Shootout: Safety Razor vs. Disposable Razor

  • King Gillette is often credited as inventing the "razor and blades" business model where razors are sold cheaply to get people buying a disposable blade. His double edged safety razor with disposable blades was revolutionary and supplanted the straight razor, which needed constant sharpening. Despite the "customer for life" reliance on replacement blades, the safety razor is a good product, for one thing, because it saves time the user would otherwise need to spend on sharpening a straight razor.. Not the same can be said for the modern disposable plastic razors and crappy "Turbo" and "Quattro" labeled jobs with detachable blades. These are JUNK. Stop buying them.

Safety razors are making a comeback, people are sick of paying 50-60$ for 8 cartridges that last 4-5 shaves.
A .15 cent double edged blade lasts me the same amount of time.

I bought a 1950's Gillette safety razor.. First week; was nicks everywhere; but starting 3 week; it's super clean.

Bought a safety razor years ago. Best investment I ever made. You can buy a pack of 100 blades for ~$12. Cuts closer, more comfortable, doesn't clog and cheap as heck.

I love the point in this video, but you're killing me here. A few tips to make that shave even better
    - Take your beard down before putting a razor to it.
    - Prep your beard by steaming it first. A hot towel for two minutes or wash it with bar soap and hot water. The razor will cut through your whiskers like a hot knife through butter.
    - Rinsing your razor in a sink is a good way to get an infection. Do it under the faucet.

No need to take the beard down if you use the right tool - an open comb double edge safety razor - or a replaceable blade straight razor aka Shavette.
Either a vintage Gillette Old or New Type or any other currently in production like a Merkur 15c/25c/41c (mild), a Fatip Picollo (full brass, mid aggressive) or a Mühle R41 (the beast) among many others.
Closed combs/safety bar razors are for shaving daily.
Never heard of anyone getting an infection by rinsing his razor in the sink. Sorry, but that's bull, unless you sh$t in your sink or never clean it.

    • @alphacapo

If u use witch hazel or any aftershave with a little alcohol. Post shave . No worries. I've never disinfectant my sink before shaving. Never gotten infection from shaving

Another bonus - if you have a really old house with one of the original medicine cabinets above the sink, it will have a little slot in it that allows you to fill the wall cavity with used blades.

You ever notice how Bic only produces super cheap disposable stuff? Their pens, their razors and their lighters? Cheap enough so you don't make a fuzz when you lose or break them and sold in bulk so their products seem to always be in abundance. Long story short: their model is made to keep you coming back for more. It's a shame this model has now been taken over by manufacturers for consumer electronics and appliances and it explains how printing documents at the home is a hellish task some 600 years since the invention of the printing press.

I just made the switch after seeing this video. I was using 2 razors everytime I shaved and this route will save me money. Safety razors for the most part are the same design/concept but the blades I’ve read are different. I bought the Van Der Hagen razor and am currently using the supplied blades. Just wondering what the very best blade for these razors are. What’s everybody else using? Sharpest isn’t always better but I want something that is best for sensitive skin. Suggestions?

It's probably worth noting that the newer disposable razors aren't deigned to be used on full beards as shown in this video, they're only really designed to get rid of stubble. Also, does anyone know why Brad submerged the blade in baby oil at the end?

    • @Park_Place
      @Park_Place 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's an old custom from when blades were made of carbon steel. Keeping it in baby oil meant water couldn't rust it and the blade would last longer. It's not very necessary anymore because new blades are coated with chrome or platnium

One of the failures of that older technology is those "safety razors" tend to nick and cut a face (as you demonstrated), no matter how careful you try to be. I use a triple bladed Gillette Mach 3 razor because it DOES allow me to easily clean it out under running water, and it DOESN'T cut or nick my face. I have tried others, but they aren't as maneuverable and able to get into the tight spots on a face like the Mach 3 does. I'm retired now, so I don't shave everyday (more like once or twice a week), but when I do, I shave in the shower and I do it with my eyes closed. I can feel where I need to shave with my fingers. It only takes a few minutes and it's as close a shave as I have ever gotten, and without any nicks or cuts. Ever. You just have to get used to it and learn how to use it properly. The disposable blades last a long time, too. I'll replace a blade probably three times a year, and only when the blade gets to a point where shaving feels a bit uncomfortable. And no, I don't have any connection with the Gillette Company. I'm just offering my two cents' worth.
By the way, I really enjoy your amplifier mod and repair videos. They take me back to the days when I repaired guitar, PA, and accordion amplifiers (the late 1960s and early 1970s), and so many other tube based electronic devices. Your commentary makes me smile since I actually remember and understand all that older technology, especially now that so much is solid state, and way too often "disposable" today. Keep creating the great content. I love it!

I've been using a safety razor for decades. I've just recently started to see them in the stores again. I use a mug and shaving soap with a brush when I can get it (rather than shaving cream from a can). Safety razor blades are cheaper than disposable razors and do a better job so there is no reason to use disposables.

All safety razors are not the same. Parker 92R (mild) vs Merkur 37C (very aggressive).
All safety razor blades are not the same. Dorco (normal) vs Feather (samurai sharp).
Using the Merkur 37C with Feather blades is a very challenging experience.

