is your favorite?
Would like to see a video on "Swedish under-mountain naval bases"
Yes yes, Oh God yes!
Not going to happen as those are still in use and classified secret.
They are even edited out of civilian maps and are supposed to be edited out of the google maps public version satelite and street view photos.
"What" Swedish under mountain naval bases? /s
I would also like to see that, as well as the development of those
That would be the Muskö tunnels
Fun to see Swedish ships. Would be fun to se some videos about Swedish naval technology, like tropedoes, gun performance and range finding
Yes! Very much yes!
Slight Spoiler, they we're ahead.
Yes! Very much yes!
This current lineup of videos on the Swedish navy makes me immensly happy.
Nice! Another video about Swedish warships. Thank you! I have a suggestion. A Wednesday Rum Ration video about the Psilander Affair. The story about the two pairs of destroyers Psilander and Puke (pronounced Pu-ke), large, and Romolus and Remus, small, that Sweden bought from Italy in 1940 and their arduous journey home is a story worth to be told. My uncle was part of the crew of one of the ships. I don't know which one of them he served aboard when the Royal Navy boarded them without probable cause. These four destroyers adventures on their journey home is a very interesting story that is worth to be told...
I'd watch that
I'd watch that
Drach you got to be the most consistent creator out there and all high end top quality content every single time ! Almost seems wrong for this to be free
You could always chip in!
Ssshhhh.
You could always chip in!
I love how the images in this episode and the previous show the fully-enclosed nature of the superstructure and the shipyard. To me this speaks volumes about the weather both are meant to remain functional in.
Tack! One can always count on you for absolutely great content. An now about the Swedish Navy! How cool!
BTW, I live in the town of the Muskö naval base. The one inside the granite island.
Here is a non-secret:
It is absolutely huge inside. Even has it’s own hospital. The island is quite hollow. And the only road access is through an underwater tunnel.
Keep it up man!
Thanks Drach! On Saturday morning, a cup of coffee and a new video from you is the best part of the week!
Very nice ships and very adapted for their environments.
Never learned so much about the Swedish navy. Cool thanks
Nice you go through these, very interesting ships and unique..
There is a pattern here - Swedish destroyers of the period appear to have been rather sensible designs fit for the task they'd been built for.
The Volvos of the Sea.
The advantage of being entirely focused on defence on a regional scale. The drawback of such specialised ships is that they become increasingly unsuited to alternate tasks. Became a real issue from 1982 onward when the last destroyers were taken out of service and the problem is still ongoing today.

Whenever I'm bored with my usual TH-cam feed, I can always come back to your channel for something good to watch.
Thanks!
Rather beautiful and elegant Destroyers.
Can confirm that J17/F17 never had a helicopter pad, and no such conversion was discussed. There was however a discussion of making her a museum ship but in the end that was deemed to expensive.
Öland and Uppland had the separate 4 inch flare rocket launcher removed by 1972 which left the aft deck clean, but no heli-pad. Halland on the other hand had the aft flare launcher replaced by a helicopter pad in 1963. (source Svenska Jagare by Lars Carlbom)
Fast and capable. Such a pretty patrol destroyer.
Bofors, as soon as you started to describe the auto gun I knew it would be Bofor. Not sure if I am spelling that right but they are an amazing company for their designs. Would like to see a report on them.
The most relevant detail in this video, of course, is that they were Swedish.
@@simongeard4824 Which to me means coooool.
Missing an "s" at the end of Bofors.
@@Vonstab Dam forgot an s for Sweden
Nice Drach, very informative again man !!
And another great start to my weekend . How about doing a video on the prewar U.S. Coast Guard ships that served thru WWII ? I think you and your veiwers would be pleasantly surprised .
Years ago Swedish destroyers where great in WoWs!
First Kalmar and now Öland... Just like home (i am born and live there). Interesting to hear how many ships that we had and to see how few that were saved as museum pieces.
These Swedish navy ships are very enjoyable. I hope there are other less well known navies that we can learn about.
I just wanted to add: They were really quite beautiful ships.
Thank you
Gotta love ships with their own railways.
They're for rapid deployment of a line of mines.
Elegant.
Thanks Drac, I HAD to google "Swedish under-mountain naval base"
My Dad did his service on HMS Uppland(J17), the sister ship to HMS Öland(J16). I actually have the original Telegraf key of HMS Öland on my desk! :)
It's been interesting to see the histories of smaller navies. Would you consider doing a video on LÉ Macha (formerly HMS Borage), or other ships of the Irish Naval Service.
Very pretty little ships. The twin dual purpose automatics are a formidable destroyer armament too.
I definitely support this style of covering the smaller navies, and hope we see some more!
Love the videos....."Blink Twice if you need rescue from Sweden". 😀
Right on.
Very interesting video.
Please do one on the Italian torpedoboat and destroyer Sweden bought in the late '30s.
Certainly was a real good looking Ship.
In their original form, these were real badass looking ships
For whatever it's worth, you pronounce the letter Ö as the 'Ea' in "Earth" and "Earl" (and like the 'e' in "stern").
Whatever else there is to say about Swedish warships, you can be sure the cabins were stylishly, yet affordably furnished.
Great video Drach!
Calling all cadets! Let’s get Drach to a million subs! When you like 👍 + comment (even just an emoji) and save to playlist the algos promote the channel. All hands on deck!
