You are so beautiful! I’m in my second year of studying Physiotherapy, and I felt like I may have made the wrong decision. I think OT is such a rewarding career, but I’m glad I’m doing what I’m doing. OT’s and PT’s are both important, so I’m just going to look forward to the future.

Yes! There’s a fine line between OT and PT. My son’s OT described it this way: a child’s occupation is to play and learn, so what can we do to make sure he has the tools he needs or provide him with the environment necessary so that he can be comfortable and have what he needs to be able to play and learn.
@@samuelnicholas7834 Hi! I didn't see your message until just now. Yes, my son attended both at the same time. One thing that was very helpful for OT was identifying that my son needs to be allotted more time while test-taking, and her recommendation made it into his IEP. She made him do an activity/game untimed, and then timed, and then noticed that while the same activity was timed he was more anxious and nervous and didn't get 100% in a reasonable timeframe like he did when it was untimed. If the OT is good, they will know what to look for, and will be able to describe to you how your child's executive function issues, if any, can affect his behaviors, ability to pay attention, follow direction, manage emotions, etc. It took me a while to find an OT that I was happy with, so you may need to go to various before you find one that is a good fit. Good luck =)
Thank you for this video! I am currently an undergrad psychology student who has been persistently perusing some direction for graduate school and a career as a whole. I recently found out about occupational therapy and have been eager to learn more since. Your video was the first TH-cam video to pop up when typing in OT. I love how you said there is room to grow and a flexible schedule in this career path. Just subscribed :-)
Definitely consider OT. It's a great career choice and you will have numerous options within the career. I have had many students who have made career changes into OT from other professions. I definitely recommend it.
@@ecug1g1 Some of the option categories may come from the setting itself: Such as working in outpatient therapy, skilled nursing facilities, home health, school system, acute care, inpatient Rehabilitation, mental health, academia/research etc... The second tier of options would fall under a subset of the first category or specializations. For exam example: specializing in hands in an outpatient setting or working in sports Rehabilitation as outpatient. Or preferring to work in a spinal cord unit or stroke unit in an inpatient rehabilitation environment. Lastly I would venture to say professional growth or entrepreneurship areas as: management track or private practice, opening up a private business, assistive technology, consulting, ergonomics and home / equipment design or niche opportunities where you can maximize on the education and experience that that career provides. Let me know if you want me to expand on any of these suggestions.
I was in a car accident recently and I’m seeing a physical therapist. She mentioned I may want to see an occupational therapist to help me get to back to normal or my new normal
Thank you so much for this! I'm a gymnastics instructor who specializes in early physical development so I've been told countless times to become at OT. Like you mentioned, I was one of the many who had no idea what it was but with research (and this video!) I am really thinknig I should get back to school to complete a Master's in OT!
Meh Um..OT helps people who have cognitive, physical, and sensory problems. Some OT do more than PT and some PT do more than OT depending on the patient and their needs. Idk what you’re trying to get out of this honestly🙄 they’re literally 2 different careers
When you read the areas that they overlap it can seem like there is duplication of services. However when you see each professions/ discipline working in their specific area you will see that they are focusing on completely different objectives and all compliment the overall recovery of the client. OT is a good viable career and will continue to be so for many decades.
@@Anew3A3 I think in any career you will find people with different opinions. I would listen to see what people don't like about a certain career and see if it makes sense or not, or also if it would matter to you, and that may help you make an informed decision. Some folks will complain about anything, some folks will raise legitimate issues. Sometimes those issues are specific to the individual or the specific company that they're in. Just try to look at all the angles and look into the issue raised. If you have any specific questions or want an opinion on something you might have heard, feel free to let me know. I will be glad to answer any question you may have and give an honest response about pros and cons.
Hi thank you for the video it was very informative. I am a senior in an undergraduate program and I wanted to know if you can make a video about your journey of getting accepted into grad school and about your study habits for the Gre.

this really helped me, i’m a freshman in college and i wanted to do pediatric pt but i think i would be best with ot and your video was the icing on the cake! Thanks :))
Thank you for this video, i have 2 questions that i keep hearing different responses about. 1. Does an OTA work under an OT like how a PTA works under a PT 2. I hear that OTA or PTA are required to give sponge baths depending on where you work.
