MMCX vs U.FL Connectors for DJI FPV, Analog and RUSH Cherry Antennas

  • There are those that hate on MMCX connectors. Then there are those that hate on U.FL connectors. The truth it, neither of these people are right. It’s all about where you should use each type of connector and how you stress-relied your FPV antennas so that your connectors don’t come undone or worse, get broken. I have always had good luck with both of these types of connectors because I’ve been very careful with placement and stress-relief.
    Now, with the DJI Digital FPV System, I’ve found the MMCXs used for the antennas a bit challenging. This is mainly due to the fact that the air unit is so big, making antenna placement much more difficult. In this video I go over my thought process on how I solved this problem on my Impulse RC Apex HD DJI FPV build. I ended up using the new RUSH Cherry LHCP antennas with MMCX right angle connectors to solve the problem. Make sure to watch the entire video as there are some important points regarding the different in length of the RUSH FPV MMCX connectors versus those of the DJI antennas. There is a way to solve this however, so pay close attention.

      Those can be tricky to unplug. I suggest a nice set of needle nose pliers that are not too pointy and get a good grip. Then, an assertive sharp tug will do the trick.

    hi Danny. This is so practical dude👍i have the Dji HD system in the mail 🤩 (my Fatshark HD2'S are feeling nervous) ...as you can imagine, this is helpful for a 1st HD build. I was woundering if i would buy heavy extension connectors. Is that Brain 3d tpu mount good for most 5" frame types ?
    Think I'll order 1 or 2 because that mount you've done looks duarable and has great clearance. it would be $illy to change to RHCP right away, though i do have an immersion rc 13DB RHCP patch i want to flush mount on the goggles later. cheers

    nice video. i use singularity antenna for my build, with 90 degree mmcx, and they work wonderfully

      I might try singularities at some point. They are very expensive. The reason I avoid them initially.

    According to store.dji.com/product/dji-fpv-air-unit-mmcx-to-sma-cable the DJI pigtail is MMCX - SMA, but there is some odd fine print stating `Please note that the SMA Adapter Cable has an RP-SMA jack `, does it mean the cable is incorrectly named and is really MMCX to RP-SMA?

    How are the plastic base holding up? Mine broke, it couldn’t handle a hard landing.

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The TPU mount itself is fine and so are the plastic brackets. I haven't broken any of those. However, I do keep breaking the antenna stalks. I'm currently searching for a new solution.

    Nice video. I'm quite new to the hobby.... how much more range do these antennas give compared to the stock dji ones?

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I don't feel they give you more range. I run them because the setup is lighter and easier to manage than dealing with extensions and SMAs.

    Did those cherry antrnnas give you better range than the stock antenna on the air unit?

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think they give better range. Seems the same to me. I run them because they are more convenient to mount, more durable and lightweight. The stocks are as light, but you have to jump through hoops to secure them so they won't break MMCXs.

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. I didn't install these expecting better range. I did it for the improved mounting and low weight. That said, I just changed antennas on the goggles. Definitely noticed and improvement with that. Video on that coming soon.

    Your plastic connectors on the cherry antennas are backwards.🤣 They are designed to mount inside the hole in the tpu mount, then slide the antenna in and that plastic connector clamps down on the antenna.

    • @mooosestang
      @mooosestang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume they are backwards, but it will still grab the antenna that way. I just pushed the taller side into the tpu mount. I have not had one of those antennas move yet.

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried that way too, but because of it being two antennas, they crash into each other. Also the main hole is too big to give it any support anyway. I'll likely make a new 3D part specifically for these when I can. However, I think they'll hold really well this way regardless.

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mooosestang Keep in mind that the parts are keyed for the nuts. So even if you put them on the inside, you would have to flip them around so the nuts are on the other side.

    • @mooosestang
      @mooosestang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PinchTune I saw that, didn't notice when i installed them. I just used a tiny wrench to hold the nuts. You win this time, but i was right about the weird mmcx connectors dji uses.🤣

    You inspired me to make a printable TPU part for the Apex HD and also using the RushFPV Cherry's.
    I've made and built a version also including a GPS mount:

    and upon request I've also created a part without GPS. I haven't a tried a built with it, but I'm assuming that it works fine:
