  • Raw footage of Queen Street West in Toronto, spring 1986. Natural street sound. Back when the neighbourhood was still funky, before gentrification. Released into the public domain. If you use it in another production just give me a credit, thanks. Everyone else - enjoy the show!

Edward's Books, Silver Snail, Bakka, Dragon Lady, Pages Book Store... all within a few blocks of each other. Plus record stores, plus live music venues, plus clothing shops, restaurants and more. What a stretch of arts and culture. Was so lucky to experience it!

Every year that goes by, chips away more and more of Toronto's character and soul.

Lara Brooks: that reminds me, The Rivoli had about the BEST coffee I ever tasted....don't know what blend, but I think they ground the beans for every order....

Used to shop on Queen West back in the late 80’s. I would spend ages in About books, and in the crystal shop called Zephyr. Great to see scenes of old Queen West. Thanks for posting!

I miss the silver jewelry carts , there was one woman who hand made earrings with coloured stones. They were so pretty and unique.

Yes. The way I look at it, all the various aspects of Canadian life and society - and I could name a hundred - peaked at different times. But in my view they all peaked between 1980 and 2005. If I had to pick a single year as the overall peak, it would be very difficult. But I daresay it might be about 1998. I wonder what others would say.

It's not every day I get to see casually-shot footage from the 1980s.
It's a bit surreal for sure.

I spent my 20's, 1991-1998 living and working in a rockbar called 'The Gasworks'. I had so much fun hanging on Queen st. and at 'The Bovine Sex Club'. I go back occasionally but find Toronto a very aggressive/violent city now.
Everyone now-a-days are rent and mortgage broke. No one has disposable income to go out and spend on the city.

@@keithjohnston6861 There were cell phones in 1986; there was jet exhaust from the 1960s onwards.

Lot of fun drunk nights, especially upstairs at the Bev. The area ended I think when City TV relocated there from Queen St. East.

I swear in the shot looking west 1:40 you can see the green and orange sign of May's deli. I'm convinced that it was Mc.D's, Starbucks, Gap that signaled the end of the Queen W. That I remember. Freakshow then to D.C. for day olds and coffee.

Thanks for posting. I was down there a lot from the late 70s onward. Other than the retail landscape, the buildings along there are pretty much the same. I recall getting a little robot from Bakka in 1979 or ‘80. Had it for 20 years-anyone know where it is?

Maybe mm 12 is expressing feminist solidarity with Muslim sisters. You can't get much more patriarchally oppressive than making women cover up. You sound anti-woman. And thanks for your potty mouth.
