  • A cold damp, dark January day when my daughter brought over her car needing a light bulb replaced. All my space heaters and lights were at another home (loaned) so I did this one without any creature comforts. Still got the job done.

    This guy is doing it the hard way! I replaced mine in about 30 seconds. Twist the bulb sprocket 90 degrees counter clockwise and pull it out. Then unclip the bracket from the bulb and install the new one (i.e. slip the harness plug onto the new bulb and stick in bulb back into the headlight housing and twist 90 degrees clockwise). Line it up to insert back in the same position that you took it out). NO - you don't need to remove a thing. YES it is a bit tight for your hand - get a good light on it so you can see what you're doing. Practice on the parking light bulb right next to the headlight bulb which is wide open and accessible to you. They remove exactly the same way! ! ! BTW don't touch the glass on the bulb with your fingers as it leaves oil on the bulb and will create "hot spots" that will burn the new bulb out prematurely. Hold it with a Kleenex.

    Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!!!! I just finished changing mine thanks to your video. I was ready to call it a day and take it to the shop, but was able to follow along. The hardest part was dealing with that metal clip that holds it in. I couldn't see it and fiddled around with it but was able to pop it off by pulling it from the bottom. Thanks again!!!

    Thank you for posting this. I've watched it a few times as I've swapped the headlights on the 7. Definitely helps to have a video walk you through it. I will say my wife helped a great deal with the last change and her small hands made it a much quicker process!

    Thank you for the video. I was just able to replace the driver's side bulb on my wife's 2011 completely from under the hood. The only part I removed for better access was the fuse box cover. It was very fiddly, but I was done in about 20 minutes, start to finish. Be gentle. ;)

      I did it too. Then over time the light housing turned white. I originally thought the globes I put in were too hot. Turned out the globe was in on an angle. Shit job. Best to take the wheels off and do it while you can actually see what you are doing

    I just replaced the low beam bulbs in both sides and it is a bit of a pain. Thank you for the video, it helped to see what I was looking for. I would definitely do the passenger side first because you can how the retaining spring fits, it is more challenging to see from the driver side. Also be careful removing the retaining spring, I busted the clip on the driver side trying to get it off. thanks for the video!

      +Andy Lanier ,Andy what did you end up doing about the busted clip? I just tried to change my lights 2 days ago, but broke the plastic ring that holds the metal clip. I cant find a replacement part anywhere for that

    • @adlanier2
      @adlanier2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kay 20 I just didn't have anything to hook the retaining spring back into. I set the light socket (with bulb) in the hole (mine stayed reasonably well), closed the retaining spring (unclipped), and then just reinstalled the rubber boot. The boot seems to be holding it in well as I haven't noticed anything shifting around.

    Thanks for sharing, i would have fumbled around for a while before realizing the wheel well access was best. The wires were a little tight so it didn't leave a lot of play for you to work with the clip with the boot and wires in the way. The bulb actually goes into an adapter\collar for the rubber boot. I found it easiest to remove the boot by pulling the boot-tabs then feel for the base of the plug and pull it straight back removing it from the end of the boot-collar\adapter. Then its free to slide the boot off to better access the retaining clip. The clip has a loop on one end where you can push it in slightly and slide it up\down to unhinge, the bulb and adapter are then free to come out together. Swap the bulb on the adapter\boot-collar and reseat both into the lamp assembly, rotate until it drops in a bit and feel flat against the lamp assembly, then swing the clip over and secure it by pushing it in and sliding down\up. Slide the boot back over the plug and wires, paying attention to the face direction. Also, polarity didn't seem to make a difference, both poles of the plugs and bulbs were the same size and shape.

