    My opinion on this arc is that the battle against inarizaki for me is greater than the match with shiratorizawa. The match against inarizaki isn't just really about winning or losing. It's about getting to know these characters and what their future will look like with their personality. For example Osamu is not fully passionate to dedicate his life to volleyball, he likes food and business. Giving contrast to people like atsumu, hinata, kageyama, and other crazy characters who are only thinking about volleyball and their passion for volleyball. That happens in real life. Many young athletes love sports at their age but as time goes on, the passion for the sport slowly decrease and they find something they love more. But there's also the rare personalities like atsumu. We can see that in Atsumu's persona. He is not only thinking of competing with his brother, he's looking far more than that. As said in the commentary. These kinds of people (atsumu, hinata, kageyama) with the kind of personalities that playing sports gives them ecstatic joy exist in our real world. They're the ones who rise above anyone else in terms of sports. I've met people like them as an athlete myself. That's why when you're watching this anime as an experienced athlete, this season 4 commentaries will give you chills and goosebumps because all the commentaries, the quotes and wisdom given by the coaches, the anxieties, the passionate characters, and concerns of every player are all relatable in real life. And it feels like the anime is made not just for regular people but also for us. That's why I think this season is the best and even better than shiratorizawa match overall.

      I totally agree with you. I'm not an athlete (I was for some years) and how Furudate can explain tiny things that even "us passionate people about sport" is unbelievable.

    "Anyone who can't hit my tosses just sucks" - Miya Atsumu (S4 E5) became one of my favourite lines in the entire show after this episode.
    While on the surface level, Atsumu's mentality may seem very similar to middle school Kageyama, there is a big difference between them.
    Atsumu literally does everything that's humanly possible to give the absolute best tosses to his spikers (even to the point of bending to awkward angles and paining his body as we see in the end). That's why he feels justified in criticizing his spikers when they don't score off his sets. Because his care and dedication towards his spikers is not being reciprocated by them.
    On the other hand, middle school Kageyama just recklessly threw tosses without taking his spikers' needs into account and then berated them for not keeping up.

    • @Luffy-ml5lt
      @Luffy-ml5lt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      in simple words atsumu provides the best toss possible according to SPIKER
      and middle school kageyama provides best set possible according to HIM
      thats why atsumu has every right to critcize unlike kageyama

    btw the anime is indeed an exact adaptation of the manga. the backstories are all there pretty much in the same order. it's only because many of these characters are very important later in the series as well :)

    Nishinoya's grandpa taught me, "If you don't do something, it's a waste. But if you're really scared, get help." I love this lesson! In fact, I was moved by the scene where Nishinoya overcame his weakness with the help of Kinoshita! And it doesn't matter if Atsum is hated by others or by his friends. It feels good to see that he is more straightforward than anyone else when it comes to volleyball and players! At the same time, I'm glad to have Osamu, who is Atsumu's biggest rival and understanding person🥹 (Like Hinata and Kageyama) The pure childlike smile that Atsumu shows several times during the game is impressive☺️ Hinata looked at Hoshiumi and said to Kageyama, "I'm glad I came here." In response, Kageyama looked at Atsum and replied to Hinata, "I'm glad I came here too." i love this scene! I'm using a translator so there are some weird parts, sorry 🥺

