  • I coincide with Lee Barrett in Hangzhou and Shanghai while covering a launching event of a new EV from a recognized Chinese brand, while taking our flight back to Shenzhen, I took the opportunity to talk about some interesting topics, like the reasons that move us to make content about real China. The conversation was divided into 2 episode, this is the first one. Enjoy it!

I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US.
We have happened to have a friendly casual conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they told me.
They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere, every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason.
Then I asked them about many TH-cams videos showing many interesting things about China. Don't they ever watch those video? The answer from them is their media and government said those TH-cams video showing positive about China are all lied and paid by Chinese government to create them.
All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.

Thank you for making these videos about the truth, although this type of video is not favored by Western social media platforms.
As a Chinese, I am proud of my country. When I was young, my family was very poor, and we were still cooking with burning wood. We didn't have a private car, and the house was also very old. But now we have two cars at home, our houses are new and big, and every household in the village has built new houses and has their own cars. I am grateful for all the changes and efforts made by my country.
If you are someone who harbors hostility or misunderstandings towards China, you may criticize me for being brainwashed, but I don't care, no one cares about the nonsense of pessimists.
Perhaps you have heard that 90% of people here recognize and support political parties, and I am also one of them. In real life, we discuss which policies are wrong and criticize every leader. However, social media platforms do not want to take responsibility for incorrect statements, so they will control them. However, we can freely discuss all of this in our daily lives.
Looking back at the more than a decade since I grew up, my living conditions have been getting better and society has become safer. What else do I have to complain about?
When I was young, there were many people here who robbed, used drugs, and even committed crimes using firearms. But what I have witnessed with my own eyes is that robbery and theft are severely punished, drug traffickers are severely punished, and firearms are under control.
More than a decade ago, I dared not go out at night because there would be robberies. My grandfather was also cheated out of money by a drug addict. When I was at school, my mother called and told me that someone in town had killed someone with a rifle, and the neighboring town had a large-scale conflict with another town using homemade bombs.
At that time, I couldn't imagine the beautiful life now. It was all so unreal, but it did happen.
As a Chinese, I am proud of my country, but we are not arrogant. We only want a good life, and we hope to return to the top of the world like we have done for five thousand years. We hope to live in harmony with all countries, and if they appreciate our achievements, we will be very happy.
"kingly way" and "hegemonic" are two completely different routes.kingly way means becoming the best person and getting along harmoniously with others, working hand in hand with them.
hegemonic means stepping on the heads of others, demanding that everyone must submit to him and accept his manipulation.
For five thousand years, China has chosen the former. Even though our civilization and strength were already the world's top in the Tang Dynasty, just like the United States today, we did not interfere with the affairs of other countries. If a country sends us a gift, we will give it back with a higher value gift. We will not interfere with their internal affairs. If they are friendly to us, we are also very willing to help them.
So I hope that Western audiences, after learning the truth, will understand that we are not competing with them for who can do better, but rather hoping that we can learn from each other's strengths and become better together.

It’s off the topic maybe, but I don’t think it’s really about China or Chinese government. Many westerners tend to be critical and paranoid about everything. It’s the attitude and philosophy towards life, at least in China most people don’t want to get near negative people who like to complain all the time. The negative people will suck off all of your energy, and they can’t see a tiny bit of positivity in life.
There’re many people criticizing the Chinese government even in China, it’s not about the criticism, and you need to be concrete enough for the matter, not just to spread anti government stuff. Moreover, Chinese people are seeing huge improvements in their life, and remember how many wars China has been through in the last century. China is still a developing country and there’s nothing wrong that Chinese people want to live a peaceful life, and for having this peaceful life Chinese need a stable and capable government.

Is criticising their own Government the only freedom they want more than their own personal freedom, such as open owning guns. Therefore these western citizen rather get killed with the freedom to carry gun. This is a very simplistic view .
Personal freedom is more & very complicated, you had to take culture, religion, government, etc into consideration. WE can start by comparing light for light and you will find out freedom is not as simple as it is.
Many American died daily due to their relaxing gun laws but not others had strict gun laws.
Lets take it up to another level and ask these question, why is US spending billions to slowdown China & the US keep telling & pointing finger at others, warn and bans other when they not follow US instruction, etc..This is interfering with others freedom. The only reason why these westerner keep using such reasons it is because they are shallow or just haters.

