Well the cam is 6000, ok, but the lenses are also expensive on Leica, 6k-11k.
And a M11 kit with 5 lenses can reach 50-60k.
You can get everything you need in 20k with other brands and end up with better results.
      And those colors are subjective.
In 13k you can have a whole Red Komodo rig.

Panasonic is a great option for those who want similar performance without the Leica tax. Leica cameras are awesome though. The extra premium you pay for the experience can definitely be worth it if you're into the way a camera feels.

I guess it's a fair assessment. There's great cameras out there at the moment and Leica has a premium price tag. But hey, if you can comfortably afford it AND you enjoy using it AND it gets the job done, why not? I really don't get why some people feel the need to defend the brand they use so much. Like, you need to be almost apologetic when using Leica ("I know it's overprices, but...") or people using other brands feeling superior because they've spent less. Why can't people just be happy with the gear they have instead of focussing on what others use.

    • @normandy2501

Likely because they're looking for a way (consciously or subconsciously) to justify whatever amount of money they've invested into these things since they aren't cheap in the long-term. An attack, or even a good faith comparison/critique on a camera is then taken personally by a lot of people.

@@normandy2501 On the other hand, people who can't afford it see it as a waste of money or just get plain envious about the fact that even non serious but wealthy people can afford it.

I know this is a year old but the reality is today there are cameras from canon and Sony that are also $6,000… even the canon r5 is around $4,000. With the exception of crazy good AF, they don’t really offer much more. Need to look at the bigger picture. And since this review, the SL2-S with the latest firmware is in a good spot for people wanting the simple no nonsense menus and great built quality of the SL series and the Leica color science.

After looking back on some old wedding photos, I realized that I much preferred the look of the pictures from my cameras that had 16-30mp. I looked at a lot of photos, and the ones that I really liked were shot with a Leica. I bought a leftover new TL2 and truly became a Leica enthusiast (I do have the overpriced viewfinder). I ended up selling my Sony A7R3 to buy a barely used 24mp Leica SL. I have to agree with you, the colors are truly amazing. My only complaint is that, on occasion, I miss phase detection autofocus; but contrast is so much more accurate I am getting used to focusing differently.

I had a M10-P, but traded it in & got the SL2-S + Leica 24-70 combo. The main reason for this is I just could not get on with the Rangefinder, but more so I just enjoy using an EVF, specially how it makes nailing your exposure so easy. I just kept having to look at my screen to see if the M10-P metered correctly and often it did not expose like I expected (tried all the metering modes, exposure comp used.. it's just not consistent). Really enjoying the SL2-S & 35 Summicron combo with the L to M adapter.

good review Evan ! Leicas are expensive but the haptics / ergonomics and general joy of using make it worth it for me. How about trading the SL2 for the SL2-S? A few used ones started appearing on eBay. I have an SL2-S with the new SL24-70 lens. It's a beast and low light performance is great.

    • @rubelukeable

I hear you. Just got the SL2S with the 24-70 bundle (with Free M to L adapter until October). Saved $1050. Good deal with the bundle. I can adapt my 35 1.4 and 50 1.4 Summilux lenses with the great EVF and IBIS of the SL2S. After using the Leica SL2S, the R5 and A7R3, feel like toy cameras. With that said, they do have amazing autofocus, and if you're a sports or wildlife photographer, don't get the SL2S. But for my purposes, the SL2S is perfect. There's something to be said about the look and feel of a Leica.

Just found your channel from watching another photographer, who mentioned you - Jason Webber (kind of fell off the face of the earth the last few months). If the Leica brand is what you like, stay with it, they hold their value, sell it and get the SL2-S and another Sigma lens. Plus, I can tell you like being associated with the brand. You walk into a shoot with a Leica and it will snowball into more business. I bought a Tudor big block chronograph 15 years ago for $1200, it's worth over $10K now, and I get stopped all the time by collectors. Going to check out your clothing line, maybe I'll get a sweatshirt, it's cold today in Chicago.

Opinion Warning!!! We're all friends here right? Leica is definitely a niche/boojie camera brand. I don't really see myself getting a Leica unless they come way down in price. I would love to have a full frame range finder style camera, so I'd be looking at the Q2 or the M series if anything. Just not the Leica price. I think that Sony and Canon could easily get you similar/better results and features for a lot less money (especially in the low light performance)….. Of course that’s if they were interested in that body style of camera again. Love the content and learn a lot from watching. Thank You!

Canon, Sony, Nikon. No soul. Leica is on another level build wise. Plus a firmware update is coming to shore up the focus system etc. It’s already out for the SL2-S. Incredible features coming. Leica glass is also on par if not exceeding Canon, Nikon and Sony. All these systems including Fuji and Olympus are great. But when I pick up my SL2, I’m like wow can’t wait to start shooting.