    The framing in the manga for Nishinoya's "have someone help you" gives me goosebumps every time I see/watch this scene. Really love how the author manages to include well-times flashbacks so deep into the story, even for the characters we seemingly already know well, /and/ use it for even more character development. I felt Lindsay's sniffle there on a spiritual level :"D
    I also really love that shortest scene with Atsumu's "so?" after being told by Osamu that he's hated by everyone. Goes to show that he kinda sorta had the luxury Kageyama didn't of not giving a shit about it thanks to always having someone to challenge/be on approximately the same level with, hence the Osamu being his "biggest blessing". It's cool how not only Atsumu manages that crazy set, but Osamu's already there to hit it, too (and he's also there to smack him with a ball in that lil scene when it seems Atsumu's too isolated from everyone lmao). Interestingly enough, the manga chapter covering Aran and the twins' flashbacks is called "Love".
    A bit of fun trivia, but in Japanese the counter used for long things (aka fingers and arms in this case) is the same (~hon), so the parallel between "2 arms" and "10 fingers" comes across even clearer.
    As for the pacing issues - I feel like you got your thoughts across (and that's not me discouraging you from doing it/complaining, the last analogy with volleyball was actually a really good one). Personally, I feel like here's the fact that Shiratorizawa was being set up for much longer, hence the relatively bigger impact, and on top of that, this match is definitely the point where Haikyuu gets more mature (sometimes even meta), so I can see how the author'd want to dedicate more time to out-of-game aspects. For me personally, the main "source of hype" also shifted a bit with it, if that makes sense. But even all that aside, you're definitely onto smth with pacing - it has been kind of wack at times in the second half of S4, with some episodes (4x15) cramming as many scenes as possible, and some (like Nekoma flashbacks) feeling dragged out. Not sure how the manga felt in this regard, I don't remember it feeling weird (but it was ongoing, and I am biased), but if memory serves this is the longest game, new team working on the adaptation, covid times, so the bottom line, yeah, pacing did take a hit.
    That being said though, this match sets up a Lot of future themes and directions Haikyuu's going to take, pretty much nothing is wasted, so I hope you enjoy the ride anyway! And I also hope the new team settles in and gets a better feel for pacing by S5 :"D

      the main thing is that Haikyuu has not the usual same length arcs, so some parts in the anime are bound to be perceived as "dragged", because you expect something more from an anime season. In manga terms, everything works perfectly, even with some weird arc length.

    This is why season 4 is my favourite! The amazing three-dimensional personalities of Atsumu, Osamu, Kita and the others is what draws me into this season. Atsumu, who lives and breathes volleyball, may act like a jerk but at the same time does everything he can to give his spikers the most comfortable tosses possible. Osamu who has just started to realize that he is not feeling upset anymore over not achieving something in volleyball. And the strong bond between the two. The sibling relationship dynamics and Osamu's issue of finding himself make it even closer to real life. It may not be obvious but the attention seeking and marching forward Atsumu cares a great deal about his brother and gets shaken off his stride whenever he makes mistakes. While Osamu, despite sometimes disapproving of how Atsumu acts, looks after him anyway and makes sure he is not alone (like when he threw the ball at his head when he was sitting alone). And Kita. Wise beyond his age, strong and caring - he is the personification of becoming the better versions of ourselves every day, whether someone sees us or not, of building up who want to be little by little. He is not a regular but instead of envying the youngers for taking his spot on the team he puts his efforts into helping them with everything he can, saving them when they fall and taking care of them when they need it. He is the person someone as bratty as Atsumu can deeply respect and admire whether he plays or not. And the others who have lesser screen time are very good as well. The uncoventional personality of Suna, the storyline of Riseki and challenging yourself today, the whole idea of 'we don't need the memories' and how it is displayed through the way the team and especially the twins play, all of this makes the match against Inarizaki so incredible.

    This match is completely different from the Shiratorizawa one, and I think this one is just so much better... it's not about winning or losing anymore. It's about them celebrating the sport they love, facing opponents who feel the same about the sport as they do. Futudate's brilliance shines even more from this point on. This match was the breaking point. Before this Haikyuu was a masterpiece, and after this arc Haikyuu is beyond that, to me

  • @aoyamariku9065

    Setter must be Furudate favorite position. I mean he always try to hype up the position by making every setter in the series have that moment that made them say "I want to become setter". My favorite of such moment is Atsumu and Oikawa. Atsumu moment is quite special because his personality is highly competitive and aggressive, which made him clash with his team mates often. But we know that he fall in love with the position over the fact that the setter is the one who help other player score a point by bringing the ball. So of course he always gonna made the perfect set no matter the position of the ball. That probably reason why none of his team mate talk back right in his face with exception to his brother. Because they may dislike his personality but everybody would admit he is an ideal setter on the field.

