Hate them. Though, I'm not using an amp/dac so there's a chance that I'm not pushing them to their full potential. That said, as they are now, they're trash. They sound "boxy" like crinnacle is describing here, and lack base and sub base. The highs hurt too. My cheap bluetooth headphones (tuned) sound better than these.
I have both. I think HD620S wins in treble performance. FT1 is a bit grainy and rough up there. They are quite close in the bass and mids. I think HD620S does sound more open though and has better imaging. Overall, I think FT1 sounds fuller and richer and is a more fun headphone. HD620S sounds cleaner and is a more reference headphone. If you just want something fun, FT1 is a better value. If you want to step it up in terms of clarity and get closer to the sound of open headphones, HD620S is worth considering. Personally, I disagree with crinacle that it is below HD560S in technical performance. I think HD620S is quite a bit better - more in line with the HD600 series in sound quality - and yet it also sounds just about as open and spacious as the HD560S to my ears.
Closed backs are great for specific task of tracking vocals. The German Maestro GMP 8.35 D Mobile actually operates right around $250, is basically like a plussed up Sennheiser HD 25 and is made of the industrial nylon that they make power tools out of so you can run it over with a truck and not destroy it. Would love to hear what you think of them.
Surprised that the DT 700 Pro X wasn’t mentioned in the comparison section considering that it tames some of that treble spike from the 770 and is also closer to the 620s’ price than the 770 is
I feel like there is such a hole in the market of $300 flagship closed backs. I wish more companies would copy the maxwell and take a wireless closed back and just dsp to the target. After hearing a ton of closed backs at canjam, I feel like I've kinda lost hope in wired stuff and the FT1's are also super bright and not for everyone.
@yakucho8123 Yeah, I was surprised by the measurements not showing the bright treble as well. I think its because of the soundstage issues many complained about. It's like the bright treble isn't coming from the center image or something like that.
@yakucho8123 on my Zen stack, I felt the brightness came forward only after I've connected the dac and amp with a balanced interconnect. It made me happy because on RCA interconnect, they were a lot tamer than DT1770 Pro, and measurements didn't support that observation entirely.
I honestly absolutely love these. Build quality feels better than the other series 600 headphones to me (and a looot better than 500 series). Detail and soundstage do actually come close enough to the 600s to me, though the sound profile is indeed different. I bought them on a sale and use them quite a bit, even when I do have the option of grabbing my 600s or listening to my speaker setup. I do recommend people checking them out in a store, if it is a match to your ears and seals well, I feel it is a total winner.

These were an absolute game changer for me in comfort. The angled drivers and large oval pads fit perfectly for me. I tried some verison of the beyer dynamic heapdhones and they were possibly the worst headphones for comfort ive ever worn.

Will you "review" the HD490 Pro? It seems like the best headphone for a "fun" sound from sennheiser. And it can even sound more balanced if you just change to the other pads included
I purchased the Sennheiser HD 660s swapped out the pads with my HD 599 headphones as I really didn't like the stock pads which sounded too warm for me, the velour pads give them a bit more clarity, and EQ'd them so the bump in the mid-bass and the lower mid-range isn't so prominent and to get rid of some of the boxy tonality of them and I couldn't be happier, they're a lot more enjoyable.
SRH1540 sounds fantastic if you tame that bass a bit with EQ, otherwise they are too bassy. Once the bass is brought down, they compete with HD620S, but the latter does narrowly edge them out due to better soundstage. And no - the Shures do not have a V-shaped signature - they are only excessive in the low end, not in the mids and highs.
Based on your list, I was actually expecting you to mention the m70x at $300. I'm interested on any passing thoughts on that given the m50x is considered ok at its price here (c- on the list) whereas the m70x rises to b- on the list.

