There’s actually lots they can fix or upgrade. For instance: we still can’t add inventory slots to our exocraft. We still can’t (console player) go back to previous expeditions to catch up / play the early ones (1-7). They still haven’t fixed terrain regenerating inside your base after you remove it. They could expand the storage of the nutrient processor. If nothing else simply increasing stack size for stored items. I highly suspect vault storage could be expanded again. Those are just high level quick things. They could also offer an “upgrade” to storage containers for gas / mineral extraction. To take the capacity on the supply depot container to anything higher than 1000. This would be super easy to do. Portable refiner 3.0 where you could actually use it as a portable “large” refiner. There’s.. LOTS.. they could tweak, add, etc.
They could also fix freighter bases being a massive trap. To easy to get trapped in the geometry not to mention that Agriculture Rooms absolutely tank your performance as well. Hell, as of right now, for like the past 14 hours the game has been throwing up false flags to malwarebytes about one of the IPs it connects to for its multiplayer discovery services.
I believe a few years after LNF they will backport multi biome planets to NMS. Or maybe they will release a NMS 2 based on their learnings from LNF. Imagine trillions of habitated planets with different biomes and cultures.
I would be happy if the next update was the last and included a new cruiser class of ship between freighters and fighters making space battles fully modular, underground habitats and proper rivers erosion and waterfalls, i would be happy if that was it
Integrating the Expeditions into the main game as permanent, replayable content , Each expedition brings unique quests, challenges, and rewards ... that would be cool
NMS has been an amazing journey for me and as a newer player I'm amazed you guys have been playing this for years. I have so much fun staying up late hyperdriving to some distant system.
No Mans Sky is not server based so it never has to end Fortunately. But they may stop further updates eventually and just leave us with the masterpiece and beautiful memories.
Nah, '25 will be the last focused year perhaps, but they'll never stop updating it for years to come. For as long as people play it in numbers, they will always keep some people on top of it. Not to mention, the whole reason they are bringing it up to spec (imho) with the LNF engine tells me they are planning for ease of creation so it won't be much of an issue to hop over to the NMS studio and whip out some content.
Big mistake to move away from the space genre. They will not do it after learning so much. If they wanted to they could make a game that would put all the others to shame and make it last 20 years minimum.
Whatever the fate of NMS, Hello Games has a bright future ahead of it and will be a welcome replacement to floundering triple A studios! The forest is burning down, allowing for new growth to flourish and fertilising the earth with discarded ideas, IPs and character designs that can be readapted and reused I second MikeUK's position of more ship customisation

This means that resources have already been split between NMS and LNF for at least the past year. So if they basically keep the resources allocated to NMS and LNF the same, I could see both games doing fine.
Definitely a lot of things can still be done to keep making the game better. I think hello games using no man's sky to help progress the development of light no fire. Learning things that work and what won't to make another successful game.
i have a minor theory, what if we're only halfway through the lifespan of NMS. what if the whole end of the Atlas tiimeframe is their plan. what if the game is only panned to get updates and stuff for the 16 years the Atlas has. so 8 years down, 8 to go.

Game was originally mostly developed by a team of 6 that extended to 12. Pretty sure HG is now a team of 50ish people - So they'll definitely have the people for it especially as they like small teams on games 😁 Also, game makes them too much money for them to stop. Pretty sure they want this up there with the likes of Minecraft
Sry but I don't understand why everyone is so hyped up for light no fire it doesn't look that great nor that different than no mans sky it looks pretty much like the same game but I guess that doesn't matter when all the call of duty fans rebuy the same games every year they just changed the sprites and guns etc. that's and example and I feel they did that with light no fire
You‘ve pointed at the exact reason everyone is excited - it looks exactly like NMS! - But it‘s not SciFi but Fantasy. So a Fantasy game that plays, feels and has the quality of NMS. That sounds pretty exciting to me.

Interesting that you point to minecraft (2009) as being old, but don't mentioning Eve-online (May 6, 2003) that are MUCH older and still going.

I personally don't believe the team is big enough for Both games. Light no fire will most likely have bugs and require the teams entire focus