Thank you so much for posting such an informative video! I currently have my bachelors degree but would like to go back to school for something medical (w/o blood). This video was extremely helpful and quick! I love people but not so much paperwork. Thanks for the honesty!

Hi, I feel that I am at a cross-road in my career. I am a mental health therapist with a background in athletics, however, I am not content with where the progression is going and want to perhaps combine athletics/movement with mental health. I've been recently researching O.T & P.T and came across your channel and I find it very helpful in my journey.
As an occupational therapist, can you recommend alternative therapies to a client such as hypnotherapy? Or are you restricted to what the governing board say is okay?
It depends on the setting. If you're in a hospital or skilled nursing facility or home health you may wear scrubs, but if you are in a pediatric clinic or outpatient hand therapy clinic you probably won't.
Thank you so much this helped me a lot! How long is OT school and how difficult/stressful was it to complete? Was it possible to have a job during the schooling or were you mostly dependent on someone else?
Hey this is OT Lifehacker! Typicaly 2-3 years from what I have seen in US programs and of course depends on the program. Some manage to work while in school, often taking jobs on campus.
Thank you for the video I did a personality test and this career came up so I did my personal statement for university for it. This video just renforced the idea that I was going to do it.

And then apply to an OT program correct? Im only 19 and im really confused and new to this college stuff lol
Haha yes! You have the sequence correct. I would chat with a college counselor about the best major for you. Some colleges even have a pre-OT program. :) Best of luck to you!!
Hi really enjoyed your video. I'm a recreation therapist and wanting to transition to an occupational therapist. Prayerfully will start the DOT program at University St. Augustine (Dallas,TX campus) in September.

Thanks for the video. I'm in my early 30s and a full time Cosmetologist. I'm considering going to school first for OTA at a local community college and furthering my education after that..which brings me to my question. I live in IL..is it mandated for me to acquire my masters to practice OT? I've gotten mixed information. Thanks!
Hi there! The last search I did stated that all states (with the possible exception of Colorado) require a Masters degree to become an OT. I did a quick good search and you may find this site helpful being in IL: www.ilota.org/mot-and-otd-programs Hope that helps! :)
I currently work as a PCA ( canadian version of a CNA ) I have been considering going back to school for practical nursing, OT assistant, or PT assistant. I am very familiar with the scape of practice for PNs but not much in terms of OTA and PTAs. What does an OT assistant do in comparison to an OT and what are the biggest differences between an OTA and a PTA.
I am currently a freshman in college and I am majoring in Psychology. I have recently been looking into becoming an OT and I am not sure if I am taking the right path. I am still doing more research on OT, but I would like to know what route you took to becoming an OT. Thank you!
Hi Brooklyn! I was working post-undergraduate degree in a completely unrelated field. To be completely honest, I took a leap of faith. My in-laws consist of many different healthcare providers and it was suggested that I look into O.T.. I had very limited time to research what it was and what I could expect, as I was coming up on school application deadlines. I decided to go for it because it allows me help others and be creative in doing so. There are so many settings in Occupational Therapy to explore. Those are two huge perks to this profession. Also, you'll most likely always be able to find a job! :)
Great video! I am going to my first OT school interview this week and I’m so nervous for explaining why I want to be an OT. You articulate everything about the field so well!
Thank you for this video! I'm currently attending college and my major is kinesiology; however, I am stuck between occupational therapy and physical therapy. How do you think I should figure out which one I want to pursue? Any piece of advise is greatly appreciated :)
Hi Malia! I would shadow both of them for a couple of weeks to see which type of work you gravitate towards more :) Best of luck to you! They are both wonderful fields.
Wow, how you are both? You went into a dual degree program, or you just got into one program and finish that then applied & got into the another program?
Personally, I think having more males in OT would be a wonderful thing!! Especially since there are just as many male as female clients, so some male (or even female) clients might actually feel more comfortable with a male OT, although the profession is currently dominated by women. I think having a diversity of OTs is very important to continue bringing new perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences to the field which will provide greater treatment for clients in turn. I do not think the profession is tailored more for women over men! If it seems that way it is probably only because of societal norms that portray women as being more of "compassionate helpers/caregivers," although being an OT is so much more than that! It is great for anyone who wants a job where they can be really creative and active and it takes a lot of knowledge in anatomy/physiology as well as psychology (among several other things), so there is more to it than meets the eye for most people. Anyway, I appreciate your interest in OT!
