In Val-Cenis, the D1006 (ex-RN6) is a beginner's ski slope (called "L'Escargot") in snowy winters when the Col du Mont Cenis is closed. The D1006 at the bottom of the valley is the only road linking all the villages, while the Col du Mont Cenis, overlooking the family commune of Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, provides access to Italy.