You are doing propaganda tho, you are showing the good and beautiful places and things about China, but not showing regular city streets where there is fair bit of shoddy looking construction and you do not venture to countryside or so to say ''lower levels'' of Chinese society to see how they live. China is developed in some aspects but this development is much less spread around then in the West where generally the poor people do not live in extreme poverty like in China. Also not all Chinese projects make financial sense and some of them are just for show. Then again I also do not like the trend in the West now where there are also a lot of propaganda channels on youtube that say that all is bad in China and all projects are failures, all EVs are burning down and all construction is tofu dreg... Certainly it is not true, if it was so Three Gorges Dam would have collapsed already and there would be nuclear reactor meltdowns all the time and fast speed trains getting wrecked if all were ''tofu dreg'' projects and all was ''burning'' or ''collapsing''. Balanced view on both sides is sadly what is lacking. China still has many issues, West also has its issues and me being from country which also still has a lot of issues but has developed a lot in last 30 years I understand the want to showcase the good things about the country, what has been built and how the wealthiest part of the country lives now. I see the same with Russia and massive propaganda campaign to popularize Moscow for example, while we know there are a lot of problems elsewhere. Honesty from all sides could go a long way...

I doubt it is a propaganda if people just want to show how their life is in China. However, according to the west, only when you say that you’re living a miserable life in China, then it’s not propaganda. So the logic is that the west doesn’t want to see Chinese people are living a good life, and they are constantly saying that they care about human rights and stuff, which is pure hypocrisy.
Moreover, no one is saying China is perfect, if people are showing real life experience in China is “propaganda”, then most people in China are living in the propaganda. Anyway, it totally depends on how you think, no where is perfect but China is doing fine no matter how people think.
It’s also up to you to think that Chinese are showing off or what, for sharing the development of China. Actually, Chinese are used to the high tech development, at least for me I don’t care how others think about the technology and stuff in China, they’re not living in China and may not even set foot in China for a lifetime. The only thing they can experience is the made in China products that the west is constantly bashing about.

There are three ways to tell if a TH-camr gets paid by the Chinese government aka "Shilltuber"
    1. They started their TH-cam channel in Sanya Hainan(This is where the recruitment and meetings take place). If you look their first videos you will see they all started in that city.
    2. They only talk about the good things and not the bad things about living in China (they cannot mention negative things as this violates their contract).
    3. They don't even speak chinese or very little so they live in their own bubble in a major city (This keeps them disconnected from the politics and ensures they lack awareness of social or political issues).

One vlogger quit after he had to praise a place he had not even visited. Others admitted that tveir transportation and accomodation Was paid by these agencies.
If you have already been to China, you certainly know that these videos and most comments as well are so ridicolously staged that it is almost fun to watch. I assume, you don't need a proof for the third point.

      Bad luck for you!
These ccp sponsored videos adress three different target groups:
      1. Western guys who are dissatisfied with their government, don't know much about China and seek for "alternatives" (present China as an efficient , orderly and safe country)
      2. People from southern countries from Asia, Afrika and South America, who haven't been abroad and whose countries hd not only posexperiences with the West in their colonial past. (present China as a peaceful nation without any colonial past)
      3. 50c wumao junk
      Bad luck for you:
TH-cam is open for everybody and also Chinese critical of their government and laowai who are/have been living in China comment on these videos.
The case is clear, the videos and comments content always follow the same narrative, which is dictated by the Communist Party and does not really correspond to reality. China wants to play a role and present itself to the world as something it is not.

“ Chinese can’t criticize the government “ -- that’s century lies . I was in 1973 ,my parents criticized government every day In public area , like in a train , but since 1980s , right now the Chinese social media, we criticize the government every second, and nobody care if you are not going to use your influence to overthrown government. I don’t why you are still suppose we can’t criticize the government after you live in China so long
