Why do new owners go through so much agony because if they would join GMCMI, all the info on every aspect of the GMC is covered including electronic copies of the manuals. Working on the air bags is. So easy. Jack up under the center rear arm support. Add jack stands under the frame, remove both tires . Then you can readily work on the air bags. Fuel issue, use a separate portable gas can , rig a electric fuel pump with rubber fuel hose and feed the carb. Don’t keep cranking the starter in the hope you will pull fuel. You need to drop your fuel tanks, clean them out. Then replace ALL rubber fuel hose from the tanks to the engine. You may wish yo bypass the mechanical fuel pump and install an electric pump near the crossover valve on the frame. This can help to prevent vapor lock as well. Again, nothing new here, you can find all the info st GMCMI. By the way, we have just achieved over 9,000 members. The demand for knowledge about GMC’s has never been greater. As I'm watching I say out loud to the screen, use a pipewrench, next scene, pipewrench. I just bought a '76 GMC last week, it hadn't gone down the road under it's own power in over a decade but I rolled the dice and drove it home 150km. Brakes were sketchy, but fine otherwise. Glad the heater worked, it was a lot colder than where you were working. Have a look at other airbag options, stock is expensive now.
Sounds like Carb and stater problems . Had stater binding up on me. Just replaced. Had fuel problem. Fuel pump relay was bad. Cheaper on e-bay rather than NAPA. Relay located on fire wall at the top passenger outside . It will say fuel pump relay.
Sounds like your pistons switched holes