I know Im mad late but this is was so helpful. I was going for teaching but realized it wasnt for me but still wanted to work in a field where I work and help children. This video sold me on occupation therapy! Plus you are so pretty and have such a bright personality!
What about the mental health aspect of being an OT? Also my friend is a pelvic floor specialist but also an OT which I find confusing because shouldn’t that be for PT?
Hello, I am a junior in college and have recently had to change my major from Nursing. I just wanted to know what were your steps to becoming an OT and what did you major in in Undergrad?
+De'Erica A Hey there! 😊 I was a communication major (pretty unrelated) and worked in an unrelated field for a few years before discovering OT. There are prerequisite courses you need to take before applying for OT school. Basics usually include stats, anatomy and physiology as well as some psychology courses. You also need to take the GRE. Most programs also require you to do some volunteer hours with an OT as well. Looks like you’ll likely have some courses out of the way, which is nice! Good luck to you!
Love Learn Laugh Okay, that's great to hear! I am a Psychology minor as well so the Psychology courses I have taken may help me as well. Thank you so much for responding! I appreciate it! ❤
Thanks so much for this video!! I’m considering a career change and completed my bachelors in accounting In 2014 and recently left my job for some soul searching 😊. I’m interested in this but a little confused on where to start 🤷🏻♀️ I know I’ll need to go back to do a masters, but, what is the process of earning my masters degree? Do I need to go back to do a bachelors to be eligible for a masters program? Are all masters programs 2-3 years long? I really appreciate your help on this ❤️
how much do occupational therapists get paid, do you really get paid alot or not? and do they get enough hours or do OTA take their hours, and how long does it take to do the paperwork
How do you start your journey to becoming a occupational therapist. Interested in getting into the field. I'm a physical therapyaide but would love to become a ocuptional therapist .
Hi there! I’m a little confused about the route I should take with what I have already regarding my degrees. I have a BA in Spanish and now I’m interested in furthering a career in OT. Would I have to do over my bachelors degree? Or are there courses I can take that are equivalent to a degree? Not sure what to do.
Hi! I'm a student just finishing my undergraduate degree and considering pursuing a Masters in OT. Could you tell me more about working specifically in the NICU, it sounds very interesting!!
I’m a senior in high school and I’m looking forward to becoming a occupational therapist but after high school I’m going to a community college is that a bad start?
Hi, that's a great start! Some community colleges even have OTA programs if that is something you're interested in. You can major in anything you want for undergrad as long as you complete the necessary requirements by the OT programs you apply to. I majored in psychology and just got accepted to a program :) but other students major in biology, fitness, nutrition, art therapy, business, etc. so it's totally up to you. Good luck!
Not all! I’m in community college and a OTA major. And then after that I’m transferring to a 4 year college to major in Allied Health and then Occupational Therapy. Just make sure that the college you want to transfer to has an OT program and look at the required bachelors degrees you can major in before starting your master’s in OT. Hope this helps!😊
Think I’ve made my mind up! Your video has just enlightened me again why I should go to university. It’s such a rewarding job, I’ve been motivated by money in my jobs but I need a career and finally follow my passion. I wanted ask more about being an entrepreneur? You mentioned starting a business. Could consultancy cover this too? Really want to start a mentoring programme or a series of programmes that people can do to overcome difficulties
Can occupational therapists work with clients with mental disabilities as well? I originally was on the path to pursue clinical therapy since I want to work with clients with mental and emotional health disorders. However, I also want to work with clients with the day to day life such as getting a client back on track to their daily routine of things.
thank you so much for this video! as a person looking into OT as a possible career, i am wondering about the possibilities of specializing in an area - i love the idea of focusing on sexual health and wellness and/or helping to provide more basic skills such as time management to folks with attention deficit struggles or folks who may not have any illnesses or mental barriers, but just feel like they don't know how to structure their lives in a way that works for them. i am curious about this because i wonder if an OT degree would be best or if this is something that might be better done with some type of coaching certification. thank you so much!
What is the process to become an OT like? As in, what is schooling is required, what are the challenges with the schooling, etc. Also, what is the best advice for a young high school student who is considering this for their career?