Very nice
Hi all😊
Pt 2 of asking for a review of the sweden class coastal defence battleship's
th-cam.com/video/Gkh2vse-KVM/w-d-xo.html already been done half a decade ago
@Groza_Dallocort damn, im just slow then 😆
Maybe do guides on naval bases... They will not be 5mins or so but they would be cool. Especially the likes of Portsmouth
👍👍
In the pictures of the ships at the end of the video, there are several long, thin objects on the outside of the turrets; what are those? Rails for launching rockets? They don't appear on earlier photos, so they must be something added during a refit.
According to a naval encyclopedia entry on the class, they are for rocket-launched flares, presumably in lieu of firing star shells from the guns.
Please do a video about Swedish Cruisers. The last ones were 'Tre Kronor-class' cruiser. Or why not the quite numerous Monitors that were built?
Drach already have videos on the Tre Kronor and Gotland.
Plus I would love to see ones on Sverge class Coastal Defense Ships if that has not been done.
@@Vonstab
Cool, I'll look for it.
@IRLangmaid25 The Sverige-class got a video pretty early on, number 54 IIRC.
You would think they would get a boost in other areas in exchange for a very limited range. I doubt they were expected to sail very far.
Does 2000 nautical miles qualify as very limited range?
The post war 40mm/70 M54 had 1 1/2 to 2 x the rof (240 rpm cyclic v 120-160) of the prewar 40mm/56 M36.
When did the world find out this class’s 120 mm had twice the rate of fire (20 versus 10 rpm/ barrel) of the earlier cannon? One wonders if the initial reaction was those “‘land class destroyers are under gunned with only four tubes?” In essence these ships had 8 guns albeit vulnerable to 2 hits. But in a fire fight the first few minutes could be decisive.
this class of Destroyers just looks like they want to go fast, even sitting still they look racy as can be "a fast ship ready to go In Harms Way"
Psilander Affair if you have not done it already!
Well, along with my cup of coffee, I could read "news" about Trump renaming Canada or watch Drach. Easy choice.
Oh, don't get the few rational members of the USA started on this topic. We're doing our best to survive until 2026...
@@davidg3944 there's plenty of us, problem is there are even more who barely follow politics and will vote for who appears better on camera and not who is a better public servant.
Yes, read the coffee and listen to Drach!
@ I tried reading tea leaves once, all it got me was getting tossed into Boston Harbor. But at least I got a close look at the USS Constitution!
I would love to know what the light railway on the deck was for. I thought it could be mines or depth charges to start with but you mention that they were released through the stern rather than from the deck
Would you do a series on fleet tugs.
Do Jägaren småland !
I'm sad that the 'Hallands' fall out side of Drach's era limit of 1950. 😢 His analysis would be most interesting...
Still hoping for a video on SMS Frauenlob,
A handsome ship, curious what you'll have to say about their successors (presuming that video's not already been posted).
😃👍
From 4:35 the photos you used seems to show some kind of odd attachments to the 120mm turrets - rocket launchers? Any ideas as to what these were?
Rails for rockets, mainly used for illumination but eventually a whole bunch of different rockets were developed including chaff and other counter measures.
I guess the bow 40mm was more to serve as a bow chaser against enemy torpedo boats than as an AA gun
Öland class was great ships the Halland was better and the Östergötland was a misstake as they reverted to Öland hulls to get 4 destroyers instead of 3 if a Halland derivative had been built.
The Lappland calss was cancelled and finished for Columbia being HAlland class with 3 12cm turrets saving weight reducing all other armament.
At 2:10 what would the track system on the deck be used for?
Mines.
@@Vonstab makes sense, thanks
4:34 what are the tubes on the side of the turret?
Rocket launchers.
On the photos of the post war refits... whats the tubes/barrels that are seemingly attached to either side of the main turrets?
Rocket launchers.
According to a naval encyclopedia entry on the class, they are for rocket-launched flares, presumably in lieu of firing star shells from the guns.
There weapons are really cool. Would love to have Swedish rifle.
ÅÄÖ the leters in the Swedish alphabet. invented to give other pepole trouble. :)
We seem to be working through WoWS European DD line ...
Hopefully we discuss their Paper ships!
Is this that really good Swedish DD that you can’t get unless you buy out one of the big “all ships in these boxes if you spend a few thousand”?
Listening to a guy spend nearly $3k to get it in discord was my moment of clarity to quit the game.
@@piedpiper1172 no it's just in the tech tree. it takes a while (tier VIII) but doesn't require any microtransactions
@ ah. Which one was it that was premium? Ragnar or some such?
It’s been a few years.
Gaijin is slacking on adding Sweedish navy to War Thunder.
(not very shocking)
Good morning, do you think it’s is possible you could cover the mechanics of the iron clad and early pre drednought era, such as how the guns we’re loaded etc.
Sigh. Four bots reported, not that it does a lick of good.
So much more money could have been received by selling these off to South America or Africa...either would have been overjoyed to aquire them.
🚢 ⚓️ 🛳 🔱
As The Stranglers so memorably wrote: 'Let me tell you about Sweden. Only country where the clouds are interesting...'
Actually that was quite interesting but now we will want a comprehensive series covering the WW2 era Swiss Navy.. ;-)
More pre-dreadnoughts and ironclads please.
Does it come with Swedish fish...? I'll see myself out.
Only 60 mines!
Are you sure this is a Swedish ship😅
Another swedish destroyer, probably with mines.