    Very good video. However, I have few tips after replacing both (driver and passenger bulbs).
    First, I would recommend taking the tire and the wheel hub off (it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes and it will give you much more room to work with and will make things much easier, especially if you don't have small hands).
    Second, if you plan on replacing both sides, start with passenger side. Once you take the rubber seal off you will see how the metal wire which holds the bulb is hooked (you won't be able to see it as clearly form the driver side as the hook is on the left side). So you don't really have to losses up that small screw but just unhook the metal wire.
    When working on driver's side I spent almost an hour with the tire
    on and only 20 minutes on passenger side (which includes taking the tire off and on).
    Have fun :)

      Taking tires out for a light bulb change????
      That is completely uncalled for, also unnecessary. Mazda has already complicated this supposedly simple task enough... No need to adding to their nonsense.

    Thank you very much for your video. A year ago I tried to replace the driver side light bulb and unfortunately I was not very successful since I broke the plastic housing for the metal clip that holds the light bulb in place. I was told I needed to replace the whole light bulb housing unit and decided to use crazy glue to hold it in place. For the passenger side I went to the dealer and had it replaced. It's been a year now and the light bulb on the driver side went out again. I hope this time I'm better prepared to replace it and just in case I have crazy glue by my side.

      +Robert Del Vecchio Update: Successfully replaced the driver side unfortunately did more damage and the crazy glue did not work this time. Everything was put back together with a lot of e-poxy. Next time I would have to replace the whole headlamp assembly.

    • @dgonsoulin
      @dgonsoulin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I just changed mine. This video doesn't really help much. A 2011 headlight is much harder to get to and if you don't know how the spring/clip comes on and off you are over your head! You will need a mirror to see how the spring/wire/clip latches and probably some long nose pliers too. Don't try this until you understand how it clips in! Also you will need some latex gloves to handle the new light as it will burn out faster if you get any body oil, dirt or grease on it.

    As everyone notes, this is a PTA. On my 2007, I've always gone from the top, but you have to somewhat be a contortionist and have a good sense of touch. TAKE NOTE AND MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE BULB IN THE PLASTIC SOCKET THE SAME WAY AS THE ONE YOU TOOK OUT, if it is 180° opposite, it will not seat correctly.

    What about when replacing with LED bulbs... These come with a large heatsink that interferes with the rubber boot.?

  • @Cpl27photo
    @Cpl27photo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    replacing a bulb on these cars is a waste of easliy an hour just messing around with not being able to get good access to the whole assembly. It doesn't really get easier the more you do, it just means you already know whats going on. You either take the wheel off, which i do not recommend, or you have to turn the wheel and then do the same for the other side just so you can reach in and not see while you are working on it. These bulbs are notorious for having short lives no matter what brand or power, and makes maintaining this vehicle a pain when you constantly have a bulb going out on one side or the other then having to replace both. I think these are rated at 150 hours which is not a lot when you figure how much you actually drive at night. I am currently looking at trying to replace these with LED bulbs but i cannot find anyone who has done it. It may be an experiment for me.

    Even with a big mirror, good flashlight, and a fair amount of mechanical ability, I broke the brittle passenger side plastic housing while trying to remove that stupid clip. Bought an aftermarket housing, which wasn't cheap, and as I wasn't ambitious enough to change the housing (you have to remove bumper cover), I had my local garage do it. So it was a few hundred dollars in parts and labor, ouch, when the only problem was a burned out bulb. It would be really helpful if someone would have an entire headlight assembly out of the car to show us exactly how the clip holds the bulb in. Every video I've seen doesn't focus on the hardest part of this repair, the clip...the lighting usually sucks and you can't get a camera in close enough to be helpful. Now the driver side bulb is out...I'm taking it to the shop before I break this housing ha-ha.
    One glaring fault of this video is that the bulb was changed and completely reinstalled before turning it on to see if it works???? You should NEVER assume a new bulb is good, or that you have the correct voltage to the bulb (you could have a wiring or other voltage problem)...so a basic check, BEFORE reassembly, is to simply install bulb and make sure it lights up....THEN you put it all back together. Someone already mentioned using latex gloves to keep skin oil or grease off the glass part of the bulb, unless you think you can do the whole repair holding the bulb by the metal part.
    UPDATE: Did find a closeup of how the clip works, but the possibility of breaking the housing is still high, seems taking the whole assembly out is the way to go.....