Hi there! Check out my video on how to become an OT student. It will answer most of your questions: th-cam.com/video/cdjb41ZCph8/w-d-xo.html My best advice for you is to shadow an OT in a few different settings (acute rehab, inpatient rehab, pediatric, school) to get a good sense of what an OT does and which setting you could potentially see yourself working in. Best of luck!!
I am currently working in before/after school care with children aged 4-12 and I'm also a support worker with a couple of teenage clients. I'm thinking of going back to uni to become and OT, is it worth it?
Hey there have you heard about the budget cuts that are being made by the CMS? I signed up for the OTA program 2 days ago and then I hear about this. I have a friend who is an ota and I asked her opinion on if I should go for the program and she told me to run because OTAs and PTAs are losing their jobs. Is this something that I should be concerned about or is it not that big of a deal?
Thank you so much for this video coz I’m planning to go to that field and I was a bit confused but thx to you for giving me an idea and sharing this with us
Quite dominated ;) but that usually bodes well for the male OTs. In my almost 5 years in OT, I can count the male OTs I know on one hand. Diversity is needed! The water is warm, my friend. Come on in! 😆
Male OT here 🙋🏾♂️ I will say that we’re rare and that makes us quite desirable for potential employees as there is a huge market worldwide for male OTs particularly in physical rehabilitation but also throughout the other fields that OTs practice in.
I’m an SLP just curious about the entire scope of what you all do because most of my students receive OT and PT as well! We are the closest professions to each other in this world 🙌🏾👏🏾
I too find myself always wanting to learn about PT and OT. My clients have almost always had Speech, OT and PT services. And now that I'm trying to figure out what my 3 year old needs I'm looking at these services from a different perspective. I love being an SLP 🥰
I can’t decide between OT and PT! this video helped a lot to let me know what the differences are- but do you have any advice in deciding between the two?
Hey OT Lifehacker here! I had been deciding between the two for a while too and I am so glad for the choice I made for OT. The way I did it, I listed the difference in approaches and values/philosophies. Feel free to check out OT and PT channels and try to find differences. It also helps a lot to look at PT and OT student channels to see how their learning and curriculum structure is. I also document my experiences with the goal of helping people see what OT is so that could be something to look at too.
thank you for this amazing video! i'm currently in the goal of becoming a physical therapist, but i've been constantly hesitant about it because i really want to work with kids and that it is not a flexible career if i get burnt out from it. occupational therapy seems like a better fit for me. i was wondering whether majoring in psychology or kinesiology in my undergrad would be more useful for ot school?
Hey there, I just read your comment and I feel as if I'm in the exact same position as you. I've completed my first year as a PT student and I'm now strongly considering changing my way into OT. Can you tell me about your experience so far? Would be really helpful, thank you.
Physical therapy is actually a very flexible career! :) if you get burnt out from working in an outpatient setting, you can always transfer to an inpatient setting. You also don’t have to just work with kids, you can work with any age population
You seem like the perfect person to talk to! I’m 29 years old and close to completing my masters in exercise and nutrition science. The more I work, the more I realize there’s sadly not a lot of career opportunities in the fitness industry and I’ve been looking to make a career change. Do you think this field would be a good transition for a struggling personal trainer? Lol
Thank you so much I'm a high school student who wants to study OT, I wanna ask about the legal requirement to be an OT. Is it true that OT has a "doctor license" that allows u work in that country only ( the country of your university), can't apply for a job in another country? Thank you hope u can see and reply my question
Thank you for sharing! I'm currently finishing up my Biology (B.S) ...I'm having trouble finding internship opportunities... Is there a specific method you used to gain experience for OT school?
Hello. I am new to your channel, and I am thrilled to have stumbled upon it. Thank you for explaining my 8 years of questions that have gone slightly unanswered. I would like to know where you completed your degree to become an O.T.? Aside from the O.T. my daughter receives at school there aren't many close to me, so I am not on the path to just become her own personal therapist and go from there. 🤷🏾♀️ maybe even start my own business in the process.
