Building a Kit // Selection Process
RTS Scrapbooking
1. INSPIRATION PIECE
: select an inspiration piece of anything you wish
: this can be a piece of paper, 6x6 paper pad, ephemera pack,
sticker sheet, embellishment or just a color combination)
: take note of the mood & feel (theme) of this inspiration
piece as well as colors, motifs and what project do you have
in mind
: if you need help picking items for a kit, use something like
Scrap Spin or ask a fellow scrapper to give you supply choices-
FUN!
2. PATTERN PAPERS
: pick papers in your style, your favorites, and in different shades
and scale
: challenge yourself to try new patterns, new colors, bold papers,
etc.
: don’t worry about colors being matchy-matchy
: mix ivory and white - it is ALL pretty!
3. CARDSTOCK
: if you use cardstock for backgrounds, select a variety
: challenge yourself to use what you have
: if you use pattern papers for backgrounds, perhaps pick
cardstock for
matting photos, matting entire layout, die-cutting and punches
4. SPECIALTY PAPERS
: look at those special papers you put aside; the time to use them
is now
: consider foil, glitter, vellum, canvas, burlap, cork, corrugated, die
cut papers
5. SCRAPS
: adding just a few scraps when building a kit helps to use your
scraps and helps adding in additional patterns and colors in
different sizes
6. NEW & OLD PRODUCT
: no longer look at supplies being new vs. old- mix it ALL together
and just PLAY!
: no more ‘saving for the perfect photo/story’- right now is
the ‘perfect’ time
7. FOCUS PRODUCT
: what supply do you have a lot of, or haven’t use for a long time,
or what supply gets neglected and overlooked- time to add in
some of that product
8. ALPHAS
: include a variety of colors, fonts, dimension and sizes
9. TOOLS
: select ANY tool that will fit your theme, mood&feel, style
: select new or old tool- just PLAY
: if you can’t add took to kit- simply make notes and include note
to kit
10. STICKERS, DIECUTS & CHIPBOARD
: look for items that have colors and motifs that fit your kit
: don’t worry if all the items will work in kit- that is not the objective
: TIP- foam tape is a great way to add dimension to any flat item
11. EMBELLISHMENTS
: no wrong way to do this step- add a variety and anything you
want to include
: also include a variety of dimension (lump & bump) if that is your
style
12. EXTRA ELEMENTS
: if you have a specific project in mind, be sure to include those
themed or particular elements when building kit
(example: masculine, Disney, sports, baby, beach….etc.)
13. INSPIRATION
: look at sketches, sketchbooks, Pinterest, challenges, and classes
: consider the ones you already purchased- put them to work
: make note of this inspiration and include in kit for quick reference
14. STORAGE
: will you be using this kit at home or at crops (traveling)
: consider WHERE you will use this in order to decide HOW to
store kits
: no wrong way- just whatever works for you and your space
: there is no time limit or requirement to how long you play/store
your kit
15. PHOTOS
: don’t worry about what photos you will be documenting at
this point
: if you have a particular event in mind, definitely let those
photos help dictate your choosing of supplies
: our lives are filled with color so there will always be photos
that work!
: it always seems to work out -do not stress over that aspect
16. NO RULES
: this is just ‘my’ selection process
: add or delete to this list and make it your own
: there are NO RULES - just have FUN and RECORD the STORY!
