    A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
    I've been trying to put together a live setup for a while, something I could do an entire set with. It would need flexibility in audio routing, good sounds, lots of hands-on control, and to be performance-oriented at its core. This is my first attempt at making that setup.
    At the centre of the setup is the Elektron Octatrack, which is performing at least four roles. The Octatrack is the sequencer for all the other synths. It's also a sampler that excels at loops and time stretching; here, I'm running four sets of samples mostly out of the Octatrack's cue outputs. Then, on the other side of the mixer (more on that in a moment), the Octatrack is acting as a master-level mixer, allowing me to use its amp envelopes to make the constrain and pulse all the output from the mixer. And finally, this end-of-chain section allows me to add scenes to the master output, e.g. effects for a variety of transitions and wild, weird moments. It's incredible how versatile, unique, and powerful the Octatrack is. There's truly nothing else like it.
    In the middle of that audio chain I've added another mixer, the Playdifferently Model One. The Model One has plenty of inputs, two stereo sends and returns, low-pass and high-pass filter on every track, master low-pass and high-pass filters, drive on every track, and more. Plus, it just sounds really great. I needed more audio inputs for synths but what I ended up getting was a device that, in and of itself, is playable and hands-on.
    For synths, I chose the Moog Minitaur, Dreadbox Typhon, and Dreadbox Nymphes. These were chosen first and foremost for their sound (nothing beats that Minitaur bass), but also because of their small footprints and lots of knobs for real-time control. While I mostly used the Model One's filters to control the Typhon and Nymphes' sounds, I imagine I'll be reaching for them a lot in the future.
    And for effects, I went with the Empress Reverb and the Erica Synths Zen Delay. The Empress is among my very favourite reverbs and can do a variety of great sounds; the Zen Delay isn't necessarily my favourite delay, but it is perfect live-performance device with perfectly tuned controls. I may add a third effect using the Model One's cue outs and one of the unused tracks in the future.
    Altogether, I really enjoyed this setup and was happy with how quickly the song cohered. The temptation is always there to abandon these sort of live-set ideas, but I'll try to make at least one more track with this (or a similar) setup!
    Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    Anyone can set up a bunch of scenes and go to town with the Octatrack. But it’s another thing completely to see such a well orchestrated and assembled track with several pieces of gear working together all doing what they have to do.
    Definitely inspirational. Definitely exquisite. And I hope to one day get to reach something as well controlled and put together this. Cheers!

    Hey Jay. Great tune as usual. I really love the filtered sample and hold lfo part in the middle. I need to dust off the OT! I was wondering if you have ever done a jam with both the zen delay and the cosmos. I really like the sound of both of them and imagine that having both of them would make some insane textures. The feedback on the zen delay seems like a whole other instrument in and of itself and fed into the cosmos could be really amazing. On the other hand feeding the cosmos into the zen would be amazing with that filter. I'd love to see what you'd make from having those 2 devices chained together.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Model One's price is a little hairy, yeah, but if you just think of it as seven LPFs, seven HPFs, six drives and EQs, etc., plus all analog circuitry, it seems a pretty fair price for what they're offering (and the thing is built like a tank!). And thanks!

    Hi Jay, this is great! May I ask how you manage to get so many musical bars in one pattern (seemingly more than 64 steps)? Is it purely by putting the speed of individual tracks at x1/2 and x1/4 (and losing some resolution that way but making up for it through the arpeggiator)? Or am I missing something? Thanks

    • @JayHosking

    That's a really cool setup. I like how you are using the cue outs and the Model One as a sub-mixer for the Octatrack. Is it just Octatrack to PA then after that? The Model one is expensive but it sure sounds nice!

    • @JayHosking

  • @closerau
    @closerau 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great work, been thinking of getting a model 1 myself. Was wondering are you using compression on the master track? Since you’re using 4 channels, how come you didn’t go with 1.4 instead of 1?

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I probably would have gotten 1.4 if I'd seen it available, although I always wondered if I'd need more tracks sometime. Somebody had an open-box deal on the 1.
      No compression on the 1, as it's going into the Octatrack, but there's compression on the Octa as it heads into the DAW.

      Of course, Stu! I recorded into my standard audio interface, the Qu-16! One of the goals was to design a setup that had only stereo outs, so it'd be easier to potentially play live, so I could have recorded to nearly anything with the setup, though.

      @@JayHosking Thanks! I take it you weren't interested in multitracking into the daw for this one? (Of course I'm asking as I assess my own live setup and decide what is/isn't important to me.)

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stujay I mean, multi-tracking is so useful for a proper mix, but the goal was to get it down to something that a house PA system could handle (rather than a bunch of stereo DIs). The other advantage of having everything feed to a stereo out is that I can use master-level effects for performance. It does mean I have to mostly get the mix right before recording, though.