You’re absolutely stunning! You’re literally glowing you have magical eyes lol I’m a Pisces I just fell in love with you 😂😍😅 you just look genuinely happy and I love that.☺️ Anywaysss! Thank you for this, it was really helpful. I have sensory processing disorder but I’m also studying massage therapy. So I was looking to expand my massage scope of practice with PT but I struggle to find an OT to help me as an adult with SPD so that made me want to go to school for it myself. Would it be ok if I emailed you with more questions? I’m finding people of both fields to brain pick haha
Hello, Thank you for your insightful video. I’m falling in the same circumstances as you, as in I work in sales and I don’t find fulfillment in it. Can you please let me know what are courses you needed to take to get in the OT program?
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm looking to change careers and occupational therapy has definitely caught my interest. What made you an excellent candidate for schools when you applied for the degree? I'm currently volunteering at a hospital and I want to do more than observe. How should I go about getting more hands-on experience?
Thanks Elizabeth! It's hard to say for sure, because we did not have interviews for the application process and I was really just a number in line. I would imagine my letters of recommendation and undergraduate GPA were my strongest areas as an applicant. My GRE scores were ehh, haha. Are you shadowing an Occupational Therapist at the hospital? I would recommend reaching out to Occupational Therapists in different settings to shadow them, and see where you'd be most interested in working. A far as hands on experience, that may be limited before you become a student because of liability reasons. However, you might be able to pick up a job as a therapy aide that works directly with the therapist and patients, and that would give you a lot of information about the job, and plenty of hands on experience!
This video was VERY informative! Love it! I'm really considering OT. Currently 4th year in my BSc Biology degree. Do you think OT is a huge job calling around the world?
Hi Karilynn! After you receive your bachelor's degree, you would apply for a Master's degree or Doctorate degree program for Occupational Therapy. Pre-req classes will be required, such as anatomy and physiology, abnormal psych, and child development (depends on university). You will also need to take the GRE. Hope this helps!
Hey OT Lifehacker here :)! Kids OT Help is so right! The prereqs are important and I want to add on some other very important things to consider: Make sure you check when those prereqs need to be completed and how long they last for (each program is different). Plan for when to take the GREs and know what scores are recommended. As for route of education, you really can choose anything and just be sure to connect it well with OT in your personal statement. Feel free to contact me on IG @OT_Lifehacker for more details.
This was so helpful! Would OT's also be able to work with athletes? Also, what bachelor's degree did you obtain to meet the pre-reqs for the OT program? Thank you so much
So glad you found it helpful! Do you mean in sports medicine? That is a good question, I am not sure to be honest. I mostly see PTs in that particular setting; but not to say there aren't OTs doing it as well. I was a communication major before OT school. It was completely unrelated to the courses needed for OT school, so i had to take all of the pre-requisites after the fact (with the exception of statistics). It doesn't matter what your major is in as an undergraduate, just that you receive your degree from an accredited college. You can take the pre-requisite courses at any time before applying. :)
Mentor! I am from Pakistan. I want to start this career . I am already a teacher of hearing impaired students herein Pakistan. Are you training through online classes for students like me? I want to take classes online from you.
Thank you that helps.. I just want to ask, are all premature babies should go to OT regularly? Mine are 25weekers and they are still in nicu, but i don't have access to OT but I will do whatever it takes to help them with their development.. Is there any online courses or websitea that might teach me or help me with track their development and improve it?
Raneem Riyad Congrats on your babies!! To answer your question, every baby is different. Not all premature babies end up needing OT. Typically, we would at the very least continue to follow babies born before 30-34 weeks at what is called a “high risk clinic”; simply meaning we want to keep eyes on the kiddos that didn’t have a chance to “fully” develop in the womb, as they are at increased risk for developmental delays. My suggestion would be to have a conversation with your Dr. about resources after discharge from the NICU to ensure your babies are getting whatever they may need. At the very least, if appropriate, your Dr. should be able to refer you for an evaluation for early intervention services including OT. Hopefully from there you will get lots of good information about things you can be doing at home to help. You are already an awesome mommy for looking into things to help! :)
Love Learn Laugh thank you for your kind words.. I mean in our country they dont do early intervention even there is no high risk clinics or special pediatricians for preemis! I asked NICU doctor and she told me that after discharge your babies will be normal babies so take them to any pediatrician available! (now i think she ISNOT nicu doctor she is only general pediatrician) That's why im trying to find other ways by my self..
Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry to hear that. What country do you live in? You’re the first parent to ask me for such resources for preemies. I am not familiar with the content on this website, but it looks like the offer a wide variety of information for preemie parents, including what to expect when you leave the NICU and things you can do to help your babies. www.prematurity.org/premiebooks.html#prematurity I will talk to my co-workers and ask if they have any additional resources that may be helpful for you too! If you have an email address, I can send anything else I come across.
Sure! You just need to make sure you take all the required pre-requisite courses the colleges you apply to ask for. Your major helps as many schools as for a developmental psychology course and abnormal psychology. Others will most likely include anatomy and physiology (with a lab) and statistics. Best of luck!! Xx

Like you mentioned, I was one of the many who had no idea what it was but with research (and this video!) I am really thinknig I should get back to school to complete a Master's in OT!
I am an occupational therapist and i am glad i found another mate in this field , keep going girl❤️
Kids OT Help is awesome!!! Thank you indeed!!
Undergraduate student here. Just head back from two schools so far about an interview! I can’t wait.
I love how passionate you are about your field :)
Thank you so much, Jessica!! :)
Masters of OT student here....thanks so much for the video and the channel!
How often do OTs work with athletes? Or sport specific injuries? Are OTs able to specialize in things like this?
With occupational therapy yiu can work with anyone. Its your choice and you can get specialized in that area.
Meh OTs can work with any age group and do a lot more..you really thought you did something😐
Meh Um..OT helps people who have cognitive, physical, and sensory problems. Some OT do more than PT and some PT do more than OT depending on the patient and their needs. Idk what you’re trying to get out of this honestly🙄 they’re literally 2 different careers
Meh You’re honestly acting like a child...grow up.
Meh Lmao okay, believe what you want to believe, cuz at the end of the day all y’all do is perform stretches with injured people😐
What made you choose OT instead of PT? They're pretty similar.
I want to go into Occupational Therapy but I’m so nervous about it’s longevity in the medical profession.
@CLOUT it’s competitive with PT and nursing and often overlooked as a valuable source of therapy.
@CLOUT I have and sometimes these concentrations overlap.
When you read the areas that they overlap it can seem like there is duplication of services. However when you see each professions/ discipline working in their specific area you will see that they are focusing on completely different objectives and all compliment the overall recovery of the client. OT is a good viable career and will continue to be so for many decades.
@@drrehabdirector4973 That’s great to hear. I just keep reading Reddit post about many OTs being unhappy with their careers.
Great video I just start in college and my only question is how many years it’s gonna take me to become an OT (it’s my major)
Hi thank you for the video it was very informative. I am a senior in an undergraduate program and I wanted to know if you can make a video about your journey of getting accepted into grad school and about your study habits for the Gre.
Hi Jamay! Good idea! It seems like I am getting quite a few students finding this video and some of those questions are popular. I will start putting some ideas together. Thank you!
this really helped me, i’m a freshman in college and i wanted to do pediatric pt but i think i would be best with ot and your video was the icing on the cake! Thanks :))
also you remind me of maggie from greys :)
Thank you for this video, i have 2 questions that i keep hearing different responses about.
1. Does an OTA work under an OT like how a PTA works under a PT
Thank you for your feedback! Wish you all the best in finding the perfect fit. :)
This is about your gorgeous hair. How long can you maintain it without it getting freezy and how do you maintain it before you retwist it? Its so beautiful, I love when we grow our own
Hi, I feel that I am at a cross-road in my career.
The Best ot video iv come across. Thanks so much!
I'm in the Army. I was just accepted into the occupational therapy program. I'm very excited.
Congratulations 🎊🎈🍾
@@nekoleamber Thx
Do you wear scrubs at work? What is the general dress code for working as a occupational therapist?
That is SO cool! Where did you find the personality test? That sounds like a great resource. :)
Kids OT Help it’s on a website called prospects.
+Rebecca Robinson Thank you! I’ll check it out! 😊
Hi, im currently attending community college and taking the pre-requisites for a program like OT, after im done with my associates degree i have to transfer to a 4 year college and complete my bachelors degree in like psychology? And then apply to an OT program correct? Im only 19 and im really confused and new to this college stuff lol
Haha yes! You have the sequence correct. I would chat with a college counselor about the best major for you. Some colleges even have a pre-OT program. :) Best of luck to you!!
