When you think about it he's lost both his children (Jane and Christian Gibbons, his wards), most of his pull with the army , a sizeable fortune by having the South Essex broken up, no wife or mistress and a favored posting in India essentially growing drugs. Then he gets stripped and sunstroke.
      Have to admit, that hurts.

I love how they ended Simmerson. In the same way someone (Sharpe) born in a gutter can rise in station through bravery and skill, someone raised with silver spoon and taught to have distain for anything below him can rise as a person, and with a bit of trauma and tragedy (and touch of heat stroke) he can learn at least the first little bits of compassion and good humor.
Sharpe is all about how anyone can end up anywhere because of circumstance of birth, and you can have brave or cowardly officers, pious or perfidious priests, dutiful or derelicting soldiers, and that even in a time of great social immobility, it should never stop you trying from doing the best you can, and being the best you can too.

He had a great character arch when you think about it. Furthermore, that "Quite so, quite so" in reference to we all make mistakes? That says much more than you'd expect. Simmerson is basically referring to the things he himself did in the past toward Sharpe, and he's accepting that Sharpe's apparent hatred of him.... is his doing.

Anyone else feel there was quite a unique way Sharpe looked back in this? Notice how in most, if not all the endings of the episodes, he had a tendency to look back at some point.
But the story, and expression on his face told me it was him taking 1 final look back as a way of wishing the audience a farewell, as the final episode of the whole Sharpe series.

    • @talavera9515
      @talavera9515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I agree, this one is different and slightly more heavyweight, if that makes sense. He actually looks straight into the camera for a micro-second, which made me jump.
There's a case for saying that as well as Sharpe's farewell this is _Sean_ looking back and saying goodbye, though of course this wasn't the last scene he filmed. (That was "trying to hang Barabbas".)

Diehard Sharpe fans can meet his son Henri Patrick Lassan, a French cavalry officer, who serves as an envoy for France in America, 1861-2, in the 4 book series about Nathaniel Starbuck. Nate is befriended by Patrick, as he calls himself, and rides with him over Confederate lines during Seven Pines. Although Sharpe is not mentioned by name, Patrick gives enough information about himself so that you KNOW he is Sharpe’s son. He even carries Sharpe’s sword and speaks of his parents briefly. He is a major figure in the last quarter of the book Copperhead, and appears as a minor character in the preceding book Bull Run.

His son in America would be about the same age as Sharpe is in India. By my reckoning, he was born about 1777.
I like how he lands up where we first met him in the books. And where he really saved Wellesleys life and was made ensign being he was a sergeant in the 33rd.
Transferred to the 74th and a temporary Royal Marine at Trafalgar before joining the 95th.

The one Sharpe episode I've never seen, more's the pity. I had the pleasure of meeting Bernard Cornwell at a book signing oh, 17-18 years ago. Pete Postlethwaite had just died, and Mr. Cornwell said that his character, Sgt. Obadiah Hakeswell, had been a pleasure to write about - a real good old-fashioned villan with redeeming qualities whatsoever - or words to that effect. Pete was a wonderful character actor, and I've seen him in other roles very different from Obadiah Hakeswell. He always did a terrific job. Sharpe went on to several other new adventures, and the world of the villainous being what it is, there were no shortage who had it in for Sharpe. All of the memorable ongoing characters in the series were well done (including John Tams as Hagman, of course) and whether in the novels or in the television series, Sharpe and Mr. Cornwell have provide many, many hours of wonderful entertainment. Many thanks to you all.

Ioann Gruffaud (or however that Welsh name is spelled) was an excellent choice for young Hornblower. I believe he got the part from his bit role in James Cameron's "Titanic," in which he piloted a lifeboat among the victims looking for survivors.

The hero we didn’t know we all needed for so many episodes and edits. Now that’s just not soldiering but also being amazing.
Truly, thank you to those who have worked on these videos for all of us and to those who feel it is over now, come back and ride the ride again. Live memory lane a bit and maybe, just maybe, we will see more of each other and Sharpe again (how I don’t know but maybe lol)
To Sharpe, his Chosen Men, to all the other characters and women he has loved, go off thinking of Sharpe’s song in the form of Hagman’s voice.

Absolutely outstanding story and program. I always was amazed at the number of great actors that appeared in this series. Sean Bean went on to bigger and better things...but he will always be Sharpe to me.