I'm still curious if a quality open back headphone with a Bluetooth dongle would make for a better experience? Has anyone ever addressed with issue?
I don't really watch movies, but I imagine the soundstage would be wider and you might get that feeling of hearing sounds from all around you, if the movie is mixed well in Stereo. well , actually there are actually some decent competition from " Pioneer DJ " ( that is the full brand name , not Pioneer ) , the HDJ-X10 and HDJ-X7 IMHO are let down by the brands image , they are actually both very fine audiophile headphones and both very nice tool for both DJ and in Studio usage
@yakucho8123 I've only listened to the E3 briefly so I can't comment on it too much but I thought it was mostly excellent however a little to bright for me personally.
SRH840 has a somewhat V-shaped sound signature and does not compete with HD620S in sound quality. The Shures sound a bit muddy in the bass and rough in the treble, and also don't sound as open and spacious as HD620S.
I am still looking for the best closed back under USD 500.... Have tried so many but always went back to the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (250 ohms). The DT 700 Pro is is not bad with a brighter (more powerful amp) also the new Fiio FT1 is fun but that's a kinda 1 trick pony (nice bass that's it!). Hifiman Closed backs are terrible... even their "cheaper" open backs. 🍭
Azurys and HD620S are very close in sound quality. I think I prefer HD620S though, as it sounds a bit more spacious and has the treble at a more neutral level. I find Azurys just a little too dark for my tastes. However, Azurys does beat HD620S in bass quality.
looks like it has honk between 500-800hz. One should never go honk. Especially for 350. But I have not heard it in person. But if crin hears it and the graph shows it, bad sign IMO.
Why were the Meze 99 not mentioned? They are at roughly the same price point. And the FiiO FT1 could be looked at too, since you look at some lower-priced headphones in here as well.
Back when Crin initially reviewed the 99s, they were very bass heavy, distinctly v-shaped and their technicalities also were not exceptional for the price. It's why he didn't think that highly of them during the coverage. I can confirm his impression and measurements, used one for many years, mainly because the build and style were that good and I could use oratory1990s EQ as a starting point to address the shortcomings. Would love to see him test the "new" 99s though, they did a stealthy revision in late 2022 and by changing the internals made it far more neutral and closer to his personal target (though still somewhat bass emphasized). Bought a 99 Midnight on Black Friday (sold my previous Classics a while back but was missing that style) and can confirm that it sounds far more pleasant to my ears, requiring far less agressive EQ to get close to my prevered target. As far as I know, he never tested the revision and likely simply didn't deem it a necessary comparsion because of that. In fairness to him, Meze was very stealthy about it and we don't even know when exactly they made the change, this was merely found by people actually taking their headphones apart after hearing differences. Beyond those who actually read forum chatter on Meze specifically, this fact is likely rather unknown. Also makes second hand a quagmire and I personally never liked stealth changes without a new name or model number because of that.

@yakucho8123 I've only listened to the E3 briefly so I can't comment on it too much but I thought it was mostly excellent however a little to bright for me personally.
there is this little company that makes decent close-backs called Dan Clark Audio...
What city is your store in
Hi I'm new in the hobby. Just hi thank you for teaching me the basics.
Crin, review your best wireless over ear headphone akg n700 mark 2
There is also the rode nth 100 that are less than $200 and they are closed back.
Does it headphone?
SRH840 has a somewhat V-shaped sound signature and does not compete with HD620S in sound quality. The Shures sound a bit muddy in the bass and rough in the treble, and also don't sound as open and spacious as HD620S.
i really need a good pair of closed back to reduce the noise bleed for other people around me in the house
Can you do the Sony MDR-M1?
Azurys and HD620S are very close in sound quality. I think I prefer HD620S though, as it sounds a bit more spacious and has the treble at a more neutral level. I find Azurys just a little too dark for my tastes. However, Azurys does beat HD620S in bass quality.
Please review the fiio ft1
I loved your review! Please, come back from retirement :D
Using the Shure840A(no amp) for this video and there great
6:00 mentioning all these closed back without mentioned ft1 is kinda surprising
imo the dt 770 pro is much worse than ft1
crinacle is outdated hes late on headphones
1000xm5 headphone review please!
It's the best
Have you heard the HD 380 PRO ?
To me it is way more comfortable than the 280 PRO and even sounds a bit better !
The FT1 comes in flip the whole table
These headphones are amazing
Agreed. I bought a pair a couple months ago and I couldn't be happier.
Be happy!!
what on earth is the 620s bro
Fiio FT1?
Yo can someone prefer any headphone that has noice reduction passively with good sounding?(Max 300 dolar tho) thanks!
I thought you were done with TH-cam?
SONY MDR - M1 ! !
looks like it has honk between 500-800hz. One should never go honk. Especially for 350. But I have not heard it in person. But if crin hears it and the graph shows it, bad sign IMO.
The Huh Duh Six Hunge 0s by ole mate Senny!
Why were the Meze 99 not mentioned? They are at roughly the same price point. And the FiiO FT1 could be looked at too, since you look at some lower-priced headphones in here as well.
Meze 99 are horrible only closed backs hifiman are worse
Dankpods really brainwashed me, I now keep calling the the, huh duh six hunge o's
By ole mate Senny!
Focal Lensys probably is the best closed back under $1k
I have the shures 1540 and the headband is flaking due to it being fake leather.
I forgot I got these need to find them😅