I'm literally in the same boat right now ! I hope you are still trucking through. You can do this 💪
Hi really enjoyed your video. I'm a recreation therapist and wanting to transition to an occupational therapist. Prayerfully will start the DOT program at University St. Augustine (Dallas,TX campus) in September.
Hey! I know this might be off topic but I am actually interested into going into the field of recreational therapy. If you don't mind, could you email or let me know here (either way) about how you feel about this career, the pros and cons, etc. And why you want to transition. This would be so helpful since I am entering my freshman year of college. Thank you so much for any response given!!
asha2500@yahoo.com
Thanks for the video. I'm in my early 30s and a full time Cosmetologist. I'm considering going to school first for OTA at a local community college and furthering my education after that..which brings me to my question. I live in IL..is it mandated for me to acquire my masters to practice OT? I've gotten mixed information.
Thanks!
Hi there! The last search I did stated that all states (with the possible exception of Colorado) require a Masters degree to become an OT. I did a quick good search and you may find this site helpful being in IL: www.ilota.org/mot-and-otd-programs Hope that helps! :)
Your Video is so helpful, just finish my pre req now looking for a program thanks so much!!
So glad to hear this!! I'm happy to help!
The pros is very true. The cons are also. Best career choice.
Great video! I am going to my first OT school interview this week and I’m so nervous for explaining why I want to be an OT. You articulate everything about the field so well!
Thank you Reilly! You've got this! Speak from the heart, and you'll be just fine. Good luck!! :)
They are both wonderful fields.
are ots allowed to prescribe medicine?
I would like to go into this field. May I ask after grad school, can l go straight to working with children or l have to take more courses?
what’s the best undergraduate major to become a OT?
This has been SUPER helpful. I am a communications major as well and I am looking to make the switch! Thank you so much😇
Yayy!! Good luck to you! If you haven't already, check out my video on How to Become an OT Student. :)
@@nekoleamber I went to watch it right after this one! Im so glad I came across your channel. It was a blessing 😇
You are so sweet! Thank you, Tamara!! Best of luck to you!
Great video! I’m OT/PT currently working in level III NICU & loving it!
Wow!! OT & PT?? What a rockstar! :) I'm in a level 3 NICU too!! Love working with the tiny ones!
Love Learn Laugh nice! We need more rehab therapists in NICUs! Glad to hear it! Are you going to the NANT conference? I’m going to go next yr. 🙂
radiahmaria I agree! I won’t be able to make it next year, but I plan on going in 2019. Maybe I’ll see you there 😊
Awesome at first I wanted to do Nursing. But then I want to be an OT.
Wow, how you are both? You went into a dual degree program, or you just got into one program and finish that then applied & got into the another program?
This is great! I'm thinking about doing my MOT next year :)
Congratulations to u
What are the thoughts on guy OTs? I've seen many women shown in this profession and I'm not sure if it's tailored more for women over men.
Thank you so much!!
What about the mental health aspect of being an OT? Also my friend is a pelvic floor specialist but also an OT which I find confusing because shouldn’t that be for PT?
Hello,
I am a junior in college and have recently had to change my major from Nursing.
+De'Erica A of course!💜 That should definitely help you, as I believe the psych courses are abnormal and developmental. Best of luck to you!! 😊
I have been accepting into an OTA program but I really want to become an OT. So, my question is can we go from OTA to OT without having to start over?
Thanks so much for this video!! I’m considering a career change and completed my bachelors in accounting In 2014 and recently left my job for some soul searching 😊. I’m interested in this but a little confused on where to start 🤷🏻♀️
I know I’ll need to go back to do a masters, but, what is the process of earning my masters degree? Do I need to go back to do a bachelors to be eligible for a masters program? Are all masters programs 2-3 years long?
I really appreciate your help on this ❤️
What do they do for a 4-year-old autistic? Does it include eating, drinking, drawing, writing, and most important, toileting?
That's what I always wanted to do in my life .
how much do occupational therapists get paid, do you really get paid alot or not? and do they get enough hours or do OTA take their hours, and how long does it take to do the paperwork
How do you start your journey to becoming a occupational therapist. Interested in getting into the field. I'm a physical therapyaide but would love to become a ocuptional therapist .
compare those two with Massage therapy, what do you think is easier to get a job? thank you!
Hi Amie! Shoot me an email with anything specific you would like to know. :) hello@kidsothelp.com Xx
Good luck!