The Merkur 37C is an awesome safety razor. The head contorts the blade so the stroke is more of a scything action. Very dangerous in the wrong hands.

I bought a Mercur razor and some Feather Hi-Stainless platinum coated blades some time ago. Best shave ever. The blades are super sharp and superior to the Wilkenson and Gillette type blades. As you say, you need a light touch; don't press and let the weight of the razor do the work. I also use a badger shaving brush and shaving mug and soap to work up a good lather. Wash you face well before lathering up and re-lather before each pass over your whole face. Rinse well with cold water when done and you have a face smoother than a newborn's butt.

My dad played with a dude called "Jack tragic" in the late 80's. "Jack Tragic and the Unfortunates" was the name of the band, it was like GG Allin meets the Misfits on acid. Jack had this leather jacket that had utility blades sewn into the sleeves and shoulders, he'd get into the pit and slam with people, and they'd get cut up. He was a sick dude, but my god was he a brilliant performer......

Bloody brilliant! I used to use my Grandfather's Wilkinson Sword safety razor when I first started shaving, but threw it out for, what I thought, was superior shaving technology. My face was never the same. It looks like I'll have to get out and find myself another old safety razor. As you get older, you just get so complacent.

I have used the safety razor for the last several years and have been very happy with the switch. I bought 100 blades on amazon for about $13. Still using them, the blades last for a very long time and I shave every day, sometimes twice a day. So I would heartily recommend using a safety razor over other forms of razor, it has saved me quite a bit of money. Only thing is you have to respect the razor when you shave, don't go hacking at your face or you will be bleeding from several places. Just take it slow, realizing you have a very sharp instrument in your hands.

I just turned 29, and have been using a safety razor for about a year.. I went on to buy a gillette fatboy and black beauty.. and use feather razors.. Never in my life since I started shaving have I got closer and better shaves.. plus the soaps are better. I recommend getting a cheap boar brush and some taylor of old bond street soap. Really adds to the experience of shaving.

The Super Speed did well considering it's not a very aggressive razor at. Try finding a Vintage Gillette NEW, or grab a nice new open comb razor. I like the Fatip Grande in gold; solid brass and open comb. It'll mow through that beard like nobody's business and clog even less than the SS. If you're looking for good, cheap blades, might I suggest you look at Voskhod, or Shark Super Stainless. If you're feeling a bit richer, grab some Gillette Silver Blues from Russia. You like the Blues, right? :-)

I started to use safety razor this summer and will not go back to disposables. In Finland Gil.. Mach3 set of 5 refill blades costs over 20 euros. I bought 50 Japanese Feather safety blades for 10 euros in eBay. And you need fewer strokes and end result is much better. Just using thick slick soap lather made from "Blue's soap" with brush.

I use a straight razor - barber's tool. Takes some time to get used to, and some blood, but it's really effective. Worth learning how to use properly though...

The old Gillette you have is a 1940's Superspeed and it's a much better razor than the Van Der Hagen. The Van Der Hagen is a rebranded Weishi 9306, which is a relatively cheap chinese razor. Get a synthetic shaving brush and some quality shaving cream or soap and the shave will be even better.

      @TheGuitologist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Been using safety razors and shavettes for the last 3 years now. One of the best financial decisions I've ever made. I also used to get terrible razor burn, which is no longer an issue. You really should use real shaving soap and a brush for the best experience.
A few notes on things I think you got wrong, or would be helpful to have mentioned. For one, double edge razor blades are cheap. I bought a 100 pack of a blade that I like for less than $10. Another thing, different blades work better for different people. You mentioned that you get a few small cuts whenever you shave. This could either be due to using an old razor and which doesn't hold the blade properly, or the type of blade your using is not suitable for your particular face.
Honestly there's just too much to go into in one youtube comment. If you're interested in trying wet-shaving, or just saving money and switching to double edge razors, check out this subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge
Brad, I've been watching your videos for the better part of the last year and I've loved everything you've put out. That includes this video. I think you're sharing some great information for people who don't know any better. Thanks for providing great content.

Brad, get yourself a shaving mug & brush also.... The Pink Floyd video from the 80s stopped me from ever considering using real razor blades, but once blades hit $20 per pack I got the safety razor endorsed by Pawn Stars' Rick Harrison. I ordered extra blades. All in for $25 and I have enough blades for rest of my life.
Worst part of buying modern blades was they are always changing and trying to figure out which ones fit your handle and then end up having to return them.

      The Guitologist
Hi Brad, is it possible to talk to you about my 1967/68 Silverface/Blackface Super Reverb?
My household lights would go dim when an appliance started for several months. A power surge occurred 2 days ago that ruined a few things that were plugged in due to a bad neuteral wire coming from the power co, which was related to the dimming. I didn't think it damaged the amp, but the sound seems a little sour and not quite as loud since then. Do you think a portion of the components may have been damaged or is it my imagination?
I'm a fan that has often wanted to ask you several other questions and thought perhaps you might even like to make a video of my odd-ball Silverface/Blackface amp, to show how to identify if truly a 1967 factory AB763 in a 1968 cabinet, but main question now is if you would you be interested in giving it the "once over"?