    Love how all of kinnoshita's hard work doesn't amount to some individual accomplishment, but the fact that he helped Noya get better at jump floats. It's a really nice shake up from the usual formula we see in the show.

    Backstory and commentary is still the same though?? Like, this is literally just how the previous backstories were introduced too. And how much more tight is the pacing supposed to be? The match moves like this because the matches are more complex now and the characters have more growth and their arcs are progressing. People who complain about S4, I don't understand what the problem is supposed to be. Even the animation isn't even that much worse, except for that 1 episode.

  • @tairco5310
    @tairco5310 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is just my opinion, but I personally feel that from this match on Haikyuu got from amazing to masterpiece in terms of storytelling, and it certainly changed here. As someone commented this match isn't that much about the match itself but about certain themes and characters. And even with the adaptation being done during covid, I think it's pretty good. A lot of stuff that happens in this match is really important in the rest of the manga (I won't mention certain plot points because I don't want to spoil).
    But I can understand that you feel weird about the change of pacing. Specially when you were used to the quality production from seasons 1-3 (I do think this season is great).

  • @pwner332
    @pwner332 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So last episode it only showed for a moment but Nishinoya’s bad habit was taking a step back on serves since most ppl serve powerfully and not float serve. That’s why Kinoshita yelled at him to move up to receive the float serve and that’s why its Kinoshita’s “moment” because he helped Nishinoya overcome his bad habit

  • @kunterborn1
    @kunterborn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I fervently disagree that the backstory and the action are indeed separate. They inform each other. This season is a master class in storytelling, in characterization, and in plot development. It's far superior to s3 (which is still awesome) in that regard. Not only that, but this arc is the reason I believe Furudate-sensei to be a literary genius. If you look at it on the surface, you miss a ton of symbolism and extended metaphor, but if you understand literary devices, this arc is a treasure trove for a close reader.

  • @JacopoBasanisi
    @JacopoBasanisi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    What we saw in this episode, from many point of views, is why Hinata is lacking as a player and why he wasn't invited to any of the camps. We saw people in complete control of the court, of the players, of the game. Hinata is none of those.
    About the hype: well, I think everyone agrees that S3 is the best, because it had a BIG setup for the prior 50 episodes and it's a 10 episode match/season with only intense plays, no internal buildup, no training arc, no pause whatsoever.
    As I said multiple times, S4 is about maturity and accomplishment. I can't compare this season to other arcs without spoiling the plot, but nationals are like another starting point for Karasuno. Every point is heavy, every play is their best play, everything in this season is enormously more important than the match with Shiratorizawa.
    Also, "phase 4" of Haikyuu is more about enjoy volleyball, the author took time to bring everyone on the volleyball train, showing roles, rotation, techniques... Now you need to watch the episodes as a real match, to enjoy it.

    Nishinoya reminds me of Toph.
    Always reliably badass and competent. Struggles sometimes but never really gives in to their weakness. Although that makes them lack a certain character depth compared to character's who we've seen hit and rise from rock bottom, it's nice to have supporting characters you can rely on.
    And when they do get some character developement, it's even more enjoyable.

    I remember feeling the same thing when watching this season for the first time, but for a different reason. Part of it was because the animation ngl, but the fact that they said the next opponent was gonna be nekoma if they won against inarizaki made the game feel like karasuno wouldnt lose. Since season 1 they have been hinting a game against nekoma at nationals, and all the talk about this being the 3rd years last tournament made it even more telling that they would not lose this game so it didnt make me anxious at all. That being said i think the strongest point of this game is not the game itself but really the character development of everyone, specially in episodes 22 23 and 24. The more i watch it and the more i think about this game the more i like it.