Jennifer Sansone thanks so much☺️
What is the class work like did you do it online or classroom
Think I’ve made my mind up! Your video has just enlightened me again why I should go to university. It’s such a rewarding job, I’ve been motivated by money in my jobs but I need a career and finally follow my passion. I wanted ask more about being an entrepreneur? You mentioned starting a business. Could consultancy cover this too? Really want to start a mentoring programme or a series of programmes that people can do to overcome difficulties
That is amazing!! Yes! I have actually just launched an OT consulting practice. I am really excited to see where it leads. :)
No wayyy!!!
@@ines4982 what do you mean?
Thank you for making this video
My pleasure!
Thank you so much for this video coz I’m planning to go to that field and I was a bit confused but thx to you for giving me an idea and sharing this with us
That is awesome!! Welcome to the club, future OT! ;)
How female dominated is the occupation and does this possibly advantage the job prospects for males?
Thank you for your very helpful information
Great video. Very informative.
So I’m wanting to become an OT but I was kind of curious. Do some OTs work with kids with mental disabilities like autism or Down syndrome
thank you for this amazing video! i'm currently in the goal of becoming a physical therapist, but i've been constantly hesitant about it because i really want to work with kids and that it is not a flexible career if i get burnt out from it. occupational therapy seems like a better fit for me. i was wondering whether majoring in psychology or kinesiology in my undergrad would be more useful for ot school?
Hey there, I just read your comment and I feel as if I'm in the exact same position as you.
I've completed my first year as a PT student and I'm now strongly considering changing my way into OT. Can you tell me about your experience so far? Would be really helpful, thank you.
Physical therapy is actually a very flexible career! :) if you get burnt out from working in an outpatient setting, you can always transfer to an inpatient setting. You also don’t have to just work with kids, you can work with any age population
Thank you so much for this!
What does the paper work consist of?
Thank you for sharing! I'm currently finishing up my Biology (B.S) ...I'm having trouble finding internship opportunities... Is there a specific method you used to gain experience for OT school?
I am a PTA and a Cota and PT is less able to explain what OT does and usually if they do explain it it's a demeaning or derogatory manner.
Sis thank you for posting this video. I’ve been on the fence about going for OT or PT as a profession. I appreciate this🙏🏽
Welcome to the OT fam! 😁
What was your biggest challenge while studying OT? I start school in the fall and I am extremely nervous.
Hello, do you know if I could become an OT with a bachelors in kinesiology?
You’re literally glowing you have magical eyes lol I’m a Pisces I just fell in love with you 😂😍😅 you just look genuinely happy and I love that.☺️
Anywaysss!
You are so sweet! Thank you so much for the kind words!! :))
Absolutely!! Feel free to shoot me an email. hello@kidsOThelp.com :)
Hello,
Thank you for your insightful video.
You are so beautiful. I have an ABI.I really enjoy watching your vlogs.
This video was VERY informative! Love it! I'm really considering OT. Currently 4th year in my BSc Biology degree. Do you think OT is a huge job calling around the world?
Im looking for PT school but OT feels very rewarding
Thank you for making this video! I loved it! What would be the appropriate route for education? I am about to start university. Thank you!
Thank you so much for responding back. This is great feedback!
Now I really know what I wanna do
Mentor! I am from Pakistan. I want to start this career . I am already a teacher of hearing impaired students herein Pakistan. Are you training through online classes for students like me? I want to take classes online from you.
Do we need to write NEET exam to become an occupational therapist?

I will talk to my co-workers and ask if they have any additional resources that may be helpful for you too! If you have an email address, I can send anything else I come across.
Love Learn Laugh thank you for all your assistance, i really appreciate it.. Yes please if you have any material send it to me at ranoma2009@gmail.com
Sounds great , thank you.
Thanks for this video!!.I'm hoping to go into this rewarding field too... can OTs also work with animals do you know?
That is awesome! Yes!! Check out hippotherapy :)
If I’m majoring in psychology am I able to pursue this career?
Sure! You just need to make sure you take all the required pre-requisite courses the colleges you apply to ask for. Your major helps as many schools as for a developmental psychology course and abnormal psychology. Others will most likely include anatomy and physiology (with a lab) and statistics. Best of luck!! Xx
Absolutely, OT's work in psych too.
I have a question. What did you major in?