I keep toying with the idea of getting an SL2-S to complement my Q2, but find myself thinking "Why bother?" The Q2 is giving me everything I need except a long-telephoto capability. And the Q2 is emphatically not a "luxury" camera- it's pure function. Even my wife, who was previously averse to "fancy" cameras with "all those knobs and dials", loves it.

      Poor AF

  • @bensalomon3272
    @bensalomon3272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wanna do this mistake too.
I am coming from APS-C anyway, so the noise of the 47MP are as much as the same as 24 on a smaller sensor I guess.
    At least more or less.
The only things that bothers me are that Sigma have not released a 70-200 2.8 L-Mount and the battery life.
Also the AF is a problem, but my old APS-C camera doesn't have a very capeable AF as well and I only need it for longer zoom lenses, because of focus by wire it sometimes slows you down too much to turn and turn and turn the focus wheel.
So it is only for the long end a problem.
I would use it for landscapes and street where you sometimes need AF and sometimes not.
I would also buy it used from retailers, so there is a saving of 1/4th to 1/3rd.
But would be an R5 or A7RIV be cheaper? For sure, but not that much in the overall conclusion of my lense set up(of course Leica lenses but also other L and M mount lenses).
Also the SL2 got something, its design, its built quality and yes, that it is a Leica comes in as well.
But like Samuel L. Streetlife mentioned in its videos "shit leica camera owners say"(with a lot Leica owners making fun of themselves) shows, there are some too pretentious, some can laugh about themselves and some are using them as tools, without making a big deal out of it.
Maybe with a SL with the 61MP from the Sigma FP L they will solve some problems with battery and AF.
But yeah, definitely not something for everyone I guess, but thats a good thing, we should buy what makes us more creative.

As much as I romanticize being a Leica shooter, I think being tangential with it and going for the Panasonic S line is the move for me. You having the SL did spark my initial interest in L mount cameras though so I have to thank you for that. As far as Leicas go though, I’ll probably stick to my M mount film camera for the time being. It’s enough of a fun/passion camera to keep me happy. The Panny will be for the professional stuff.

Got one, love it, thrilled i bought it. Evan you’re absolutely wrong on the price tag and I really do not get the Leica is expensive line when referring to this camera. The body is on a par with Canon and Nikon. And the ‘for that money i’d get a xxxx reinforces that people are happy to pay £5000 plus on a body. Yes the lenses are expensive but I can’t afford the Leica lenses right now and do perfectly well with Sigma. Get a Leica with a 24-90 then get a 1DX or R5 with appropriate focal lengths and the price difference isn’t that great. As good as the Japanese brands are, it’s like their cars - great, until you feel the build quality and material quality of German.
It’s beautiful to look at, incredible to hold, the feel of it is awesome, the lack of buttons just prove less is more and the infinite customisation of it is a joy.

@@RiposteThis If you mean based on overall specifications and performance I agree. However. There’s people with zero interest in video and never will have. I’ve never even switched on video mode on mine - zero interest in shooting video. So if the Sony is better at that, great for those that it means something to. Many don’t do action photography, and the Sony focusing is better than the Leica. That matters zero to those that don’t shoot action. There’s never any ‘best’ product. Too many factors and personal choices determine what’s ‘best’ not a reviewer. But agree the Sony is a great piece of kit if all those features matter.

@@nickdardalis3535 Everything you're typing is saying that, I don't care that I'm getting less for my money, I just want the Leica. Personal choices are opinions, the facts are that the Canon R5 and the Sony a1 are both better cameras at the same price point and $3k cheaper. There is literally no refuting that. It doesn't matter if you don't need a camera that does action, but you're paying the SAME AMOUNT as a camera that does do amazing AF, but also does every single other thing better, as well as a significantly better sensor. Hell, if you don't do action photography, you could get the GFX100S from Fujifilm, 100mp incredible photos for $500 cheaper...
The only reason to buy a Leica, is because you specifically want to own a Leica. You're not buying it because it's the best camera, you're buying it to say you have a Leica. It does nothing better than the competition in that price point, and it does nothing better than a camera that is $3k less than it. Hell, it only out performs the Z7ii in maximum video resolution. I've used the SL2, it does nothing better and the images aren't special in comparison to anything else high end on the market. That's just the truth and I have no problem with people wanting to spend their hard earned money on the camera they want regardless of specs and performance. Hell, I could afford the a1 but I like shooting Nikon so I have a Z7ii. My problem comes when people are trying to talk like the Leica is some holy grail camera that is so special and everything photo it takes is breath taking. It's not, almost every pro photographer knows it's not, that's why there are almost no pro photographers using Leicas.

