Now that's what I call a niche. He was indeed in a hard situation, people like to criticise Hua Guofeng, but I don't think anybody would have easy time in his place.

Also please remember one thing - he had to balance between extremely divided party, there was no way to satisfy everybody and yet he tried. At least Deng let him retire with all honours.

I mainly made this video because the idea of people being confused by it amused me. I don’t think anyone expected there to be enough content for a two-hour playlist of songs about Hua Guofeng and yet here we are.

This is amazing! From the titles, it seems to me that they rushed in to quickly exchange the monosyllabic name of Mao to Hua to pour in some reassuring songs about the leaders' likeness to the masses. I would have never imagined that there would be 2 hours of material available from those 2 weird years though. Thank you so much!

I think there would have also been great economic growth under Hua Guofeng, he would have inherited a country that was educated with a high level of expectancy(Life expectancy went from 35 to 65 during the mao era) . The groundwork has been established. Surprised there is enough music for a two hour vid.

China’s forgotten Chairman who was Mao’s officially designated successor who reigned supreme from Mao’s death in 1976 to 1978 when a coalition led by Deng Xiaoping ousted him in pursuit of economic reform rather than Hua’s ‘whatever Mao did we do’ policy. History could have been quite different had Hua been a more competent politician as he lived until 2008. Deng Xiaoping became so powerful instead of Hua Guofeng that it was Deng who selected Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao to replace him, each would be given ten years in charge, Jiang trying to extend his de-facto rule Post-2002 and failing.

Mao put Hua on the seat of chairman in the hope that he, as one of the party apparatus benefitted heavily from Cultural revolution(during which he got rocket promoted), would compromise with the radical lefts(i.e. gang of four & others) in return for their support to keep his seat as the supreme leader safe from the rightists who are still powerful in the party .
Hua however, made the stupid choice to cooperate with the rightists to oust the left wing of the party, thus breaking the balance of power Mao expected, and paving the way for the rightists to oust him two years after.

The Yugoslav recording is from Hua Guofeng’s visit to Yugoslavia in 1978. It’s a performance of what is the song most associated with Hua, which you can find at 4:15 here. It’s at this meeting that Tito learned that Mao had actually thought Yugoslavia was in the right in the Tito-Stalin split, but he kept quiet due to the strong Sino-Soviet relations at the time.
The Yanbian song seems to be something of a follow-up to “The People of Yanbian Love Chairman Mao”.