That's why I sold all my sony gear, it was great on the paper, does the job, amazing iq but terrible ergos... And I precise, I don't own any leica, I had to sold my Q2 cause i needed money sadly.

    • @RiposteThis
      @RiposteThis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@gwencahue6269 I’ll agree with you that Sony ergos are not great. They prioritize being the smallest over what is actually comfortable to use. But when you compare it to the ergos of canon or Nikon the Leica is still quite bad. No flip out screen on a $6k camera is ridiculous, it’s essentially a rectangle with a non form fitting grip on it. I don’t care if people want to use a Leica but truth is they aren’t special or better than any other camera company out there, it’s the name you’re paying for and that’s it. Same goes for Hasselblad, they charge more than the GFX 100s, have significantly worse ergonomics and use the same sensor that the Fuji GFX 50R uses but the 50R costs like $2k less.

Any input would be great. Thank you

Wouldn't it be much cleverer to buy the Lumix body equivalent and buy the Leica lenses instead? But in the end I understand the appeal of the Leica Body, they feel fucking amazing! As always great video bro!

I have the SL2 as well, I love the camera, the colors and photo and video quality is amazing, and the experience of using it is also amazing. But the autofocus on this camera is just not good compared to the offering from Sony and Canon. At times I wish I have the Sony A7S3 for the video but then I won’t be able to get the color from it so sadge. I also own the Leica Q so we basically have the same cameras XD. Also if I were to buy again, I would not like you. I would get the Canon R5 Bc if does everything and better, but I will miss the Leica colors

See for me Leica is a photojournalists camera, no matter which one you pick, the look, the feel, the performance for me all scream journalism. Incredible detail and quality, but i feel like its a very narrow focus on certain features and still rides on the hand built quality compared to others. Just my thoughts though

Why don't you try out a canon R5? Its halb the price (if you don't buy it completly new) and the new RF glass is fire! :D

Not good of lowlight performance because of higher resolution mega pixels it has. That's why leica stays on 24mp on for a long time because of that issue.

It came down to the SL2 and the 1DX3…it was one aspect that decided which one I would buy: Durability. I needed a body that I didn’t have to worry about at all and that’s where the 1DX3 won out. I still long for that SL2 though…that Leica look is real 🤤

Sorry mate, I am confused! You know there is an awesome camera maker name "Sony". Their cameras are very capable in many ways. Likewise, those cameras can switch back and forth the still and video photography very quickly. Actually Sony invented the solution way before Leica did, just kidding mate... 😂😂

6000usd for a leica its totally fine lol...i always viewed the leica like a little trophy kind of camera...its like you will drive ur japanese car to work everyday since its reliable and fuel efficient but on week-ends, you would want to drive your exotic car made by an european as the experience is something else haha. So for me one day to buy a leica, its to please myself and i wont use it for work as no one can even pay this amount of money in my country to even justify this price.

  • @sticky8579

But the rolex in everyway is better than a tudor technically.
The everyday sony and canon are just better than the leica in many ways technically.
Leica is like a patek. Canon and sony are like the rolex
Patek cant do what a rolex could do everyday. As an everyday watch the rolex is far superiour to the patek but the patek is a fancy piece of hardware.
To me that analogy makes more sense.

    • @kamakf00t
      @kamakf00t ปีที่แล้ว

      .
I guess I’d question in what way the Patek is “just fancy hardware”.
The thought, ingenuity, execution, and finishing is far superior to Rolex. Rolex used to be a tool watch based company that through luck and marketing and brilliant high quality watch making, beats out Patek and everyone else’s market share, marketing, and mass production. Quality control is also very good. But , are they really much better than omega or Tudor, let alone the king of watchmaking, Patek ? Absolutely not. (Yes, I know Tudor is “owned”by Rolex ). I think when focus is on function over form, and carrying ethos and design language, you can and should demand a premium. As does Patek , as does Rolex, when compared to “equally good” brands that also get the job done.
The argument is almost never ending. A casio tells the time more accurately than Patek or Rolex or Tudor. And at 1000X less of the price .
Ultimately, you’re very correct in assigning likeness of Patek vs. Rolex likeness , imho.

All Leicas are overpriced since all of the new "L" lenses are made in Japan by Sigma. The aluminum body parts are cu
in Germany, BUT where do the sensors, processors, monitors, and the electronics come from?
From what I heard, almost everything Leica is made in Portugal and Austria, but this guy doesn`t care since he is an AmaZombie who gets his 3% from J. Bezos, the worst businessman in the world.
